  • You could get involved in your local community council, they generally struggle for members and usually lack under 30’s by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 28th Jul 2022 6:51am)
  • £160k might not go that far. I’m assuming you’re under 35 in which case you should look at the western end of Partick towards Whiteinch or Queens Park around Torridale Street between Victoria Road and Pollokshaws Rd. You could also consider Dennistoun between Duke Street & Alexandra Parade. For up and coming areas and affordability you could try New Gorbals or some of the housing around the Saltmarket if you can get free parking. Govan also worth a look if you’re prepared to travel for the night out.. underground and bridge to west end approved. Parking spaces are always going to be a problem if you get home late in most of these pockets. If you’re looking for value for money you might consider a two bed family home near the airport and take a train or taxi in if you want a big night out .. by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 27th Aug 2022 5:29pm)
  • Yes and you might also want to consider Battlefield too as it’s a bit less expensive than the Pollokshaws Rd corridor .. bit of a faff to commute daily to the airport though … by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 28th Aug 2022 2:12am)
  • Mount Florida is a nice spot and getting quite gentrified these days as you say gig and match days can be a problem . These communities are all on the Cathcart Circle rail line to the city centre and there’s also a lot of cycling infrastructure either already in or being introduced I believe.. so it’s one of those areas of the city you won’t really need to use the car other than for work.. most of the areas I’ve pinpointed tend to attract under 35’s though obviously in the west end you’re getting more students. In the west end there’s also some of the streets off Queen Margaret Drive and on the fringes of Maryhill like Couston St worth a look too.. £160k is pushing it a bit though .. by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 28th Aug 2022 9:39am)
  • Arty walking tour- 1) Kelvingrove Gallery> Huntarian Museum > Mackintosh House> wander round Byres Rd and the lanes, Botanic Gardens > food at Oran Mor> wander round Finnieston 2)City Centre > Buchanan St> Princes Sq> Sloans> Merchant City > Goma> Trongate 103> Briggait > Barras /BaaD 3) Sounthside > Tramway > Strathbungo > Victoria Rd> Queens Park to Shawlands > Glad Cafe > bus to Pollok Park, Burrell & Pollok House … for gigs check out who’s on King Tuts, SWG3, Barrowland, Academy, Glad or Hydro .. for dancing depends on genre so others can advise also depends on how much money you’ve got to spend exploring the city. There’s lots of other things I’ve missed no doubt so check out the List or Skinny - if you’ve not been to Edinburgh before you should also spend a day over there, train only 45 minutes.. by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 5th Sep 2022 7:22am)
  • Have you thought of Govan? New bridge being built to west end, makes a lot of sense these days for students with the underground and cycle routes .. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 8th Sep 2022 7:11am)
  • Giffnock’ da suburban location but only a short journey by train to the city centre. It’s got the Orchard Park hotel and isn’t far from Shawlands and Strathbungo should be fine till you get somewhere more central,, by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 11th Sep 2022 1:34am)
  • I suppose the question is what do you mean by old? I’ve got Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful and Mick Jagger coming over for Saturday lunch and was thinking of a wee tea room in Helensburgh.. by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 14th Sep 2022 10:11am)
  • As well as spare room she could also try the Facebook pages for Glasgow’s west end or Southside.. Strathbungo/ Queens Park might suit or somewhere round Dennistoun/ High Street area. Maybe someone in New Gorbals has a spare room.. with living costs getting so high a share might help someone. by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 17th Sep 2022 7:02am)
  • Perhaps school pupils should be required to clean up those areas around the schools and the takeaways they litter at lunchtime.. then there’s also the drive through locations across the city, they should be charged an additional levy to clear up all the drive by litter they generate.. just saying. by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 21st Sep 2022 1:58pm)
  • Unlock your inner god. Work on your grammar, perhaps mastering the subtle difference between too and to and their and they’re. Then learn lots of useful facts, knock off a brilliant job, release a few million selling Adele, Phil Collins and Lewis Capaldi inspired albums and then go trade up to your perfect soul mate! 😆 You’ll look back on this time and wonder why you ever wasted yourself on her .. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 3:40pm)
  • Try New Gorbals or Laurieston, handy for walking or cycling to uni and two large breweries nearby.. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 4th Oct 2022 12:09am)
  • I’ve often wondered about the stories behind the city centre homeless, how do they fill their day, where do they go, what led them to their situation. We walk past them every day and never ask why? by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 5th Oct 2022 8:09am)
  • Ripe for hipsters and gentrification… by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 5th Oct 2022 12:50pm)
  • I’d probably stay in air b n b Paisley or somewhere like Bishopbriggs initially, they’re both a 10 minute commute into town on the train, ignore the nonsense, Londoners are welcome as long as they’re not patronising, arrogant or arses .. we don’t like that at all … by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 6th Oct 2022 8:32pm)
  • Have you thought of Stirling- incredibly central for everywhere and great countryside nearby. Kings Park is stunning if you’ve got the right budget ..if it’s a commute to Glasgow then Milngavie is a good shout .. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 11th Oct 2022 8:34am)
  • I went into a clothing alteration company on Sauchiehall St with a pair of trousers. Went through the back and could swear I saw the Man from Uncle.. 😆 by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 27th Oct 2022 4:05pm)
