I wouldn’t go as far to say it’s normal. But it is fairly common.

For me, I left a large group of friends and moved away from work, I tried to keep contact but it wasn’t reciprocated by most of them. When I came home years later, I tried to re establish the friendships but the group had splintered into the “successful” and the “left behinds”. Again I was the only one making effort to see any of them. It struggled to find well paying work in Glasgow, and a lot of them were in the same situation, they were all just spending their time taking drugs, i fell into the same pattern, I didn’t want that for myself. Moved away again for a better career, they all stopped talking to me completely except for 2 of them. Those 2 are basically my only friends and we keep in touch but I only see them once or twice a year. It’s lonely but at least they are true friends and not just a bunch of crabs in a bucket dragging each other down.
