People will piss and moan about the state of the city today but when you look at this era, it really was a fucking horrific dump. Progress has been made in so many ways, and aye, there's still more to be done, but at least we crawled out of the hovel that the post-industrial world left us in.

Suppose it doesn't help most photos from then are in black and white, but really, that's what it must have felt like. A city of concrete grey, damp, mud and shit. Clatty, boggin, all those words we love to use to describe dirt.