  • New Gorbals and Laurieston have great townhouses and are really handy for the city centre. The fundamentals of the location are great and it’s continuing to gentrify steadily for families..further out there’s Crookston and for a more left field but well located community look at Pollokshaws ( no detached homes though) .. by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 29th Oct 2022 12:25am)
  • With interest rates rising, job security reducing and an ‘austerity budget’ to be announced soon then I’d expect the market to slow down significantly. It did in the 80’s, early 90’s and for a good 4 years from October 2008. It’s very cyclical apart from London, places like Glasgow’s West End and those suburban areas with high performing secondary schools.. what’s uncertain is how many people might decide to come to Glasgow cos they get priced out of other places or how many landlords decide to invest in property as an asset.. by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 2nd Nov 2022 7:04pm)
  • There’s many accents in Glasgow, try hanging out in the posher better diction neighbourhoods first like Hyndland, Byres Rd or Giffnock rather than the ones where they speak through their noses . You can then practice your understanding on Billy Connolly and Kevin Bridges YouTube clips- welcome to our mad, mental city! by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 3rd Nov 2022 6:28am)
  • Rutherglen and Burnside are really nice, with some beautiful architecture up the hill, churches, parks and a proper sense of community with good facilities at the core ..whereas .. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 8th Nov 2022 8:56am)
  • The core has some great potential significantly more going for it than Robroyston. When you go up the hill a bit into Burnside the architecture is cracking.. by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 9th Nov 2022 12:47am)
  • The issue with Govanhill historically was it was undermined so people couldn’t get mortgages on the properties. Landlords moved in, bought with cash and weren’t too choosy about who they let to. This led to a huge reputation problem. The mining problem has however now been solved and many of the worst landlords are gradually being pushed out as the area is being slowly gentrified. West of Victoria Rd is fine though compared to other pockets of the city and east of Victoria Rd is slowly improving. Like most areas though it need people to get involved organise themselves to clear up the litter, dodgy landlords, sort the back courts and weed out criminal behaviour. In terms of location, shops, cafes and potential it’s one of the most exciting pockets of the city.. by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 18th Nov 2022 9:12am)
  • Very simple:- public education. seriously big fines. penalties which include six months picking up litter. ban on chewing gum. less drive throughs and penalties for takeaways that are causing an area problem. Let’s follow the German and Singapore standards before the future deadly rat bourne plague forces idiots to change our attitude to casual littering… by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 19th Nov 2022 12:46pm)
  • So the education of 30 classmates is completely undermined, life chances ruined because of one or two little shits. Teachers work really hard, careers and mental health wrecked because they are not allowed to exclude dysfunctional losers and criminals. Parents of course who have also failed see nothing wrong with their previous little darlings causing such damage to others around them.. the world really has gone mad… by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 20th Nov 2022 12:42am)
  • It’ll never happen. The problem is one of inclusion at all costs of those with anger management and sociopathic issues, the ‘exclusion’ of the majority. The units that once provided them with the help they needed have been closed down over the years. It’s been a false economy those because of the damage they do to the learning of everyone else. I grew up with the belt and whilst it kept the majority of people in check it never had any impact on the ‘psychos’. I managed to scramble out of the worst classes in the school it was an absolute riot, once I made it into decent classes though the kids just had the head down and worked hard.. it was straight out of Darwin’s survival of the fittest.. Many kids in the so called ‘diddy’ classes actually had a lot of potential but it was impossible to break out when the class was dragged down by these morons. ( who should have been in specialist units) madness looking back to see those around then being led down a path of no qualifications, shit jobs, heroin etc .. by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 20th Nov 2022 11:26am)
  • I think there’s a bit of a location issue perhaps they need to think about.. Whole Foods chose Giffnock for its affluent demographic but unfortunately there’s a lack of disposable income on Victoria Rd and a lot of strong competition from independent Asian businesses on fruit and veg. The cafe suits the hipster vegetarian demographic but the shop may be too expensive for this. Maybe it would be better suited to the Pollokshaws/ Kilmarnock Rd corridor that pulls customers in from the affluent suburbs. It will also work in the West End and Edinburgh of course.. It’s a fantastic institution for the Southside though so I hope you make it through these challenges.. by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 26th Nov 2022 11:54am)
  • Yea, in Italy they know how to behave on alcohol though.. by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 4th Dec 2022 9:49am)
  • I think it’s a great idea, if you really need alcohol on an hour journey then perhaps you’ve got a bit of an addiction problem you need to reflect on..Seriously though from puking up, f’ing and blinding on a rush hour train in front of children, getting wide and misogynistic with other passengers a civilised country shouldn’t need to put up with this crap. A train is not a licenced space or pub ( the logic being the guy behind the bar can call time or a bouncer can throw you out..) by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 4th Dec 2022 9:56am)
  • Lilt, Irn Bru, Coke, Flesh Orange take your pick from WH Smith and Central, lots of takeaway coffee spots too to choose from.. by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 4th Dec 2022 10:00am)

