I grew up in central cities overseas, have been in Glasgow for a few years and occasionally visit London.

Things are definitely a lot cheaper and it is very quiet here than in London.

Transport isn't as good here - buses don't always turn up (let alone on time) and it is one of the most expensive bus services in Britain iirc. Trains can get cancelled abruptly. We have a little subway system which is cheaper than the bus, but the areas covered by the subway are convenient enough that you don't really need it.

The renting market has become extremely competitive for tenants in recent years.

In terms of safety - it really depends. I think it can be dangerous if you're at the wrong place, at the wrong time wearing the wrong colour (there are 2 football teams and the crowd can get rather excited in public sometimes).
