TitleHas the town always been this bad?

I’ve recently just moved back to Glasgow after being away for 5/6 years. I live right next to central station and I’m really struggling with the area. I’m a female in her early 20s and don’t feel safe past a certain time of night - I’m constantly having junkies walk right up to my face asking for money and had someone threaten me last week because I said no. I went for a walk today and it was like a zombie wasteland with people rolling about the streets.

I know resources are strapped for people in this situation at the moment, I can’t imagine how difficult it must be so I’m trying to not come across as ignorant and don’t mean to offend anyone but I don’t like leaving my flat anymore. They just seem more aggressive than usual which is understandable if they are in desperate need at the moment.

I’m thinking it might be best for me to move out of the city centre but not sure where. Or if I should just stick it out a while longer.

I grew up in Glasgow so I’m no stranger to the usual neds, junkies and mania that sometimes comes with the town and always knew the tunnel at central/union street/argyle street has been a bit rough. But has it always been like this and I’ve just never realised? Has time away made me soft? Or is it extra bad at the moment due to COVID and will hopefully get better? I used to walk about at 2/3am after nights out without the slightest worry and now I’m scared to even nip to Tesco after dark. I love Glasgow but it doesn’t feel like home anymore.
