  • Honestly, he seemed to have a tonne of patter, I'm sure he doesn't run out. I know others who've been on the tour and didn't get that tale. And I'd be more than happy to listen to him say it all again anyway. Besides, if me giving people a 30s snippet of the tour makes more folk go, all that means is they get to enjoy 74mins and 30s of material they haven't heard. by TorakMcLaren (Thu 15th Oct 2020 5:19pm)
  • Sorry you feel that way. I can't stress enough, the tour was phenomenal. This was far from one of the best bits (and I sincerely mean that as a complement to the guy). by TorakMcLaren (Thu 15th Oct 2020 5:22pm)
  • That's at least the second time that's happened on the M8. It happened at the offramp right outside the Royal about 4 years ago. Again, the car went up on the crash barrier and caught fire. Saw it from my work in the Uni building there. by TorakMcLaren (Sun 18th Oct 2020 7:39pm)
  • Does there need to be a point, other than that people might be interested? It's just an interesting coincidence that it happened twice on the same road about a mile apart within a few years. I don't know about you, but I don't come across flaming cars all that often. Despite what filmmakers might have you believe, cars tend not to erupt into fireballs from the average collision. Now I'm aware that the law of large numbers makes such coincidences inevitable, but that doesn't mean they're not curious when we encounter them. by TorakMcLaren (Sun 18th Oct 2020 11:27pm)
  • ...which is why I put it on the internet by TorakMcLaren (Mon 19th Oct 2020 9:51am)
  • You could head to East Kilbride, and walk to Calderglen park. There's then a trail through the glen along the course of the Rotten Calder (the burn) that heads to Blantyre and Hamilton, and you could get the bus/train back from there. Calderglen is a lovely area to walk, although you've missed the peak of the autumnal colours, sadly. Edit: Oh, and South Lanarkshire is at the same level as Glasgow, which I *think* means you're okay to travel between them...maybe? by TorakMcLaren (Sun 1st Nov 2020 1:05pm)
  • I don't know if it's your think, but if you play Pokémon Go, there is a good group in Glasgow. Check out the Facebook page, and you might find some folk you can meet up with outside. by TorakMcLaren (Wed 4th Nov 2020 10:07am)
  • [Hoping this doesn't come across as pure pedantry, but at least as interesting pedantry, which may be my superhero name...] Looks great, but a full rainbow would be a circle. You don't see them often, though, because the ground gets in the way! :) by TorakMcLaren (Sun 15th Nov 2020 11:38pm)
  • Here in EK, the police have actually encouraged people to cycle on the pavement (I may even have heard a community police officer say "You'll never get charged for cycling on the pavement in EK") when there isn't a designated area. But there's a big difference between here and Glasgow in terms of planning. by TorakMcLaren (Fri 27th Nov 2020 2:46pm)
  • There are plenty of pavements marked by the signs as shared spaces, but I think there's a casual understanding that pavements generally are. by TorakMcLaren (Fri 27th Nov 2020 6:48pm)

  • Don't think the turbines would matter, but that wiki explains it well. As far as I can tell, it's like you're not actually seeing a dense pillar of light. You're really seeing a sparse plane of light, but you're seeing it side on so it looks like a pillar. Make sense? by TorakMcLaren (Thu 7th Jan 2021 11:58am)

  • I live in East Kilbride. I love it when city folk freak out at a few cms of snow :p Be careful, absolutely! But I'd certainly not call this a blizzard. The main thing that makes the roads horrendous is the drivers! by TorakMcLaren (Thu 14th Jan 2021 11:14am)
  • Nah, I don't actually spend that much time on roundabouts *because they're so efficient compared to traffic lights!* by TorakMcLaren (Thu 14th Jan 2021 12:03pm)
  • I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the double letter is just so that one of you pays it. I.e. you will have to pay £180 per month for the property, not £180 *each*. My wife, myself, and our flatmate got that after we finished uni (different council area). We each got a letter for the amount mowed, but they only needed that paid once. It's just because you're not allowed to open each other's mail, and they want to make sure each responsible party has a chance to get the info. by TorakMcLaren (Mon 18th Jan 2021 4:42pm)
  • Even after 28 years, I still get amazed by how localised the EK weather is. I remember driving along the Queensway towards Busby one evening with the rain absolutely battering on the roof of the car. Passed under a footbridge just beyond McDs, and the rain just stopped. Like you know when you get that second or two of silence when you go under a bridge, and then it starts again? It was like that, but it didn't start again! by TorakMcLaren (Tue 19th Jan 2021 7:28pm)
  • Yup, TA centre off to the right by TorakMcLaren (Tue 19th Jan 2021 8:16pm)
  • Maybe a bit of both. Glasgow is probably warmer, but EK always seems to be the one where the weather is most bizarre. It may be the only place where there can be an Orange Walk in the snow by TorakMcLaren (Tue 19th Jan 2021 8:15pm)
  • About 200m vs Glasgow's 20m. by TorakMcLaren (Tue 19th Jan 2021 9:29pm)
  • Remember the snow in December 2010. I was in uni for a test that morning. Came out of it to chaos. My mate and I got kicked off the 21 at Shawfield and Michael-McIntyre walked the bus route back up the hill! 😂 by TorakMcLaren (Tue 19th Jan 2021 10:50pm)
  • We met some of our old teachers at the top of the hill up from Cathkin. They were walking home from school (Calderglen), had left at 12, and this was about 3:30! by TorakMcLaren (Wed 20th Jan 2021 12:29am)
  • Arguably it *is* the right way up in 3D space :p Like, if you were sitting on the Moon, you could look and see that both the photo and the actual bridge are the same way up. by TorakMcLaren (Sat 30th Jan 2021 6:43pm)

