Thanks for all the responses. I was thinking a plant or something to the side of my door but nobody else has anything so didn’t know if it was really weird to do so! It tends to be an area to dump rubbish/recycling when the communal bins are full in my close so wanted to brighten it up a little bit!

A great film. I think it was Martin Compston’s first film? At least his first ‘big role’

I think this is becoming increasingly common. We’re too busy or too sceptical to forge real connections with people we meet in passing and it’s so hard to make friends as we get older. I’m in a similar situation (30f) and I spoke about this recently with my partner. I have a few close friends and that’s kinda it. However, I have zero interest in sports, I’m not crafty and no gaming interests so most clubs I see, I don’t want to join. The good thing is, you have some interests that are fairly common. Have you had a look on Facebook for local groups? Particularly during this lockdown, it’s going to be hard to meet people but chatting online could be a good place to start?

I would love to give blood but it results in me having horrendous migraines. Although it’s been a few years, I might give it another go. It’s not like I need to be anywhere so 4 days in bed won’t be noticed!

I doubt it. You could email your local councillor and voice your concerns that way. I had reported fly tipping several times on the GCC app (pre-Covid) with no response. Saw the councillor was active in a local Facebook group and had a response within a few days. Appreciate it will likely be slower than that at the moment, but probably still quicker than the app.

I work in recruitment and this is definitely a concern. I’m trying to put as much money away in savings just now as I can but not focusing on it too much. I can’t predict the future so don’t want to spend the next few months panicking about something that may or may not happen.

No idea! My workplace specialises in office based support roles so we’re not cross-specialism. The economic fallout from this situation is tough and I’m not sure how many companies won’t be able to survive it, or at least survive with the same staffing levels.

I’ve travelled to London a few times by train and find the time difference to that and flying is pretty negligible once you add in travelling to the airport and getting through security. I much prefer the train - seats are more comfortable, you can move about easier, the toilets are much better and you’re actually in the city on arrival.

I’d love if we renamed the streets after people who positively impacted Glasgow - the names posted feels like a hollow gesture. Does anyone have any suggestions as to who? I really need to learn more about this beautiful city I live in and like the idea of (mostly) unknown people being honoured, in the same vein as the Louisa Jordan hospital.

It’s absolutely disgusting and embarrassing. It also seems to come from people who should really know better. You can understand a young kid not thinking and dropping litter, but an adult should know you just don’t do it. My mum brought me up by telling me that if there’s no bin available, you put your rubbish in your pocket until you find one. I’ve littered once in my life (I still have no idea why I even dropped my crisp packet, but I did. Maybe it was teenage rebellion.) and I felt so guilty, I never done it again. Kids get a lot of education around environment and recycling but parents/adults are the ones who need a swift kick to the baws to teach them the potential impact of littering.

I definitely agree with the not wanting to pretend we don’t have a horrific history and we need to own the atrocities that we contributed to. However, it just feels wrong to honour these people. If we do rename the streets, in 200 years time, nobody will remember who they are named for, but it provides an education to the current and hopefully next generation as well.

Have you looked at Pollokshields/Kinning Park? Not too far from town either - can get the subway but can also walk/cycle. I pay £650 for a two bed in Pollokshields and it’s generally a nice area. Some issues with loud cars/fireworks every now and again but nowhere is perfect!

If you’re on Facebook, there’s a ‘Friends of Maxwell Park’ group who take care of the park really well. There was a discussion of planting new flowers so they might be able to help? Could also be worthwhile getting in touch with the Hidden Gardens? I know they are closed to the public just now but staff are still there to keep things looked after, they may be able to spare some flowers.

I’ve suffered with migraines for over a decade and had to push my GP to refer me to a neurologist. I’d had scans etc before to rule out anything more serious and was massively palmed off for a long time. Neurologist referral did take a while but I got there and we discussed what treatments had been used/their success and was told my available options. They will go through more medication than your GP can prescribe before moving to Botox so don’t expect a quick turnaround on the NHS. I had several follow ups and my migraines are at a manageable level now. My GP has a list of medications (triptans) that I can chose from and the neurologist has given me control over which medication I take as these can become not very effective after a while so I can cycle them if necessary. I’m no longer under neurologist care, but if I slip back into severe territory, apparently my referral will be quicker. Sorry that’s probably not very helpful but you’re not alone!

