TitleHow big of a risk is a permission-less conservatory?

Body
We're very close to buying a house in the southside-ish, and it transpires that the conservatory (which is about 10-12 years old) doesn't have the 'local authority paperwork'. I'm wondering if anyone here has encountered something like this before, and what usually becomes of it. A lawyer friend down in London says things like this are very common unfortunately, and we might be at the point where the council can't make us take it down, but I know different countries/different laws. Of course we've got a solicitor working on the legal end of things, but they can only advise us so far.
