I feel like prevention is the best step to focus on.

Change/additional lock.
Secure any reachable windows. (Be liberal in your definition of "reachable")

Keep valuables away from windows to deter any temptation.

The problem with CCTV is that they're already inside by that point, and it's not really that useful to the police for catching them. It would really only come in handy as evidence AFTER they're caught.

If possible, close curtains that can be seen through when you're out and make sure your door is opaque. Generally when someone breaks into a home they aren't planning on hanging about to check out your taste in decor, they generally want in to pick up anything pocketable (cash, jewellery, etc) then out again in under a minute. That goal is a lot easier when they can see clues as to where each room is or if there's any activity that would hint someone's home.
