Defo a great idea. The only way to get rental prices down and more rental choice is to over saturate the market. This coupled with more housing developments in place over Glasgow will greatly benefit the city centre economy.
During summer months the accommodations are extensively used by tourists which is also beneficial to the economy.
My only concern is that of pedestrian road safety. Newton Street is presently a car centric eyesore. It does not have a continuous walking path and the pedestrian crossings are unsafe and awkward to cross especially at the south part.
Traffic calming will need to be introduced otherwise we will see a further rise in deaths. Drunk students and maniac M8 approaching car drivers do not make a good mix.
I still often think of the recent student death there and the aftermath where I witnessed a completely pulverised front end of a car. Fuck knows what was left of the poor girls body. The speed limit must absolutely be changed to 20mph.
I would presume that the main entrances will be away from Newton Street but there may well still be fire exits on this road and footpath access to the site via Newton Street is likely to be used by those travelling from the west end. |
