  • You'd be surprised at how quickly those measures in place dissipate once people have had a few drinks. I work in one of the more cautious bars in town and I feel like I'm in the firing line. The other day someone got there bare arse out and rubbed it on a protective screen by SqueakyLeeks (Wed 2nd Sep 2020 11:23am)

  • Police Scotland definitely seem a lot calmer than the met, for example. I guess it's partly because of life in Glasgow being generally less stressful than in London but also the relative racial homogeneity has something to do with it. If it was a bunch of afghan boys in hoodies on the front lines by the vans I reckon things would have been different. by SqueakyLeeks (Fri 14th May 2021 9:57am)
  • Naw. The police were facilitating a immigration raid by the home office. Neighbours showed up to stop the van and then more and more turned out. There was a day long stand off in which the police formed a ring around the the van so protestors couldn't free the detainees. Eventually, in the evening, the police decided the let the prisoners go instead of escalating, since the protestors weren't budging. by SqueakyLeeks (Fri 14th May 2021 10:03am)

  • I like Govanhill, but it can be bad. Some of the tenements on the east side of Victoria Road are pretty run down and can be dangerous. Theres also a big waste and mouse problem in some areas. Then again, somewhere like Albert Avenue is probably classed as Govanhill and that seems quite fancy to me. by SqueakyLeeks (Wed 20th Jul 2022 3:27pm)
  • Can't believe this is getting upvotes. I hate my downstairs neighbours as much as next flat but calling the police at 11 on a weekend? God give me strength by SqueakyLeeks (Sat 6th Aug 2022 8:02pm)

  • I'm honestly quite bitter about our lockdowns given that it seemed to make little to no difference to the COVID situation in the end. I do feel like the city is finally starting to come back to life, though. Worst part is that I sometimes catch myself thinking that I basically wasted two years in the prime of my life. Depressing stuff. by SqueakyLeeks (Sun 16th Oct 2022 11:04am)
  • Cars are really bad for Zebra Crossings up here. Always find myself waiting because cars wanna speed past. I never would have thought drivers would be more courteous in London but it's something I've noticed. Makes me wonder if there's some different laws or expectations around it? by SqueakyLeeks (Fri 10th Feb 2023 9:46am)

  • Why are JSO crackpots? Is trying to avert climate catastrophe a crackpot agenda? by SqueakyLeeks (Fri 5th May 2023 1:55pm)
  • I think you could make this argument for extinction rebellion and insulate Britain, even if the goal was to get people talking. But JSO seem like the real deal to me. I guess I don't see why stunts like the van Gogh thing upset people so much. It got loads of attention and no one was hurt or even inconvenienced. If things like property damage and disrupting events put you off , then I feel like that's kind of on you. The goal is to start the conversation and that's worked. Its a far cry from the leftist activism of the 70s which may have done more harm than good.. I understand there was a snooker thing recently that annoyed people. Idk the full details but I'd imagine JSO is not fully centralised and groups can go off and plan their own protests. I guess some of these will have bad "optics". At the end of the day they are the main people actually standing the real crackpots - fossil fuel execs and their enablers in the gvmnt. Shit needs to get done and I'm glad someone's doing it. by SqueakyLeeks (Fri 5th May 2023 3:46pm)
  • Yes you're getting that confused There was a story about extinction rebellion being part funded by Aileen Getty, an oil heiress. First of all extinction rebellion is not JSO. Im a bit suspicious of ER in general but think JSO are the real deal. Secondly an heiress to an oil fortune wanting to fund efforts to combat climate change is a non story. Rich people do this all the time. James Murdoch is a climate activist. Honestly bums me out to see the amount of misinformation and recycled propaganda in this thread. by SqueakyLeeks (Sat 6th May 2023 12:13pm)

  • Hey, I've been curious about this whole thing since the news stories dropped a while back. Actually spent a while trying to suss out that NGO but didn't find anything to confirm my suspicions - do you have any sources for this stuff about Overseas Defenders? Would love to see for myself by SqueakyLeeks (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 1:59pm)
  • No You might as well say "is it just me or were things better 5 years ago?" It's a common phenomenon by SqueakyLeeks (Sat 4th Nov 2023 2:23am)
