  • How much were the Arab delegates drinking? Curious to know if they follow Sharia themselves or if they just use Islam as an excuse for their own personal gain. As a western Muslim, I suspect it's the latter... by MeshSailSunk (Tue 9th Nov 2021 12:36pm)
  • Sounds about right. Always thought the heavy-handed approach to Islam in these countries was an extreme perversion of the laws, implemented by power-grabbing hypocrites. Not surprised to see that confirmed. I'm also not surprised people in positions of power look down on and poorly treat those who are supposedly beneath them, regardless of nationality, religion or anything else. The rich and powerful live in an entirely different world from us peasants. Thanks for the insight mate by MeshSailSunk (Tue 9th Nov 2021 1:27pm)
  • I'm going to see Lorna Shore in January (if it happens!) and Erra/Brand of Sacrifice in February so if you're looking for a gig buddy for either of those gimme a shout! by MeshSailSunk (Fri 31st Dec 2021 11:28am)
  • Many of the Masjids have Iftar programmes and host Taraweeh prayers. Central Mosque is the largest and has folk with diverse ethnic backgrounds so I'd recommend there as a starting point. by MeshSailSunk (Fri 8th Apr 2022 12:07pm)

  • What's the connection between pride in yourself and some privileged old woman? I'd rather be proud of myself for my own achievements in life but if you get your sense of pride from celebrating a woman who has had everything in her life handed to her on a multimillion pound silver platter then go ahead. by MeshSailSunk (Thu 2nd Jun 2022 7:08pm)
  • Blame for what? The monarchy doesn't impact my life personally - it's just very outdated and doesn't serve any practical purpose in modern society. At least religion serves a purpose to those who believe in it. Also not fussed about people enjoying things that I don't. As I said, if you're happy celebrating the monarchy then go ahead. I just don't see the need for the entire nation to celebrate an institution built on stolen wealth that doesn't benefit ordinary people at a time when most people in this country are struggling with financial problems (amongst other things). by MeshSailSunk (Thu 2nd Jun 2022 8:15pm)

  • From my own perspective as an ethnic minority and Muslim who's born in the city I'm pretty shocked at the extent of the racism mentioned here. I've, apparently very luckily, managed to avoid facing any sort of racist discrimination over the past 5 or 6 years. The only reason I can think of for perhaps "getting away with it" is that I sound like any other "local" Glaswegian. That said, I did have a small argument with a guy on a train a few weeks ago as he casually used the word "Paki" in conversation so I felt I had to call him out on it. I'm well aware that terms like this or "Chinky" are still pretty widespread but it mostly seems to come from the older generations. I wouldn't say we're any more racist than anywhere else (if anything we're probably much better off than some areas down south) but we clearly have work to do. If we really want to address issues like this and other forms of discrimination then there has to be a collective effort from people of all backgrounds to call it out and educate others. by MeshSailSunk (Tue 29th Nov 2022 8:17pm)
  • I'm not, no. by MeshSailSunk (Wed 30th Nov 2022 8:25am)
  • Haha I wouldn't say I blend in but yeah you're absolutely spot on. Like I said I'm not sure how I've managed to get lucky by escaping any sort of racist discrimination but I can see that it's clearly worse for others than myself. We have to be proactive in educating people and stamping it out. by MeshSailSunk (Wed 30th Nov 2022 10:06pm)
  • It's not so much the Islamic aspect but more the local culture from their/their family's homeland. In Islam dogs are considered unclean and we're told that we should not keep them as pets - only as working animals for shepherds etc but that doesn't translate to a fundamental hatred or fear of dogs. Muslims are *supposed* to be kind to *all* animals as they are part of creation. However the bigger issue is that in a lot of the non-western world stray dogs have rabies and are essentially feral (and dangerous). Dog attacks by both individual dogs and packs are surprisingly common, which does cause fear and resentment (a number of my family members are afraid of dogs having experienced issues with stray dogs when they were children). Although I can't say I've seen any complaints from the Muslim community about dogs in silverburn. For what it's worth, I don't really see how letting dogs into crowded indoor venues is a good idea anyway, for either the dog or other people. Looks like common sense has prevailed. by MeshSailSunk (Thu 9th Feb 2023 11:43am)

  • Israel is a terrorist organisation. We should deport anyone who supports them by MeshSailSunk (Sat 14th Oct 2023 6:21pm)
  • I didn't see any support for Hamas there and I was there from the start. People don't care about Hamas. People care about innocent Palestinians being murdered en masse by a group of psychos who seem to have forgotten everything that happened to their own people in the 1930s/40s by MeshSailSunk (Sat 14th Oct 2023 6:26pm)
  • I'm just turning your own words back on you mate. What Israel does to Palestinians is equally unforgivable... except its on a much larger scale. I'm tired of this narrative that if you condemn Israel you automatically support Hamas. It serves no purpose other than to silence any dissent against Israel's fascist regime. I'm Muslim. I have no problem criticising Saudi Arabia for their atrocities, or Iran, or any other so-called "Islamic" country when they act in a way that I don't think lives up to the morals of my religious teachings. It's about time others stop making excuses for Israel too. by MeshSailSunk (Sat 14th Oct 2023 6:34pm)
  • >however every single member of Hamas has one single goal to kill every Israeli - I don't think you can tell me any group like Hamas in Israel that wants to kill every Palestinian. Then I'm afraid you don't understand the aims of Netanyahu's govt because that is literally what they want. Why do you think they repeatedly break international law by building illegal settlements in what little territory Palestinians retain, and repeatedly respond to Hamas' attacks by indiscriminately bombing Palestine with no concerns about "collateral damage"? For every individual Israeli that is killed by Hamas, multiple Palestinians are killed by Israel, not just in this current flare up, but in every single one. This is not a "conflict", it's a state sanctioned massacre of the Palestinians. by MeshSailSunk (Sat 14th Oct 2023 6:53pm)
  • >I believe if Hamas never attacked Israel again then Israel would not attack Palestine again. I agree. They'd just continue to build illegal settlements on Palestinian territory and strip the Palestinians living there of basic human rights instead, which is what they've been doing in the West Bank. by MeshSailSunk (Sat 14th Oct 2023 7:02pm)
  • No it's not. The end result is the same - the systematic destruction of the Palestinian people and erasure from their homeland by MeshSailSunk (Sat 14th Oct 2023 7:21pm)
  • I think so. And I'll say, sincerely, well done for keeping this civil. It's rare to discuss issues like this with opposing viewpoints without ending up in a shit-slinging contest online. by MeshSailSunk (Sat 14th Oct 2023 7:29pm)
