Zebra crossings are absolutely everywhere in the rest of Europe, and it's just standard that a driver will stop if a pedestrian is using one (or on the verge of using one). I think it's partly through their rarity (and other issues relating to the UK being an inherently pro car place) that drivers don't act properly around them.

It's really hard to adjust to how it is here, and honestly I agree with OP. It doesn't feel like we have the right balance in terms of car users and everyone else making their way from a to b on the streets.

Between the typically mega long wait times at crossing lights, lack of faith that drivers will slow at zebra crossings, and excessive grey metal railings blocking obvious desire lines at junctions, walking in Glasgow (and most other UK cities) is not an enjoyable experience.
