TitleWho opened the gates for the barbarians?

I am a key worker working in the city centre. I commute to work via Central Station.

Shortly after lockdown started it was brought to my attention that the so-called homeless population were being put up in a hotel on or near Argyle Street. I immediately knew what this would mean for us, since I know our average homeless person is a junkie.

When I finish work and want to pick up something for dinner, I have to make my way through hoards of junkies and neds who are openly drinking, selling drugs, heckling passers by, begging for money, and fighting. On my way into work today I witnessed a fight between what appeared to be 3 junkies outside the hotel. On my way home a melee was breaking out with around 20 combatants.

It’s absolute chaos here on a daily basis and it’s getting worse all the time.

Growing up in Paisley I already had little sympathy for people who abuse drugs and alcohol. I watched it happen in my own home when I was growing up and was often alone and afraid of what was going to happen when people came home steaming drunk or on heroin.

First and foremost I’m angry with these people who fuck their lives up by drinking and taking drugs, then make other people’s lives miserable with their outrageous actions. I’m also angry with the people who don’t know, or refuse to believe, the reality of drug and alcohol culture in this country, and think that substance abuse is followed by homelessness when it’s actually the opposite that’s true.
