TitleAnybody familiar with how the letting agencies operate? Canadians looking for advice...

Helllooo -

So as everybody is aware the flat letting market in Glasgow is insane at the moment. For context, we're two Canadians who just arrived here in the past two weeks. My partner is beginning her masters at U Glasgow and I'm working remotely for a Canadian company.

Where it gets quite nutty is that I figured we are more fortunate than most in terms of our economic circumstance - we're looking at the flats that are geared towards young professionals instead of students, can offer multiple months rent up front, no kids/pets, etc. Still, we've had absolutely no luck in getting most letting agencies to even respond to us, despite emailing and calling as soon as we see the posting. As of now, we're staring down the barrel of consecutive airbnb/hotel bookings that will get REALLY expensive REALLY fast.

So, I was wondering if anybody could provide me some insight into how the letting agencies operate (they aren't a thing in Canada). Is it that they just take the first couple applications that they receive in ~0.2 seconds, fire them off to the landlord, and then the landlord lets them know who they want? Is there any world where you can contact the landlord directly? Can you go into the letting agency office and get on any sort of list that they'll inquire with before it gets posted (how the hell are these listings disappearing so fast?)

I tried proactively reaching out to a few months ago and asking them to make us aware if anything came available in the area around UGlasgow, but obviously that has been radio silence.

Any insight is much appreciated, thank you!
