There’s around 10’000 people in Govanhill officially, but with the sub-letting and unregistered people there it’s likely to be a lot higher.

Most are fine, some are pricks of the highest order.

The properties themselves, even the better ones are at risk because of generations of dodgy repairs by dodgy landlords going back hundreds of years.

A boy I went to school with in the 90’s had the luck of having his bedroom collapse because a supporting wall in an upstairs flat had been knocked down to fit in more tenants.

These issues aren’t confined to Govanhill but the tenants there are more likely to be vulnerable for various reasons.

The comments about groups of youths/men not causing any problems are bullshit, I live close to the area, as do most of my friends/family and we’ve saw them cause problems loads of times.

Lots of harassing comments, people being attacked and muggings for example.

A quick Google search on Govanhill shows many of these issues, again not confined to Govanhill but there are a lot of them and remember because of the communities there is less likely to be reported.

It’s also noticeably dirty, not all as rat infested as the media make out but it’s much dirtier than the areas surrounding it.

The good points are proximity to the south side/shawlands and the city centre.

Lots of restaurants around and if you like more exotic foods there’s no shortage there.

Plus if the gentrification continues then you could make money on a flat if you’re buying, but could end up paying more if you’re renting.

Think the fact is though I wouldn’t want one of my daughters staying there, wouldn’t be worried every second if they did but it would make me a bit uneasy.
