  • The Scottish Greens said in their manifesto that they wanted to: > Develop the role of housing associations so they can act as anchor institutions for their local communities, supporting initiatives like community finance, community gardening, crèches, laundries, toy libraries and tool sharing. • This is something I'd be interested in, but not sure if Reddit's the best forum for it. It seems to me that most people who are writing books intend to publish them under their own name. However, I suspect of us like to use Reddit as an *anonymous* forum and so don't want it associated with our own names. by MrStilton (Sun 23rd May 2021 9:40pm)

  • > stopped pandering to the overly PC crowd What does that mean in practice? Surely you don't mean we should just assume all asian men are rapists? by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 6:09pm)
  • Yes, I understood that bit. I don't understand what they mean when they say we should "stop pandering". by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 7:42pm)
  • Are they? I've never seen that. by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 7:49pm)
  • OK, and what does "calling it out" *mean* though? What are the consequences of it? Let's say that the majority of rapes in the city centre are committed by Asian men (I've no idea if this is true or not, but for the sake of argument, let's say that it is). Now what? by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 7:53pm)

  • > our culture This sort of language only reinforces an "us and them" narrative. I have no problem acknowledging that many cultures seem to encourage misogyny, but let's not labour under illusion that this kind of behaviour only exists in our society because we've imported it from foreign lands. There are plenty of native Scots who are just as scummy. I agree with some of your points, e.g. increased police presence, values education for new entrants to the UK, etc. but some of them don't sit right with me. > Public awareness campaigns to highlight to potential victims and their families the Increased risk from these men. That just sounds like encouraging racism. by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 8:19pm)
  • In Rotheram the issue was gangs grooming children. Do you have evidence that something similar his happening in Glasgow? by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 8:33pm)
  • > the majority of rapes now in Glasgow are Asian men targeting young white women. Is that true? What evidence is there to support the claim? by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 8:37pm)
  • I'm not playing dumb. I'm asking what you want to *do*. You say we can "profile these men and stop them". How? Just arrest guys walking about on their own for the crime of being asian? I find it strange that the same people who complain that they can't speak freely because of "political correctness" and the like feel the need to dance around what they actually want to *do* when given an open invitation to spell out exactly what they want to happen. by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 8:36pm)
  • > you don't want to offend the rapist because racism No I don't want to label or portray people who aren't rapists as being rapists. by MrStilton (Wed 11th Aug 2021 8:43pm)

  • Completely agree. I've met people who work fairly low paid jobs but whose parent's have bought them a flat to live in. Those people are clearly much better off than someone earning double their salary but who is still having to save for a house deposit. by MrStilton (Mon 23rd May 2022 8:45pm)

  • What kind of shirts to you wear? Someone else in the thread suggested a Hawaiian shirt, which is a bit too ostentatious for my taste. • What tax breaks has the Scottish Government given to "giant corporations"? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 7:32pm)
  • Yes. The government is trying to cut people's wages (in real terms) due to factors outside of their control. Refuse collectors, cleaners, janitors, school admin support staff, etc. aren't responsible for the lack of investment in our energy generation infrastructure, so I don't think it's fair that they should be the ones to suffer as a result of the adverse consequences of this. by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 7:31pm)
  • Are you opposed to all strike action or just the that which is currently planned? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 7:44pm)

  • So you think the SNP should definitely be doing *something* differently, but you've no idea what? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 8:04pm)
  • Why would it lead to more inflation? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 8:49pm)
  • > Higher wages mean that the costs are passed on to consumers In private sector roles, couldn't the cost just come out of profits (i.e. with businesses reducing their profit margins)? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 9:13pm)
  • Why should employees accept a real terms wage reduction just to protect their employer's profit margin though? Shouldn't businesses also be expected to make a sacrifice? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 9:36pm)
  • Surely any investments which businesses make in new tech, product development, etc. would be classed as expenses and *reduce* their profits - wouldn't they? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 9:41pm)
  • Surely striking is the exact *opposite* of begging. I've mostly worked in private sector, non-unionised businesses. In a couple of these, everyone was expected to complete a year end performance review, trundle into meetings with their manager and make the case for a raise. They would then be told that unfortunately budgets were fairly tight and so everyone would be getting 1%. But, if they worked *really* hard, took on more responsibility, etc. then they may be eligible for more at some undefined point in the future. Of course, in many of these businesses profits had risen by >10% and, of course, the Directors were all getting raises which were well above inflation. THAT is what begging looks like. By contrast, these strikers are actually *negotiating* with their employers. The only way you can negotiate is if you have leverage. As a single person, you likely have very little. Almost every business can afford to lose a single person from a team without issue. To lose two would be more of an issue, but would still be manageable. To lose three would be a real headache. To lose four would create very big problems. To lose five might lead to utter chaos. Etc. Point is, if a large number of employees bargain together, collectively, they have the ability to *force* they're employer to actually negotiate with them. If you oppose strikes, what do you propose that people should do to get a wage rise? Or, should they just accept whatever they're given and be grateful? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 10:02pm)
  • Because you're complain that unions aren't doing "more" when you openly admit you don't know what else they should be doing. You don't even know what you're complaining about. by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 10:08pm)
  • > The poorest of society should be compensated through cost-of-living benefits Why should I be expected to subsidise profitable companies which are choosing not to pay their staff a decent wage though my taxes? by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 10:07pm)
  • Yes, they should. by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 10:05pm)
  • Do you think it's reasonable to expect people to have to change their job every year, just to avoid their spending power falling? Obviously, most people aren't going to do that, so inevitably average wages will fall in real terms (as has been happening). by MrStilton (Tue 23rd Aug 2022 10:05pm)