  • Valuation roll saa.gov.U.K. will tell you who owns it …. by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 19th Dec 2022 12:57pm)
  • Huge fines for littering, more community litter picks and school kids clearing up their mess after they’ve gone out for lunch, tax on drive throughs to pay for clearing up.. it’s a really clatty city and it’s down to people not taking responsibility for the mess… by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 30th Dec 2022 12:04am)
  • Most under 35 pre-family professionals tend to live in either the West End, Dennistoun or the communities around the Queens Park, plenty parks, public transport, bars, restaurants and convenience to city centre. If you have a car you can be at the Ayrshire coast within half an hour.. for flats outside Glasgow, Southside of Paisley around Brodie Park is nice or a modern flat around the abbey. Handy for Linwood, 10 minutes by train into Glasgow City Centre, convenient by car for Braehead shopping centre and Silverburn shopping centre. Left field places might be Kilmalcolm, Kilbarchan, Bridge of Weir, Houston, Johnstone though they tend to be a bit more family oriented ( all are convenient for cycle track and countryside though) check out Datashine Scotland or Datashine Commute if you want to find out more about some neighbourhoods.. 😃 by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 30th Dec 2022 7:06pm)
  • EK is a new town and lacks character, it’s quite high up so the microclimate isn’t good if you’re trying to commute if the snow comes down. If you’re thinking of that end of the city Burnside is nice though and handy for the M74 and M8 if you’re happy to commute further to Linwood, peak travel can be pretty horrendous though with traffic by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 30th Dec 2022 7:16pm)
  • Burnside is a gem- the beautiful red sandstone villas and terraces worth a look .. by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 30th Dec 2022 7:34pm)