I live in Pollokshields and it’s a lovely area. Many large houses of similar pricing to the one your friend is looking at. Very close to Pollok Park, Bellahouston Park as well as Maxwell Park - lots of green and open spaces. It’s a diverse area with lots of different stores - jewellers, Asian bakery, halal butchers etc. There’s also a church, Sikh Gurdwara and an Islamic school. Lots of community events as well - gardens and litter picking for example.

I don’t have anything against private landlords per se. I do think there are people out there who are looking to make as much money with as little effort as possible and that doesn’t make a good landlord unfortunately. As long as you’re providing a good standard of property and are happy to maintain it, then I don’t see an issue. As a tenant, I would be interested to know how much profit comes from my rent. I have no idea what sort of factors fees and insurances are covered by the landlord as well as their mortgage. It wouldn’t change anything, I’d just find it interesting. My landlord is cheap. They want everything done as cheaply as possible. I’ve been in my flat almost 4 years and in that time the fridge and washing machine have both broke. Both were very old and the landlord tried everything to take as long as possible to replace them. We went over 2 months with no washing machine. I wasn’t willing to wait for a fridge and actually ordered it myself and the landlord made (part) payment to me. This makes me think that they don’t make a huge profit from my rent and have most likely bought property as a retirement investment.

I don’t know about the specifics from the article but there are always flats available there and that to me screams of issues. The area is in (what I consider) a bit of a weird location, it’s almost no-man’s land in terms of housing. Just a block of flats thrown up on a spare bit of land in a fairly industrial location.

Grew up in the area and depending on where you are looking, it’s a bit grim. Orchard Park area is absolutely fine and will be your best bet but do expect some ‘characters’ on the Main Street. I’ve never felt unsafe in the area but that may come from growing up there! Train station is pretty regular and frequent. Bus service is generally good but many of the other passengers are not. Good wee selection of shops - McDonalds, spar, boots, Greggs, butchers etc.

I’m a Glasgow native and travel on the subway. I was wearing a green dress one day and had Rod Stewart playing through my headphones. Rangers happened to be playing at Ibrox so the subway was full of fans (many of them drunk and not acting their politest). Nobody said a word to me. Apart from the one guy who asked to see my tits but he said it to every woman so I didn’t feel particularly special. Bigoted violence is a thing but unless you’re actively involved in it/provoking it then you’re probably fine.

Definitely report to SSPCA. They clearly think that a 2x2 pen is adequate and it’s really not appropriate for a husky. This isn’t behaviour that the owner doesn’t know about. This is behaviour caused by the owner. I’m assuming that it’s not just you and your neighbour that live on your street so it may not be obvious who made the complaint. Huskies can be loud so it’s unlikely you’re the only person who has noticed either.

I’m not all that fussy to be honest. Smirnoff ice, WKD, premixed cocktails - that kind of thing. Supermarkets seem to be rather expensive. I’m sure I used to buy crates of 24 for around £10. It seems that 10 for £10ish is the going rate these days.

Reading through these recollections and realising how sheltered I was as a child. I was born late 80s and grew up in Arden...hardly an up and coming area but I was completely blind to the goings on around me. There was the usual sectarian pish with the catholic and Protestant schools next to each other but anything I witnessed was nothing more than wee boys messing around. As an adult, I think back and realise the place was crawling in poverty. That my nice, safe home with a warm meal every day wasn’t necessarily the same for everyone else. The ice cream van almost sold me drugs when I was like 6 and I remember crying cause I didn’t have enough money. I’d asked for 10 jellies and only had 10p. But I never felt unsafe or in danger at any point. I never witnessed first hand the violence that I now know took place. You hear stories of people doing things and I can’t quite match up the wee guys I knew and the behaviours. I don’t know if it’s cause I’m female that there wasn’t the same expectation that I’d go down the wrong path or maybe my parents worked really hard to hide it from me. I’m not sure but a scheme childhood was brilliant and I’d much rather what I had than kids today.

There are jobs available but there’s thousands of jobseekers so the competition is ridiculous. I’m an administrator (highly experienced and pretty damn good at what I do) and I can’t even get an interview. There will be hundreds of people just as qualified and even more who are less qualified but capable and probably cheaper. Salaries advertised are also lower than usual market rate and expecting a lot. It’s grim. Redundancy is a bitch. It’s hard to stay positive when all you ever hear back is ‘thanks but no thanks’ and the longer I’m out of work, the harder and scarier it gets. I can only hope that as more industries open fully and return to normal levels of business that things pick up.

