  • I’m American, I’m moving to Glasgow in the fall for school how much should I expect to be ripped on for sounding like an American Pie character by DaddyO69420 (Tue 11th May 2021 3:14pm)
  • Ok so you guys actually call it the Hairst colloquially or is it just autumn? I never knew that by DaddyO69420 (Tue 11th May 2021 4:14pm)
  • I understand your confusion but the problem with the way you laid it out is that it makes the power struggle look much more symmetrical. Israel is the largest military power in the Middle East, they receive billions in military aid from the US every year, with a massive army and navy and a large collection of nukes at their disposal. They are a huge power, while Palestinians are now a scattered, disenfranchised people lacking many basic human necessities and rights. Hammas has committed plenty of horrible crimes that should be rightly condemned, but their power still pails in comparison to the Israeli government, and the Israeli government indiscriminately bombs Palestinian civilians in their efforts to destroy Hammas. You will notice many of the largest western media outlets trying to portray this as a “conflict” or power struggle between equals, when really it’s grown increasingly one sided. by DaddyO69420 (Mon 17th May 2021 6:39pm)
  • I like your question because it definitely is an interesting thought exercise with this issue. Your question about what it would be like if the power was reversed and the Palestinians were in control and the Jews were subjugated has actually already been answered. We have seen the reaction that Arab countries get in the middle east when they start committing atrocities like the ones Israel is committing. They are immediately invaded, intervened with, and bombed to hell by America and NATO. There would be no chance for an Arab country to get as powerful as Israel. Imagine if Iran was as powerful as Israel is right now? There probably already would have been a huge war. The fact that NATO hasn't tried to put a stop to what Israel is doing in any way implies that they endorse the violence that is happening there. At a very basic level what is disgusting to me about Israel is that it is an Apartheid state where one race of people are subjugated treated like second class citizens by law. I think it is everyone's duty to morally oppose that kind of government and state. To give you my own personal perspective, I am an American Ashkenazi Jew who's grandparents fled Russia because of persecution (moving to Glasgow soon thats why I'm on the sub). I think that the state of Israel is fundamentally going against core Jewish values with their actions. They are becoming increasingly controlled by far right wing groups that resemble the alt-right in America. Ideologically they are becoming a fascist state that resembles the states that persecuted the Jews in the first place. They elected their leaders democratically and there's nothing other countries can do about that, but other Western countries can stop propping up their war crimes by supporting them with billions in military aid every year. They have killed 200 civilians in Gaza this week and Biden just sent them $700 million. I'm by now means an expert on this subject but I monitor world news pretty closely and these are my thoughts. by DaddyO69420 (Tue 18th May 2021 5:34pm)
  • Just moved here from NYC. People have been in uproar because the MTA (subway+bus) there now costs $2.75 per swipe. I was honestly shocked to see how expensive it was here. by DaddyO69420 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 9:08pm)

  • Wanting to boost this- I only moved to Glasgow last year, I’m not living in Govanhill but one of the adjacent areas. Victoria road is a great place, has a few of my favorite pubs in the city plus loads of great food and shops- plus it’s only about 3 blocks from all the other great restaurants and pubs on Pollokshaws. It already has hints of gentrification as there’s some fancy bakeries and coffee shops and such popping up all over. It’s right next to Queens park. I moved here from NYC and have lived in a couple other large cities. If you are used to living in a city at all I don’t think Govanhill will phase you. There’s a couple streets to be careful about, sure, but overall nothing crazy. The way people are talking in this thread makes it sound like some war torn hellhole where you’re liable to be murdered at any moment which to me seems ridiculous. You have to wonder if racism plays a role by DaddyO69420 (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 9:03am)
  • I don’t necessarily think it’s a great blanket way to judge areas though. I live in Shawlands which many people rightfully make fun of for being hipster and gentrified and there’s loads of gambling spots and weird takeaways by DaddyO69420 (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 9:09am)
  • I swear to god people will go to extreme lengths to avoid just having an honest conversation with someone. I lived in NYC before moving here and there it’s no issue at all to bang your broom on your ceiling, go talk to your neighbor, or even just yell up at them to be quiet. Getting the police involved is absolutely insane. I don’t know what society is coming to. by DaddyO69420 (Thu 14th Apr 2022 11:16am)