  • Not sure if the city can have it both ways, on the one hand encouraging more people to live in the city centre, then on the other making it impossible for people to have a decent night’s sleep in the city centre.. even more time for predatory misogynistic behaviour, pishing and puking doorways, neds fighting one another and still miles behind the sensible Italian and French café culture and low levels of alcoholism.. 🫣 by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 31st Dec 2022 10:41am)
  • The Apollo. The Burns Howf. The Doune Castle.. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 5th Jan 2023 10:52am)
  • Here’s the thing though how much of the traffic in Glasgow’s communities comes from neighbouring authorities? Glasgow ratepayers are among the poorest yet fund museums, galleries, international attractions and have some of the lowest car ownership in Scotland. Perhaps our suburban neighbours need to stop approving house building in places where you need to own a car, get some park and rides In operation and start paying a fairer share of the costs for maintaining the city centre and destinations like Merchant City, Finnieston etc just saying…😃 by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 7th Jan 2023 12:06pm)
  • People have a right to live in a city where babies don’t get their heads smashed in with a brick. Someone will know exactly who this little psycho is and hopefully he will meet a bigger nastier psycho soon … by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 13th Jan 2023 12:16am)
  • Le Corbusier was a pure diddy. If we’d followed him we’d have been saddled with a Soviet city centre, bring the fuckers down and invite the best global architects to come and design something world class the city can be proud of for the next 100 years, low maintenance, leading environmental standards and low crime…. 👍 by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 14th Jan 2023 7:08am)
  • Suggest checking out Queens Park, East Strathbungo, Victoria Road area of the city, you’d fit in fine there, lots of interesting independent shops, creative people, many languages and cultures 😁 by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 15th Jan 2023 11:09am)
  • Submit a complaint to planning enforcement and copy this into all of your local Councillors who cover the ward. They will all then pick up the phone to Planning Enforcement to ensure prioritisation. If nothing changes then suggest continuing to write to your councillors… planning issues, conservation area, environmental health, health and safety, insurance issues are all there from what you suggest.. by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 16th Jan 2023 3:29pm)
  • Another Corbusier eyesore for the city, how much nicer would George Square look if it wasn’t there. Thankfully the whole city centre didn’t go down that path in the 60’s as was proposed.. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 19th Jan 2023 7:35pm)
  • Fine maybe for Brasilia or Bratislava but not overshadowing Glasgow’s principal buildings and civic space.. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 19th Jan 2023 7:41pm)
  • Fair point, duly amended… 🤭 by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 19th Jan 2023 8:01pm)
  • Depends on your budget. Top League for under 35’s Dennistoun, Battlefield, Queens Park, Shawlands, East Pollokshields, Mount Florida. West End west of Byres Road. Student hangouts:- Woodlands, Yorkhill/Finnieston, Partick, Garnethill. Up and coming:- Govan, New Gorbals, Cessnock/Ibrox, Carlton, Tollcross. .. .. then there’s‘affordable suburban homes worth having a look at as the price difference between homes with gardens and flats isn’t as wide as you’d think if you’re prepared to commute a bit… by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 20th Jan 2023 12:14pm)
  • I filmed it, put it on Facebook and my mates absolutely loved it. It falls into the ‘ so bad it’s good’ category. Good luck to him, much better than the Masked Singer or X Factor…🐈🐈‍⬛🐈 by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 25th Jan 2023 4:08pm)
  • I love the vibe of the communities around the Queens Park in the summer, how friendly most people are, the diversity, creative artsy vibe and the way the summer light bounces off the red sandstone. There’s no where like it in the world. I love how it’s less edgy than the East End and less arsey than the West End… 😄 by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 26th Jan 2023 2:54pm)
  • I think before daydreaming about this we should start figuring out where we can get the money. Perhaps absorbing the suburbs where most of the traffic originates would be a good start, turning Glasgow from a city with 600000 population into Into one of 1.5m residents, next step we start taxing all the rogues who sit on vacant land and empty properties for years, next we have a road toll on the M8 to encourage people to use public transport, next we remove Land and building transaction tax on homes within the city centre and main neighbourhoods to encourage more people to choose to live near public transport hubs, we impose a tax on new homes in the countryside and incentivise people to buy and refurbish old homes in the city and to convert underused city centre properties into affordable homes…the state of Glasgow’s tenements are a time bomb waiting to explode .. by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 30th Jan 2023 6:33pm)
  • I agree, we need to do what’s right but even now we still don’t have a South facing waters edge Sunday brunch cafe on the Clyde between Glasgow Green and the Transport Museum. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 31st Jan 2023 9:41am)
  • Slaters are great, so helpful, good quality, good value for money, alterations turned round quickly, even mailed the suit to London from Glasgow when alterations were complete..been a fan for 40 years.. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 31st Jan 2023 4:25pm)
  • I think part of the problem is that too many people use cars for the simplest of journeys. Back in the day we used to walk a mile and a half to school, rain hail or shine, now I see mothers driving their kids virtually round the corner. They don’t make the connection they are the problem and if there were less cars their children could walk or cycle to school safely on the cycle routes provided often provided for them. Cyclists however do need to play their part too with high viz and lights, stop the red light roulette, the delivery cyclists in Glasgow City Centre are the worst for this careering around on black bikes in the dark like ninjas. by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 1st Feb 2023 8:55am)
  • Every weekend they’d make a fortune if they started booking people for parking illegally on disabled spaces instead. Can’t believe the thoughtlessness of some people on designated spaces near Buchanan Street.. by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 4th Feb 2023 7:02pm)
  • Depends on where in Glasgow you’re planning to live. If you’re planning to move to one of our wonderful schemes you may have to start communicating through your nose and stop using your teeth to pronounce phrases like ‘huv a nice day mate’ or how ye doin bud ..try watching this educational film.. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp9xVW6xi28 by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 4th Feb 2023 10:32pm)
  • I don’t mind paying to park but the problem with the science centre is for most customers with young families it’s too expensive. I took the kids once and left it at that. If the charging had been indirect cafe/gift shop etc I’d have gone regularly like Kelvingrove. Fine for tourists but most customers will come in the winter from a 20 mile radius.. same thing happened with the big idea in Irvine back in the day and it closed after only 3 years. by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 12th Feb 2023 11:28pm)

