TitleOrganising YIMBY support for Shawlands Arcade redevelopment planning application

Living Rent held a well-attended public meeting tonight with three local councillors (Ghani, MacLeod and Molyneux) and maybe 60+ people - all of whom except me and one other guy were opposed to the development. There was a thread on it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/un7c1e/shawlands_arcade_redevelopment/) a few months ago.

When I finally got the chance to say something, attempting to make the point that assertions about its effects on rents in the surrounding area [were misguided](https://www.lewis.ucla.edu/research/market-rate-development-impacts/), I got laughed at and heckled and lost my train of thought. Ended up getting a bit heated and they threatened to kick me out for going over time even though people were shouting over me and previous speakers had been allowed to say their piece for several minutes uninterrupted (if you were there yeah I'm "that guy" haha).

The councillors, particularly Baille MacLeod, very strongly encouraged everyone to submit objections and even requested that they invite friends and relatives in other parts of the UK to do so. There's no doubt that they'll clear the 60 required to get it sent to the council's planning committee, and the overwhelmingly negative character of the objections will likely torpedo the development. If this gets shot down it'll take years to get another application off the ground and I'd bet anything that the same people would find reasons to oppose whatever proposal comes next.

The deadline for comments on the planning application is the [10th of October](https://publicaccess.glasgow.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=dates&keyVal=RHKP3ZEXKPK00) and if there are other YIMBYs out there who would like to see this happen it might make sense to coordinate. Not entirely sure what I'm suggesting here so consider this thread a place to express interest. If there are enough folk keen on doing so we could potentially set up a Glasgow YIMBY Discord/WhatsApp or something and work together to support new housing in the area and show planners that NIMBYs don't necessarily speak for the community. Let me know :)
