Transport Scotland + Scottish Government announced a new £10 million fund a few days ago, to support new projects to install safe cycling infrastructure across Scotland.

It's up to local authorities to apply to Transport Scotland and Sustrans (the cycling infrastructure charity), who'll decide which projects merit some of this financial support. Projects might be installing a new bike parking station, or reallocating roadslace to painted cycle lanes.

So, I think now is as good a time as any to fire an email over to your ward councillors if you have a project in mind for your local area. Find your ward councillors contact details here:

For me, the thing that would instantly improve things is reallocating road space from the wide arterial road in my area (removing one side's parking bays) and in installing 2-way painted cycle lanes.

Cities around the world are already doing this, in response to the higher numbers of cyclists on the streets, and to offer a safe transport option to those that have a bike, but might normally be too afraid to use it for intracity travel.

So start pestering your councillors folks. Who knows, maybe some of the 'temporary' infrastructure will become permanent once this is all over!
