TitleHow much does it cost to own a car in Glasgow annually?

Due to the pandemic, I've decided to pursue a driving license and buy a car eventually. This would also greatly broaden the range of hiking opportunities in Scotland and reduce getting the corona from trains or buses in the coming years.

Based on my own research, the actual cost of a car vehicle itself seems fairly negligible compared to the cost of insurance, parking and fuel. I'd probably be looking at buying a car under £5000, being 27 and never having a license before, some insurance owners quote over £1000 for insurance, not sure if that's normal or they're trying to rip me off. Parking at my flat would be free as there are spaces for parking designated for residents.

So let's say over a 5 year period I'm looking at:
£5000 for car
£1000 annually for insurance x 5
£1000 for fuel + parking annually + maintenance (?) x 5

That's £15000 over 5 years, leaving you with an average cost of £3000 per year. I'm pretty sure I'm currently spending way less on Scotrail journeys for hikes and day trips, I maybe average around £1000 annually.

So is that out of the norm or are people paying about this amount for the privilege of having your own wheels? Looking forward to your comments and input on this.
