I wouldn’t say “individuality” is the problem. Actually, I think if young people in this country were more free thinking, less judgemental and consumed with what others thought of them, there would be much better behaviour. The whole “selfish” ethos of young people comes from a collective attitude, may it be from their mates at school, how the adults around them act or the internet. But it is not really “selfish” at all because it’s still about fitting in, seeming cool and hard, which will probably, sadly, lead to not getting the opportunities which they could have in life.

Scotland in my experience is so consumed by a sort of paralysing fear of “difference”. Every kid dresses the same, gets the same haircut, talks the same. Adults are no different. So many people seem to end up in the same miserable place they grew up or in a job which they have next to zero interest in because they are scared of being different - scared of getting “too big” for their own boots. What does that create? Unhappy people with a plethora of frustrations who don’t know who they truly are.