  • It's not inherently racist to oppose taking in refugees. Given the shocking levels of poverty and abject squalor which many Glasgow residents live in, I think it's prefectly reasonable to want taxpayer money to be targeted at improving their lives before importing people from elsewhere. by MrStilton (Fri 19th May 2023 7:17pm)
  • Whenever money is spent on *anything* an opportunity cost is incurred. For example, the reason [~100 people at Glasgow City Council are at risk of redundancy is because the Scottish Gov chose to reallocate ~£26M away from the higher education sector](https://news.stv.tv/west-central/city-of-glasgow-college-to-cut-up-to-100-jobs-as-it-tackles-6m-deficit-after-scottish-government-budget-cut). That's the cost of that decision. When money is spent on one person, it's no longer available to be spend on someone else. The annual, UK-wide cost of housing asylum seekers is [~£3.8 Billion](https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-9663/CBP-9663.pdf). The cost of heating some stables isn't in the same ballpark (although obviously that's a waste of money too). Criticising asylum policy isn't the same as "attacking poor people". When you frame the issue in that way it plays into the hands of your far right types. by MrStilton (Fri 19th May 2023 11:13pm)
  • This rhetoric (and the "us and them" mentality it fosters) just shuts down debate, polarises the issue, and drives people towards far right groups like the one mentioned in the poster. Do you think the Scottish Governement should be housing more refugees? Where in the budget would you reallocated the funding to do so from? by MrStilton (Fri 19th May 2023 11:22pm)
  • DELETED > We I didn't vote for it. by MrStilton (Fri 19th May 2023 11:25pm)
  • If someone's leaning towards thinking that the UK is taking in too many asylum seekers then calling them a "traitor" and implying they have no pride/generally lack awareness isn't going change their mind. It will however make them feel personally attacked and so they'll likely double down on their position and become more hostile towards those with the opposing view. by MrStilton (Fri 19th May 2023 11:38pm)
  • > ideally the government should give all refugees and asylum seekers the right to work and open their own businesses immediately. That way immigration would contribute to economic growth It would also lead to massively increased wage competition which would surpress wages while also creating an additional pull factor which would encourage more people to seek asylum in the UK. by MrStilton (Sat 20th May 2023 12:48am)
  • > Playing into their hands is somehow arguing bravermans plan is to help vulnerable 'british' people ...omg. I never said that. I'm not really sure how to respond to your comment as your tone suggests you're disagreeing with me, yet you make many of the same points I would. E.g. heating people is obviously not a waste of money. Ideally I'd like more money to be spent tackling fuel poverty before we import massive numbers of additional people into the country. by MrStilton (Sat 20th May 2023 12:53am)
  • I'm not fully convinced that most of these refugees are more vulnerable than the most vulnerable people who already live in our society. by MrStilton (Sat 20th May 2023 12:55am)
  • Not cherry picking, just focusing on the bit I disagree with. I.e. that contrary to what you're saying, I suspect the wealthiest in our society stand to benefit the most from importing large numbers of people. Doing this gives our labour force less bargaining power, due to increase competion, which reduces salary expences, and increases profits. Good night. by MrStilton (Sat 20th May 2023 1:00am)
  • So far as I know, every UK party leader supports having *some* restrictions on the number of people who can claim asylum in the UK. Are they all "big racist cunts" too, given that they oppose taking in some refugees? by MrStilton (Sat 20th May 2023 1:29pm)
