TitleAre ‘Good’ Schools a myth?

Afternoon Folks,

A couple of years ago my daughter got offered a place at what is considered one of the best state schools in the country.

This is due to the fact she’s extremely talented in something the school specialises in. (It’s not genetic incidentally unless she was swapped at birth which may be a possibility).

It wasn’t feasible to commute there from our house and to be honest we were looking for a move anyway so we decided to move closer to the school.

She’s really happy there because the specialisation gets more attention but the issue is that the rest of the teaching/experience isn’t that good and a lot of the kids seem to be wee shits.

Some of the subject teachers are extremely poor and seem to rely on the fact that their pupils are able to get help elsewhere.

The classes are vastly overcrowded and kids struggle to get any support needed.

The Extra Curricular activities are mostly full and cost more than you would expect.

She’s witnessed a lot of snobbery/bullying aimed at less affluent kids.

All in all although I would have done it again for her to have the chance to progress I was far more impressed with the last school she was at that was about 120 places below this one in the exam league table.

I just wondered what other people’s experience has been at the so called ‘better’ schools around Glasgow/The West (no need for me to name them as I’m sure you’d know if you went to one)?

Experiences both as pupil and/or a parent would be great?

Thanks
