  • As someone who recently moved here from NYC this place feels way safer imo by Skatesafe (Wed 18th Sep 2019 1:41pm)
  • I had a similar problem (student from the US). There's a reason why most of the international students stay in those manufactured accommodations. You'll definitely need to offer 6 months up front in most cases (sometimes more IMO). by Skatesafe (Wed 18th Sep 2019 1:52pm)
  • You can use the SIMD index from the Scottish government to get an idea of the area (neighborhood income, housing quality, access to healthcare/ education). It's quite detailed. [https://simd.scot/#/simd2020/BTTTFTT/12/-4.2172/55.8624/](https://simd.scot/#/simd2020/BTTTFTT/12/-4.2172/55.8624/) In theory, the more red areas are considered deprived. Could be useful, there's a lot of great data out there. by Skatesafe (Fri 10th Jul 2020 11:19pm)
  • Since you're in the west end definitely check out Dawsholm Park- you can take the Kelvin walkway all the way there. I really enjoy all of the little trails littered through the park. Also exploring the tree lined lanes and streets in hydland near partickhill is great for a bit of exploring by Skatesafe (Tue 14th Jul 2020 1:44pm)
  • Ottoman coffeehouse is a bit of a hidden gem! It isn't what you expect as you walk in. The coffee is lovely (especially the traditional unfiltered type). Also the food is amazing, probably one of the best kebabs I've ever had. by Skatesafe (Sun 18th Apr 2021 4:37pm)
  • I feel for you, I've been there. I know it's very difficult during all of these lockdowns, but as others suggested, try to find a few things you're interested in and really pursue those things. I know first hand, when I really threw myself into hobbies I became much happier and confident, people like happy and confident people, and in a roundabout way, this made it way easier to make friends. I regularly run, restore old bikes, climb and love hiking/backpacking. I've met friends through every one of those hobbies! by Skatesafe (Thu 20th May 2021 12:35pm)
  • Thistle books close to paesanos in the westend is my favorite by Skatesafe (Fri 15th Oct 2021 3:35pm)
  • Such great points. Education/ funding would be a good start, I also think adequate and fulfilling jobs for the parents themselves plays a huge role. IE - funding may ease some tension but if a parent is born into your average east Glasgow family, what incentive is there for the parents to develop skills to be passed on? Children of today need **meaningful** employment and social mobility so that the next generation has a chance, policies promoting these 2 metrics should be at the top of the SNP's list. Meanwhile Boris is full steam implementing Tory Austerity 2.0 ™ and Nicola's too busy shilling for Indyref. by Skatesafe (Thu 21st Oct 2021 5:01pm)
  • I’m from the US so I know how much of a headache this can be. Your best bet is to try and find a laid back landlord posting on gumtree or something similar. If you have enough savings you can also offer 6 months rent upfront to the letting agencies. My first year in Glasgow (3 years ago) I went this route and was able to secure a flat. I now live in a flat owned by mutual friends and didn’t need a guarantor. by Skatesafe (Sat 26th Mar 2022 11:22am)
  • Hang in there. Quite a lot of people are in the same boat at the moment and I think lots of people are still apprehensive about getting back out there (ie your mates). We’ve just been put through one of the most elaborate social experiments of the last century. How did I cope? Mountain biking! I spent months doing it alone and finally met some people on the trails within the past few months - this has been a lifesaver for me and my mental health. Still - now that the suns coming out and people are warming back up , this is the perfect time to find new hobbies and meet likeminded folk. I would say - try to find something you think is interesting that pushes you to go outside and interact with the world and force yourself to make the leap and go and do that thing (ik this is easier said than done but you’ll thank yourself for it if you do go through with it). Some examples that come to my mind: sketching, photography, hillwalking, foraging, even a solo pint at a pub with nice people (they are out there) : you get the picture. Feel free to message me OP I’ve been in a similar place. by Skatesafe (Thu 21st Apr 2022 8:41pm)
  • I’m from southern USA in a state with lots of Mexican influence- Mexican food is by far the cuisine I miss the most. Rafa’s in the hidden lane is BY FAR the best Mexican tacos you can get - still missing fajitas and enchiladas but this place does the trick. by Skatesafe (Sat 11th Jun 2022 12:18pm)
  • Try Rafas for tacos - topolabamba is decent by Skatesafe (Sat 11th Jun 2022 12:20pm)
  • Love phoenix, I have family from there and grew up with Sonoran mexican. Lupe Pintos is great I often buy chilies and tortillas for my enchiladas there! I live quite close by and actually planning to give the tamales a shot later in the week! Thanks for the suggestion…. by Skatesafe (Mon 13th Jun 2022 12:09am)
  • I actually love Sacred Tum but definitely a different sort of experience from the more authentic stuff you can find in my home city and doens’t really fill my craving for mexican food in the same way. Do love that place though. by Skatesafe (Mon 13th Jun 2022 12:20am)
  • As young professional (no kids yet) American living here for about 3 years now I can offer my prospective- 1. Despite well intentioned focus on poverty and homelessness, the bar is set so much higher here in the UK and Scotland than the US that the homelessness situation isn’t a terribly huge problem in most areas. That said, the drug issue is a big problem here, I’ve only really noticed needles ect in the city cintre (not that it’s not a problem elsewhere). My girlfriend feels much safer in Glasgow than she did in London, and I’ve never felt in danger (aside from cycling, drivers are nuts). 2. West end is nice and family filled, especially areas like Hyndland though this is one of the priciest areas in the city. I would really recommend visiting the south side if you appreciate trendier areas. Areas around queens park like strathbungo are filled with young families and has all of the coffee shops, pubs, and independent bookstores you could wish for. Glasgow seems like a great place to raise a family! 3. Though there are assholes everywhere I’d say you’re less likely to have an issues here as Scotland is one of the more socially inclusive countries in the world especially in places like the west end and Southside, I can’t speak from experience on this. Lastly while people are a amazingly friendly here and very accepting of international backgrounds, integrating here like you can in London (as it’s a huge international city) isn’t possible in the same way. I think people are very culturally proud of being Scottish which makes the place so unique but can be a little isolating at times. Not a huge issue but something to mention. by Skatesafe (Sat 11th Feb 2023 10:07am)

  • If she's open to a new hobby Nemo arts is awesome. It's technically a wellbeing charity but very laid back and aimed towards people who are isolated and want to socialize. They have bi-weekly classes (art, guitar, sewing and a few others I'm sure). I've volunteered briefly and had a great experience. I think it'd be perfect for you mum if she's interested in any of the activities. link: [https://www.nemoarts.org](https://www.nemoarts.org) by Skatesafe (Fri 12th May 2023 3:19pm)
  • Word is that GCC is involved in a pilot at the moment so this could soon be more widespread which would be an absolute godsend for these people, government bureaucracies are ineficient so these things do take time, but good people that care are working on this. Emphasize the **people** part which judging by many of these comments some folk forget! by Skatesafe (Fri 12th May 2023 3:28pm)
