So there are 2 points:
- the company thought they were legally compromised for whatever reason. Is that because they were at fault, or did they think the law is inadequate?
Well, how do you know they weren't at fault? How do you know that the fence surrounding it was even adequately secure?

I've got a building site behind my house right now and that there are gaps in the fencing. I know it's because it's not level ground or has a burn running through it and thus harder to cover. But I would imagine that if something happened to a child in there , questions would be asked.

I mean, you are really stereotyping all kids and all places. Kids do enter these places and do play in unsafe ways at times. The very same way many generations did before them - so that aspect isn't anything new.

I think the stupid aspect you may be missing is that this isn't the court of public opinion. The company has admitted liability already. That's because their are laws, guidance & H&S measures that should be adhered to or followed. This clearly hasn't happened. Otherwise, I would imagine they would have fought the accusations.

I think you may be more upset at the laws, guidance, and H&S measures to be followed. I've no great knowledge of this case , but in some of these instances, could it be construction companies trying to save on security, etc, as a way of saving money (may not be in this case). Because we all know that construction companies have always been honest and transparent - see current concerns about the construction of schools, public buildings and homes due to RAAC or the Grenfells cladding.
