Got a lot of helpful replies to my original post:

An update. I managed to get my office upstairs wired up with cat6 cable today. It cost £100 which I thought was pretty good and cheaper than it would cost for high quality homeplugs.
Found a guy on a local Facebook group. He installs mostly home alarms and CCTV cameras which are usually wired up for ethernet. The original plan was to drill to outside and run a cable up one of the pipes on the side of the house into the attic and distribute the cable there. But...we have a random aerial socket near the phone line. This runs a cable all the way from the living room up to the attic. So ended up feeding the cat6 through that (was an effort because it was a bit thicker) but a lot easier than running it from outside. Then ran it down from the attic to the rooms I wanted upstairs.
Just need to find a better wireless router to put upstairs now.