  • Nothing at all- maybe we could swap some of our bams for young go ahead Londoners and older London downsizers- people willing to roll up their sleeves and make Glasgow even better, people bringing lots of ideas, a go ahead spirit, bringing disposable income and helping to create jobs and businesses, what’s not to like… by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 17th Feb 2023 2:29pm)
  • Definitely Young’s Interesting Books a good shout by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 19th Feb 2023 6:49pm)
  • Singapore type heavy fines. Drive throughs should include car reg numbers on all packaging to stop drive by littering. Ban the sale of chewing gum. Less disposable packaging and more standardised biodegradable packaging across all products. Ban silver foil and polystyrene packaging. Promote bottle and can return scheme. Introduce community reparation scheme, those who get caught dropping it need to be forced to join a local litter squad for a month, same with minor disorder offences instead of fines. TV messaging campaigns like they had in the 70’s. Introduce litter picks in secondary schools for most disruptive pupils. License takeaways so if they become a significant source of littering in their area the licence can be revoked and they have to close for a month until the problem is cleared up… by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 21st Feb 2023 8:27am)

  • Meanwhile in Paris, Scotland played France at rugby, there was no trouble at all between the fans and the players shook hands with one another after a bruising game. No sectarianism whatsoever, no overpriced merchandise and ridiculously prices season tickets. Perhaps we need to take a few lessons from rugby as a sport and get the Ned element out of football. If only more schools taught this instead- a game with a place for tall, short, fat and where being a 20 stone brick shithouse is a proper asset… never mind waiting 90 minutes for one goal nonsense.. by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 27th Feb 2023 7:00am)