Depending on where I am, Uber can be quicker to pick me up. I also like the option to share your journey as I’m usually a female travelling on my own. I like to think it alerts the driver that I’ve done it as well and makes me feel a little safer. Hampden app is decent. You can prepay by card as well as cash which is decent as I never really carry cash. I had a bad experience with a driver from Hampden a number of years ago and had to complain to them about his behaviour. They dealt with it promptly and never had an issue since.

I would honestly hate to be in charge of making decisions in these circumstances. No matter what Sturgeon does, she cannae win. Keep the businesses open and allow people to die? Heartless bitch. Close businesses and have a negative impact on the economy and potentially job losses? Fucks the country for years to come. This pandemic has been hell. Lives and livelihoods lost. People’s mental health has been affected and loneliness has been huge. Cunts need to start behaving. Follow the guidelines set out by knowledgable people. Wear your mask. Wash your hands. Don’t be a dick. We will recover.

I didn’t say it would happen immediately. But things will get better. We are not in the same shit as we were in 2008 on the whole. Many people who lost jobs/businesses/homes etc aren’t unemployed and homeless now. That’s recovery in my eyes. I hate Tories with every fibre of my being and I think the majority of their policies are absolutely abhorrent and are only beneficial to themselves and their pals. That’s not the issue at the moment though. Politics should be sat aside to deal with the pandemic in the best (and quickest) way possible. Parties should work together and not against each other.

This is a great time for warehouse and retail work (usually, I’m not sure how shops will fare this year...) Get in touch with agencies if you haven’t already, Adecco, Cordant, Manpower will be good places to start for warehouse/customer service work. If you are on Facebook, join job groups. I’ve seen loads of people posting on there for urgent work needing covered. It may be a week here and there but you’ll get to see which agencies are busy and they are the ones you want to make sure you’re registered with. Also, make sure you’re claiming what you’re entitled to. You may be entitled to a discount on your council tax for example that might take the pressure off a little bit. Best of luck!

Govanhill gets a fair amount of bad press - some justified and some outrageously exaggerated. The people who have been following the rules will begin to break them. The controls being put in place will never work whilst people choose to not follow them at all (and I’m meaning selfish idiots who are socialising and taking zero precautions - not someone visiting a sick relative for example) and I’m genuinely fearful for what that means for society.

Actual charity shops won’t be open/able to take donations but I believe homeless charities/street teams may still be able to take donations? As they are passing the items donated on to those in need, rather than selling on for cash for the charity I believe that would still count as essential. May be worthwhile getting in contact with Kindness Street Team or The Halliday Foundation? Particularly if the clothes are warm/winter clothes.

I’ve also discovered that this forms part of the factors maintenance policy so they’ve happily been pocketing cash and not fulfilling their end. I’ve managed to increase the pressure on the factors by contacting my letting agent again and speaking to other owners in the same development (they don’t have the pigeon shit - but the cost is split between the buildings) and it will hopefully get sorted soon. By someone adequately equipped to do so safely.

[This](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0758DV8CY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WdRYFbKQ46RH4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) is a pretty fascinating tale about a poisoning by a woman of her lover. The author includes excerpts of their letters as well.

Congratulations on your interview. Best of luck with it. As someone else mentioned, your college will have social clubs and hobby groups which are an easy way of meeting like minded people. Could be virtual if we’re still locked down by then. MeetUp could be something to look into as well and you should be able to find activities that you’re interested in. I’ve never lived on the islands so I can’t comment on the transition but Glasgow is generally a pretty friendly city. It’s quite diverse as well so you should be able to find something/somewhere to suit any interests you have.

I’m struggling with lockdown these days. Not just the fact that it’s gone on for so long or that I’m stuck at home most of the time. But the fact that it doesn’t make sense anymore - I feel people interpret the rules to suit themselves and some people are having to bend them just to scrape by. It’s a total shambles. Clear rules and direction from the start could have potentially prevented this absolute cluster fuck.

Exactly - I fully get that Covid exists and we need to take action to save lives, but what we’re doing isn’t working. There’s no optimism anymore either, I don’t feel like we’re any closer to getting back to normal life now than we were in April last year.

Yeah, was a bit weird. We’ve had issues with bird shit for months and months - apparently you need a specialist cleaner as it’s a health hazard to breathe in loads of bird shit. Wasn’t expecting it though and was quite trippy.

I knew it wasn’t good but didn’t realise there were so many diseases in their droppings. It took my letting agent to threaten going to environmental health for the factors to actually do something about it (despite it being part of their agreement). I did wonder for a minute what disaster happened overnight. The wee Henry hoover made it seem less scary for some reason.

