TitleHow to Deal with Noisy Neighbour - Woman living alone, East End

Hi all,

I'm in need of some advice. I live in a tenement building and the neighbor above me plays loud music which can be clearly heard throughout the close and my flat. It is so loud that I can identify the artist and song that is being played - Johnny Cash seems to be a favourite - and my ceiling fan and curtain rods sometimes shake. The music is played during the day and usually lasts for at least an hour - on bad days they play it on and off for several hours. Usually, while they play their music, they are smoking weed, with the smell permeating into the close and my cupboard.

I moved into the flat late January and this has been going on since then. I'm currently a postgrad student and needed to be in the laboratory in order to carry out my research, so the music during the day didn't bother me much until I came home, and at that point I would just put up with it until I went to bed. However, I've finished conducting my laboratory research and am now working on my thesis, which means I'm home throughout the day. The volume of their music is so loud and distracting that I get headaches everyday and have an extremely hard time trying to focus on writing my thesis. I wear noise cancelling earphones usually, but even then I can still feel, and sometimes hear, the bass. It's gotten to the point where I'm finding it hard to even relax and unwind in my own home.

I've googled how to deal with this and a lot of suggestions say to talk to the neighbor directly or write a letter with your flat number and state how the music is affecting you. I'm a woman and live alone, and don't feel comfortable, or safe, trying to talk to my neighbor or confront them because I don't know how they will react, or if my safety will be threatened. I have been thinking about writing a letter to the occupier asking them to turn their music down due to the impact it is having on my health. I'd post the letter through the mail and wouldn't be putting information in the letter which could easily identify me. Additionally, I have thought about contacting the flat's landlord directly and trying to go through that route.

I'm not sure which route would be the best for me and my situation, especially since the music is played during the day and I don't feel safe confronting my neighbor directly. Has anyone been in a similar situation and can give me some advice on the best way to deal with this? What has worked for you and your noisy neighbours?

I do apologise if there is a fairly simple solution to this, but I worry about my safety and want to go about this in the safest and most effective way possible.