  • Lol- football is a perfectly good game, it’s just all the shit that has to go with it we’re all so tired of in the West of Scotland- all these sectarian songs about 300 year old Irish battles sung by people who don’t actually go to church anyway and on the one hand flying the tricolour flag of a completely different country some fans have little or no connection to and the other side celebrating the Union Jack which has turned into such a toxic brand emblematic of the far right. Where is modern Scotland in all of this crap? I’d agree with one thing though, rugby has to become safer though 😃 by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 28th Feb 2023 7:30am)
  • Every time a Rangers fan commits an offence near a game, as part of their sentence they should now be made to carefully fix the bridge or face a jail sentence. You just know what’s going to happen - the Council will fix it and they’ll come back and fucking vandalise it again, no wonder the Council has no money, pouring millions into budgets for education and social workers for these fuckwits.. Went a gig various mates over the years.. one just wanted to fight anyone who stood in front of us or were wittering on during the gig and another moaned all night about how he thought the band were shite and we left early to shut him up.. • PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW- PEOPLE MAKE SLUMS Too many people in Glasgow lack pride in their city and have a culture which presumes everything will be done for them. They throw litter on the ground and think everyone else but particularly the Coonsil will pick it up for them. The problem is it is actually now damaging perceptions of the city for tourists, investors and the kind of people who can help bring jobs to our communities. Don’t get me started on the dangers of the next rat bourne pandemic as we will be in deep shit as a city if it happens.. Much tougher fines are needed and anyone caught littering or dumping rubbish or who commits petty crimes should be have a choice - pick up the rubbish for 6 months or face a huge fine or jail sentence. I’d clamp right down on drive throughs and have a licensing scheme for takeaways- if they are contributing to a problem in an area their license is revoked for a month.I’d also ban the sale of chewing gum in the city, fine people for spitting on the street.. Time sadly for Glasgow to go down the Singapore route on this issue. We’ve had lots of chances to sort the problem but people have not stepped up to the plate and taken the responsibility needed to achieve the ambition of making Glasgow the great city it deserves to be. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 7th Mar 2023 4:02pm)

  • This isn’t about politics, although personally I consider myself open minded to independence and are very much at the Labour end of the economy spectrum. It’s about trying to figure out how we can solve this problem before it actually becomes a serious barrier to supporting the reputation and jobs of the city.. sometimes sadly we make too many excuses for people like the fairly affluent 20 somethings in their Vauxhall Corsa’s who drive to McD’s with their mates and throw everything on the verges as they speed past.. it’s not all about poor misunderstood 3rd generation uneducated unemployed wee souls who don’t understand what a bin is for. If only we had more control from those darned English oppressors. Cleaning up the city is part of the solution to their challenges…I visited Loch Lomond recently and it was an absolute midden, honestly a world class tourist and area of outstanding beauty and we allow other Scots to trash it… ? by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 7th Mar 2023 4:41pm)
  • Look, here’s the thing Bird Flu has already moved to mammals. Some people have already died and more will follow. NY times recently published an article suggesting a 57% mortality rate for humans who catch bird flu. Rats are an epidemic in Glasgow and the more litter we drop the worse they will become. It is only a matter of time before bird flu or similar pandemic will migrate to our rat population. The poorest people of the city live in the most overcrowded and heavily littered pockets of the city so tackling litter in Glasgow is a public health emergency. Let’s not dance around the politics of this it needs everyone from all political perspectives to figure out an urgent solution. Criminalise it. Solve it in the same way as we tackled those who didn’t wear safety belts, drove while drunk or with one hand on a mobile phone. No one wants to see a return to the days of the Black Death but trust me it will happen if we don’t get a grip of this.. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 7th Mar 2023 5:08pm)

  • Calm down BGS and Damo Suzuki, it was a genuine question, simply asking why some people think it’s okay to spend their lectures scrolling over their phones and talking inane drivel throughout? FfS people are drowning in the channel for opportunities like that, African villagers are sitting in tents of 60 students for the chance to become doctors, lawyers and scientists. Afghan women aren’t even allowed to go to school.. For some though the phone and last nights 1 -1 football draw is more compelling. Isn’t the opportunity to learn, something we should be valuing more, that’s all .. by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 18th Mar 2023 9:51am)
  • 1) It’s precisely because he’s an adult he thinks he’s arrived in a Primary School 2) Lecturers ignore 3) Students are mocked if they raise it as an issue 4) I’m just a bemused onlooker is pondering why so many parents put themselves in serious debt to help send their offspring to uni when they are so clearly taking the piss. by ScoobyCat4 (Sat 18th Mar 2023 10:58am)
  • Perhaps, but if this is a widespread issue then it’s a problem.. maybe I’m just old and don’t really get it when people talk through movies at the cinema, gigs, live theatre.. Is there an ‘ability to focus and attention span ‘ issue these days.. mobile phone, over stimulation problem, too much coke or ecstasy in the water supply or ADHD epidemic… ? Affordability is a real issue though so worth looking at places in an easy commute like Paisley.. good luck ! by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 21st Mar 2023 9:30am)

