Can you hear me okay?

Councillor Susan Aitken
Hi. Yes.

TGC
Hi there, thanks very much for meeting with me.

Councillor Susan Aitken
You're welcome. It’s very nice to meet you.

TGC
Yeah, you too. Was there anything you wanted to kick off the meeting with there first?

Councillor Susan Aitken
No, not particularly. I mean, I think just an opportunity to catch up with you. I suppose first of all, to say thank you for all the work that you’re doing. I think that’s, you know, you’re setting a great example for other folk across the city. I think there's a misconception that we want people to clean up instead of the Council, that’s absolutely not true. I think there’s a long history of people in Glasgow doing community action, supporting their communities by doing that bit extra and The Evening Times, for example, has run their “Streets Ahead Award” for a long time and you’re a very good example of that. Thank you for that. You know, if there’s anything [01.00] you want to ask us, anything we can do to help, or to help move things forward, or just generally, if there’s stuff we can update you on, on what’s happening with services we’d be happy to do so. Can I introduce my colleagues by the way?

TGC
Yeah

Councillor Susan Aitken
Colin Edgar is Head of Communications and Kirsty McAlpine is my Senior Policy Advisor.

TGC
Great. Thanks. So, what I did was I posted on Instagram, Twitter, Reddit and Facebook, I basically put forward that I was having this meeting and I wanted to gather everyone’s thoughts on it. I’ve had well over 1000 responses and I’ve gathered it all into 12 points but because we only have 30 minutes I just wanted to cover 3 points, if these things were possible just to kind of aid with the clean up effort for 2021.

Councillor Susan Aitken
Mmhmm.

TGC
If that’s all right? My kind of vision is a double thing. [02.00] Number 1 is Phase 1 of getting everything picked up, the litter physically lifted and disposed of correctly. Phase 2 is the trickier one and that is to stop people from dropping it in the first place and that is a kind of cultural shift that I’m trying to achieve and that’s a whole rabbit hole I’d like to go down at some point when we have time for. Yeah, the double effort thing I’m looking to do there. Do you mind if I cover these 3 points.

Councillor Susan Aitken
Sure. Go ahead, yeah.

TGC
So, after collecting all the information from all these different places then, the number one thing that was coming up and this was about 80% of the responses and I think this would make a huge difference in the litter across Glasgow and basically it is domestic bin collections. This is the thing that came up the most. People are not wanting them to be every 3 weeks. They either want them to remain at every two weeks [03.00] or if it does go to every 3 weeks, move the recycling bins to every once a week and that would actually promote recycling, would either of them right of the back be possible?

Councillor Susan Aitken
Okay. So, at some point in the future we could well up the number of recycling uplifts. Right now, we wouldn’t do that because to be perfectly honest there isn’t enough recycling going on for us to justify us doing that but the whole point of moving towards the 3 weekly bin collection, and that isn’t going to change, and I can understand that people – and I also, you know, we don’t have evidence that there’s a direct connection between 3 weekly bin uplift, which is still in its early days, and street litter.

Yeah.

Councillor Susan Aitken
You know there’s been street litter in the city for a long time and it is down to people by and large dropping litter, you know. There are issues around
