So the landscape is different from when I was starting out, but I would 100% still recommend going into Open Source.

You can without any formal training turn up to a project and if you are polite and enthusiastic, get mentored from some of the most experiences and distinguished people in the field and from day 1 you can learn all the skills you will need in every job (source control, workflow, triage, testing, debugging, releasing) and fairly quickly be contributing code to real projects that are potentially used by millions of people.

You can work on things you have personal interest in (games, graphic design, hiking, whatever), lots of people to learn from who like to share. I owe my career to it definitely
