TitleReddit hates landlords and second home owners - but what's the alternative for short term housing needs? Looking for discussion.

Sorry for posting this here, I thought about the UK subreddit but reckoned it would be drowned out and I'm hoping for some reasoned discussion.

My parents made some investment in property in the early 90s (initially developing a derelict property then moving into flat purchases) and for the most part they have rented them out. Now I have started doing the same thing. I'm renting out my old flat after I moved into my current house.

I understand I come from a privileged and probably biased position, but I wanted to know what people really want to happen to the rental market.

You see a lot on reddit about how Landlords are shit and stealing homes from people who need places to live. But in our experience as landlords we tend to rent to people who are in need of short term solutions. Mostly students, but also people whose jobs mean they move around often or people who don’t want to put down roots yet.

So those of you who disagree with the idea of private landlords, can I ask what your solution to short term housing needs alternative is?

Happy to discuss any/all landlord and rental stuff while we’re here. But really looking to understand other people’s positions.
