TitleMortgage with only 3 months of payslips?

A mate has lined up a house in Renfrewshire but just been told he needs 6 months of payslips to secure the mortgage. He's got a secure, well-paying job right now that he started 4 months ago. Before that he had left another well-paying job to take some time off and finish his PhD so he's got a gap of about 6 months without steady income, though he did do shift work in there. He's got good savings and is paying 60% cash deposit on the house but is now quite worried he won't be able to get a mortgage for the other 40 and will lose the house.

Anyone know of mortgages you can get with 3 (or 4) months payslips? Or lenders who are more understanding of circumstances like this?