  • Sounds like she’s got a growing alcohol and addiction problem, she may need help with, it’s not a good recipe for a long term happy relationship. She’s completely free to do what she wants in life but it doesn’t sound as if it’s what you want from yours. Not letting you know where she is sounds pretty thoughtless, for all you know she could be in a ditch or a hospital.. is a very basic courtesy in any relationship.. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 23rd Mar 2023 3:58pm)

  • Ideally you’d want to live near to where you work so you’d save money on travel or wouldn’t need to run a car, the biggest hospitals would be the Royal Infirmary or the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital or Gartnavel. In those cases I’d be looking at Dennistoun, Govan or Anniesland/Knightswood. I’d try renting though until you got properly settled though .. by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 27th Mar 2023 7:47am)
  • Welcome to the Southside, the communities around the QP have a great buzz, creative scene, cafe and food culture. Generally much more down to earth people, much more diverse, many different cultures, people much more into working together to improve the place, be it back court initiatives or creative events whereas in the West End they seem have a greater sense of entitlement…More people 25+ than the West End, less students and a bit less pretentious… the sandstone also looks much better in the summer in the Southside.. by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 29th Mar 2023 1:08pm)
  • Perhaps it’s because multiple deprivation is sadly more evident in Glasgow it motivates people to try to make a difference. For most people the student years are the time when they become more politically aware and move away from their parents political thinking. With the greatest respect to St Andrew’s or Edinburgh, they are hardly the universities where you’d experience a political epiphany.. 🤔 by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 31st Mar 2023 10:31am)

  • Maybe all the drivers from outside the city who choose to use PRW for parking and as a rat run could use the train or a bus instead to get to the city centre. Why not make Ibrox and Cessnock nicer, less noisy and polluted for the people who live there instead .. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 18th Apr 2023 1:09pm)
  • The fundamentals of the Gorbals are very good, well built modern homes, conveniently located for the city centre, Glasgow Green, Bridge St underground and bus routes, relatively affordable compared to other pockets of the city. Reputationally it still caries a lot of baggage unfortunately but like most neighbourhoods it’s a small minority involved. It can only get better if more people choose to live there, bring their energy and efforts to work with local people to continue to improve things. 😃 by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 20th Apr 2023 10:04am)
  • It’s been at that tipping point for years in terms of regeneration and ‘gentrification’, I think it’s time has come though and if I had a legacy from a wealthy old granny this could be the time to buy in and set up the sourdough bakery.. 😁 by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 20th Apr 2023 12:08pm)
  • Same evangelical Christian fundamentalists from the US who are happy to endorse the NRA and thousands of gun deaths each year.. protect the unborn but shoot the living. The same US far right evangelicals who support low taxes for the rich and minimum health care provision and support narcissists and misogynists like Donald Trump. When a woman can’t get a decent wage this country, a home she can afford or can’t afford to eat or put on the heating I’d say planned parenthood is essential in the U.K. and the evangelicals should butt the f@*k out of women’s right to choose. by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 21st Apr 2023 4:51pm)
  • You didn’t say which uni, but after a year in halls, somewhere like Woodlands, Hillhead or Finnieston would be good places to live to get the full benefit of being a student in the city. Like all cities it can be rough if you go to the wrong areas, hang out in the student spots, the student unions initially, avoid the neds and don’t get wide with them. Have a great time! by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 24th Apr 2023 8:08am)

  • DELETED Most people under 35 buy a flat for only four or five years, with all the economic uncertainty the market however can’t continue in the same way it has over the last few years, so I see prices levelling out to wait for wages to increase- better to push the boat out and try to buy a house with a garage and garden you’ll enjoy for 10 years instead. Yes you might rattle about for a few years but you get so much more space and aren’t relying on factors, or having decent neighbours around you.. you can still get to a pub or join the buzz by getting a bus and taxi it’s just a bit quieter that’s all.. by ScoobyCat4 (Fri 5th May 2023 1:15pm)
  • The bottom line here is if you live or work in the city centre and you have asthma it’s a problem. I started a job in the city centre 20 years ago and didn’t have asthma but now I do. Working more from home since 2020 it’s been so much better. No antibiotics, no inhalers at all during the winter months. by ScoobyCat4 (Sun 7th May 2023 12:22am)