I recommend the Sandyford as well - I went through years of pain and various visits to gynaecologists as well as very invasive testing with no results. One trip to the Sandyford clinic and I had a diagnosis and treatment plan. The staff were amazing as well. Also, if your wife is in severe pain, please contact NHS 24 or go to A&E - this is something my GP told me to do but thankfully I never needed to. I hope you both get some help soon.

Congratulations! My partner and I have started house hunting this year and have been outbid a few times. We’re taking a bit of a step back for now and just upping our savings. Not in a massive hurry to move so we’re happy to wait until the right property comes up as well. Our solicitor said they’d seen a lot of ‘sideways’ moves as well during the pandemic. People who have a fair bit of equity looking to sell and move into something relatively similar in size to their current property. I think being stuck at home for 18 months has prompted people to move to a new area or have a different set of walls to stare at.

I’ve eaten it plenty of times and never had this issue. Loads of older folk go in and it’s probably the only meal they have. I’ve known many people who scoff at it but I’d just say, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Simple food at a more than fair price.

Go to work. You don’t have a start date for anything else that’s potentially on the table or anything even concrete from the sounds of it. Not showing up with no notice is only going to piss the agency off so you’ll very likely never get offered work from them again. Your offers may not start for weeks and a few warehouse shifts bring in some cash until then as well.

My solicitor said we can expect to be going 10-20% over home report at the moment. We’re looking for a 3 bed with a garage and garden which I think ups the competition sadly. Flats are a little less desirable as a lot of people are looking for their own outside space so may get away with a bit less. I’ve basically resigned myself to not buying for at least a year just now and I’ll just be focussing on growing my deposit. Good luck!

I really rate the vitamin E range from Superdrug. The hot cloth cleanser is really great and even removes makeup. I don’t find it heavy or greasy but is still moisturising. Very often on some sort of deal - BOGOF or similar so is very budget friendly. I don’t have sensitive skin so it may not work for you. That’s often the hardest part about finding good skincare products! If you are going to try new products, I’d really recommend introducing them gradually in case of any reactions, it should be easier to pinpoint the exact cause.

I know exactly how you feel! The few properties we’ve put offers in for have been doing 25-30% over home report so you’re talking an additional £40k which I just don’t have. I’ve decided to stop looking for a bit and just keep on saving. Hopefully things stabilise a bit more next year, if not, I should have a deposit big enough for a new build as they are just a bit pricey for us at the moment.

I was speaking to a member of staff at Central today as I’m going on holiday next week by train and he was saying that he’s 80% confident the strike won’t go ahead and that an agreement will be met. He also said that even if it does happen, it may not be every single service that is affected as not every member of staff is a union member but they would need to prioritise some routes as they’d obviously have a massively reduced workforce.

I went to one of the ‘top’ schools (according to league tables) and do you know why they do so well on the leagues? Because if your teachers think there is a chance you’re not going to ace your exams, you don’t sit them. The headteachers were incredibly snobby and actively looked down on those from the poorer areas that were part of the catchment area (don’t worry, the school has now changed the catchment so those pesky scheme kids don’t get to go now!) and every single boy from my primary school was excluded before sitting exams. A few of them came from difficult home lives and I’m sure having some support and an education would have been highly beneficial to them. Not great for the stats though. I still hold a lot of resentment towards some of the teachers I encountered and have struggled with inferiority throughout my life due to the school I attended. I guess your headteacher screaming in your face that he won’t allow a little girl from a scheme ruin his school will do that to you though. The reason for me getting screamed at? Wearing my jacket as I was walking out the front door. I don’t think there’s an easy way to quantify a good school as imo, it’s not down to exam results, it’s down to the ethos of the school and the education they can provide. Do children leave as well rounded young adults with tangible skills? Or do they just look good on paper? I believe education is about helping people think for themselves, learn communication, problem solving etc. which is pretty tough to showcase.

I’d recommend Dukes Umbrella - it’s sort of pub grub with an upmarket twist so hopefully something for everyone!

I had a terrible experience at the Strathbungo location - massively expensive and cut off around 8 inches of my hair and was a terrible cut. Done by a senior stylist apparently and the manager simply told me it was fine and was happy with the work of the stylist. Other locations and stylists may differ of course but was charged over £100 for an all over colour and what was supposed to be a trim.

