Every party in Holyrood declares itself in favour of the promotion of Gaidhlig. The unionist Labour party was the last to promote a Gaelic language act in the legislature. And even during the pre-devolution era there is plenty of evidence of Gaelic-speakers endorsing unionism (which rather belies the suggestion they are eternal enemies). But the fundamental point is that this is c.21 and not the 1600s and King James VI has feck all to do with unionism's position toward Gaelic today. |