  • It sounds to me like a subtle breach of the equalities act different treatment for being older v a young couple. I’ve seen a documentary about restaurants doing a similar thing as part of their marketing, offering the young cool people a table by the window and put a guy with Bell’s palsy at a table at the back - cool happening places don’t want old ugly or disabled people chasing away the younger customers… by ScoobyCat4 (Mon 29th May 2023 12:55pm)
  • Not England but I was struck by some similarities to Barcelona - Place de Catalunya v George Square both taps aff and one has a fountain that plays classical music at night. La Ramblas v Argyll Street both edgy as f@“k and lots of dodgy characters and disinterested police - Avda de Portal v Buchanan Street very similar and a two luxury department stores ..Place de Carlos Pi I Sunyer v St Enoch Square edgy café culture and lots of chancers mooching about..Glasgow Harbour v Barcelonetta na we totally f@“ked that one.. Glasgow’s schemes yup Barcelona has those perched on the hill too sadly.. history of radicalism , tanks on the streets Glasgow and Barcelona both on the same page with that one too. Grid iron street patten in both city centres - checks out on that one too. Overall great cities to visit but you need to keep your wits about you when you do.. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 30th May 2023 10:28am)
  • For reference suggest you watch the film Quadrophenia made in the late 1970’s about kids in the 60’s going to Brighton beach. A story of misunderstood youth, self discovery, music and redemption. Replicated in Irvine by Oasis legendary performance in the 1990’s and part of the Ayrshire summer season ever since ( apart from the Oasis sadly…) fyi - Harry Styles, Ed Sheerin, whinging boys or crap rappers weren’t in the film thankfully. by ScoobyCat4 (Wed 31st May 2023 2:56pm)

  • There’s nothing like a city for hoovering money out your pocket, thankfully I’m now working remotely for most of the time and have saved a fortune in travel and lunches. When I was mostly in the city centre though I bought my own coffee pot to enjoy a decent cup of caffeine throughout the day and usually bought from the supermarkets, a pack of chicken and bottle of tap water was so much cheaper than the pre-made sandwiches.. some people prepare food at home and eat in the office.. personally I’ve always quite enjoyed a walkabout with a bit of music on and think it’s much healthier to get a break from the desk.. hybrid working though is the best deal all round if your job suits it.. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 1st Jun 2023 4:10pm)

  • The building’s privately owned so the buck stops with them, you can see how neglected it’s been since the Cell closed and lack of measures to stop vandals get on the roof and cover the place with graffiti. It’ll no doubt be the usual group of neds who’ve been causing mayhem around the area over the last 5 years behind it. Housing seems a good idea for the upper floors, maybe even add an extra floor. • After leaving uni there were no jobs out there in the early 80’s, did some volunteering in my field of work for a couple of months to help the cv, then knocked off a government funded YTS scheme for 4 months till the funding finished, then a 16 week government funded business management training course for aspiring entrepreneurs and after that the rest they say is history permanent job and successful professional career from then on. It was a good scheme and stopped me from languishing about, kept me moving forward- it’s not cheap labour I think we all got something out of it. So many environmental projects out there needing to be done, tackling Glasgow’s monumental litter problem, they should bring back a fully funded version of it for people who are taking the piss, directionless stoners and the professional beggars, put something back into the city rather than watch everyone else do the grafting perhaps.. by ScoobyCat4 (Tue 25th Jul 2023 7:29am)

  • The issue is many of these properties are tied up in pension funds or self investment pensions- most investors take a long term view of the properties rather than actively manage them and spread their losses & gains across a portfolio. Many landlords are disinterested in working collectively with other landlords to improve areas and this wouldn’t happen at all if the Council weren’t trying to do that. It’s a classic case of market failure.. Another issue is no rates are paid at all on vacant land so there’s no incentive for land owners to actually do anything for years. Many property owners have also got a completely unrealistic idea of value of their property, the rates system based on notional rental value just makes the problem worse .. by ScoobyCat4 (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 8:22pm)
