TitleRe-training or going back to studying at 40 years old

Has anyone done this ? I'll be forty this year and have found myself newly single after 15 years. Split up with the missus and gave up our nice house to live in a wee ex-council flat in a scheme. I was much happier for the first few months but I hit a heavy mid-life wobble this week and started panicking about my life.

I'm a good bit more skint since moving out. I'm running a house on one salary instead of two and giving my ex a hefty chunk of my wages for child support.

I'm not on a bad salary by any means, 31k with the NHS but I'm at the top of my pay scale and there isnt any movement coming soon that would allow me to move up to the next pay grade. I would ideally like to earn 40 - 50k and wouldn't be averse to re-training or going back to education but I'd need to do it fast as I'm not getting any younger. Has anyone been in a similar position and have any advice or recommendations. I'd be glad to hear from anyone. Cheers.
