You should get some level of funded childcare from the government (you might already know this if you've moved from within the UK). In Scotland I think it's 15 hours a week or 3 hours a day. If private nurseries are registered they will deduct this off your fee. Council run nurseries tend to provide just the amount of childcare that is funded, so around 3 hours a day.

Costs and activities offered will vary from nursery to nursery. You'll have to look around. Important to go visit a few, meet the staff and see the facilities for yourself. Mostly private nurseries offer 8-6 sort of hours, year round (apart from Christmas).

Tax credits - You might qualify for some help towards childcare costs, but you'll have to check that with the tax credit website. It depends on your circumstances. There's a calculator on there which will help you work out your entitlement.