My household income is ~£60k at the moment and I’d say for the first time, we’re comfortable. However, if one of us lost our income, it would be tough on half that. Doable but would need to budget a lot more than we do now. I reckon around £45-£50k (as a household) would be ideal enough to cover bills and have a little left over for some comforts. Saying that, if my work wanted to offer me £86k, I’d definitely take it.

I paid just under £1300 for mine from a firm in Ayrshire. Not a private sale though so that did include conveyancing works. I’d have paid double for them, they were amazing! Company were called Mair Mathieson if you want to reach out to them and compare?

I went to the van when I was about 5 or so and asked for 10 jellies. Started crying when the guy asked me for more money than I had. Told him I only had 10p and he clicked that I just meant jelly sweeties. Didn’t understand what had happened at the time but years later it clicked that people must have been sending their kids to pick up drugs from the van. This would have been early 90s.

I like the fixed price menu at Spuntinis. Around £20 and you get 3 Italian tapas dishes, dessert and a drink.

I’ve just been through this and it’s a nightmare. We had a young couple show up to get a coffee table. Found it dumped round the corner the next morning. Was fuming as it sat out in the rain all night so is now for the bin. Absolute waste of time, could easily have said they’d changed their mind or given it back to me instead of dumping it.

Your GP would be unlikely to run tests when there are no symptoms. Why do you want this done? If this is just for your own knowledge, you’d need to go private.

Finishing tomorrow. Nothing official yet but I’m assuming we won’t need to stay logged on until 5pm. I’ve done approximately 35 minutes of work all week as I’ve got everything finished up for the year already.

Starter Packs in Govan would probably take them. They create packs for people moving into accommodation and are in need of basic household items such as crockery, bedding etc.

As a lone female travelling home to Cambuslang around 11pm, I thought I’d be better getting a taxi to my door. Went to get a black hack and was told it would be £37. I’ve never been charged more than £30 and Uber were quoting £14.50 (but didn’t actually provide a driver). That price is unaffordable, especially when the trains are still running so I’ll spend £3.80 on the train and take the safety risk over that price.

If you look at the land registry, you’ll see the final sale price but can be a few weeks / months after the sale before it is updated. I checked this for lots of properties I was outbid on and on the whole, even if I had the money, I wouldn’t have gone as high as a lot of the final sale prices!

I used Lorraine at Mair Matheson. They’re based in Newmilns but most of what we did was by phone or email. She kept me sane throughout the whole process and she was brilliant at keeping me informed and chasing up anyone she needed to.

We’ve been hybrid working for ages now. Most teams work either 2 or 3 days in the office. It’s one of those policies that they proclaim is flexible but in reality, you are expected to comply or be able to have a reason not to i.e. you have childcare issues that one week, and not just that you prefer working from home.

Is there such a think as a private dining room with its own bar (or table service) that you can hire out for a good few hours in town? Ideally with a projector screen as well. Google isn’t giving me much inspiration.

We spend probably around £400 a month for two of us. No kids or pets. We do rarely eat the same meal as each other which definitely increases the cost but we’re both fussy buggers but I’m ok with £200/month each. I should say that doesn’t include a lot of household or cleaning products as we tend to use Amazon subscribe and save so we can bulk buy and that’s probably an average of £20/month.

I previously used to recruit for banking roles who had similar background requirements. Hopefully this is helpful - All references needed to match what you’ve stated in your application in terms of dates - someone noted on their application they left a role in February and the referenced stated March. It had to be investigated and backed up and turned out that their last working day was beginning of Feb but the P45 was processed later hence the difference. Any gaps over 30 days had to be evidenced / explained. Some people were travelling and provided tickets as evidence. Some people were simply out of work and were able to provide a proof of earnings from HMRC to show that they weren’t in employment during that time. Some had to provide bank statements to show there was no income. Gaps weren’t necessarily an issue, it was proving you weren’t trying to hide anything unscrupulous. Best of luck!

This was pre-Covid so I’m not sure if things have changed since then. However we did have situations with people being out of the workforce for years with no income and they’d be able to pass the checks by showing bank statements showing no income. I always thought that was quite invasive so did recommend they redacted any outgoings as it was only incoming transactions that should have been reviewed.

Office Angels. Manager was a bully who didn’t support the team at all. Was made to not pay out holiday pay so the company would keep it. Would overcharge clients and underpay candidates to line their own pockets. I didn’t realise how shady their practices were until I left. Did my best for my candidates and I’m still in touch with a few many years later but horrible place to work.
