The new rules are absolutely insane. Even the rabidly protectionist USA has significantly more compassionate and understanding laws around spouse visas.

It is absolutely insane to me that the government gets to tell you that you are too poor to marry who you love. It is even crazier that they are setting the threshold for being poor so high.

Again the famously draconian USA sets the salary threshold for bringing a spouse at $24K which is like £19K which you can earn in the USA falling out of bed in the morning. What's more if you don't earn that you can get a guarantor to sign off and agree the arriving spouse will not go on benefits for two years as they can support them. There is way more flexibility.

The new UK approach is barbaric and awful. It seems like even some historically anti-immigration sources are scratching their heads a bit at this and the government has seemed really defensive about it. Perhaps there is some hope this will be rolled back.