  • I don't think that's it for this one. My number didn't seem to have been leaked, but I still got a few. Seems the scan is called flubot. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/bleak-warning-android-phone-scam-20470300 by TorakMcLaren (Fri 30th Apr 2021 9:43am)
  • I think so. Still not sure how they're getting the numbers, but could just be spamming millions of numbers and hoping some work. I went through a phase recently of getting spam calls to my mobile from numbers that looked quite like my number. I think they were just guessing similar numbers. The trick there is that US mobile and landlines have the same format and are regional. Someone obviously made the mistake of thinking the UK was the same. by TorakMcLaren (Fri 30th Apr 2021 10:08am)
  • They've not. They brought back the 1901 version, but that's not the same as what we had until 2015. by TorakMcLaren (Mon 3rd May 2021 5:53am)

  • Probably a Giant House Spider, then. They're related to House Spiders, but bigger. It's getting colder outside, and they're beginning to hatch etc. If you want to keep them out, probably the easiest method would be to install air conditioning and keep your house colder than outside. Then they won't bother coming in. Of course, the main disadvantages of this approach are that you'll be paying a fortune for electricity, and your house will be colder than outside. by TorakMcLaren (Mon 30th Aug 2021 6:06pm)
  • The thing I find hilarious with Horizon fines is when you go on to the website to see the details, you get a heavily watermarked version of Google Maps showing you the location. In other words, they haven't actually paid Google the money required to get the proper version of Maps on their business website. by TorakMcLaren (Sun 5th Sep 2021 2:02am)

  • I had one of these sitting outside my work for months, probably over a year, and it had been there a couple of years before I started from when some refurbishments had been completed. One day I walked in in the morning and it had vanished. Then I got an email about some work that was getting done in my church's carpark in EK, and that there was a container occupying some of the spaces for a while. Yeah, it was the exact same one. Still had the name of my workplace on the keys. by TorakMcLaren (Thu 30th Sep 2021 6:09pm)
  • I live in EK and work in the Royal Infirmary. I'm hoping mine will be okay (possibly going under the M74 will be the worst) but that everyone else will be staying home! by TorakMcLaren (Mon 25th Oct 2021 12:30am)

  • I have to agree. Food stores, I could see an argument to be open part of the day. But there's no reason for Next workers having to start at 5am on 26th just so the sale can start at 7am. Let them enjoy the evening with their families, for goodness sake! by TorakMcLaren (Sun 26th Dec 2021 4:59pm)
  • And 1) it's probably still not enough, and 2) they still don't tend to be happy about it. There are some who'll love it, but the likelihood is there are more who are almost being forced to work and just want to be at home. by TorakMcLaren (Sun 26th Dec 2021 6:12pm)
  • East Kilbride isn't quite sure if it's been invited or not, but it came anyway, and brought Buckie. But next Friday when EK hosts the party, nobody will show up because it's too difficult to get up the hill, apparently. by TorakMcLaren (Sat 29th Jan 2022 1:31am)
  • Absolutely. There is a carpark that in theory gets locked at night, but it often doesn't. The downside is that you can have a clear night when you set off, but as soon as you leave Eaglesham you're shrouded in fog. Worth a shot though! Oh, and there's the decking area at the side of the visitor centre that's good. There may even be a small spot at the end that's a bit darker. by TorakMcLaren (Wed 20th Apr 2022 11:49pm)

  • This is true, but the question then moves to asking what is the best way to fix this? Is it by not tipping and so making it harder to employ people? How much does this hurt the people that already work there? Or is it better to boycott until better wages get paid? by TorakMcLaren (Tue 19th Jul 2022 10:20pm)

  • Lots of churches have Facebook pages as well as websites. I can only speak about what churches *should* be like. Unfortunately, not all will be. You should be made to feel welcome, there's often tea, coffee, bales, biscuits after the service. Some places might have it before the service. Services usually start around 10, 10:30, 11 on a Sunday morning, but there may be one in the evening too. Hopefully that should be clear enough from the website. If it's somewhere worth going to, there should be a few greeters on the door to welcome you. If you're not familiar with how things work, just say to them "I'm new here. Is there anyone you could introduce me to who can explain things?" It's not that people are going to be upset if you do the "wrong" thing. But places tend to get into a habit of standing/sitting for particular parts of the service (usually standing for hymns). They often have a sheet called the Order of Service that is meant to give you an idea of what's happening, but it might not be clear if you've not been to church much before. In fact, I've been going my whole life and I can get confused if I go somewhere different when on holiday! There may be some call and response section somewhere, or usually everybody says some version of The Lord's Prayer together. Depending on what denomination you go to, there might be Communion/The Lord's Supper/Eucharist. Basically, everybody gets a bit of bread (or similar) and a sip of wine/juice/something else, and it represents the Last Supper that Jesus had with His disciplines. You shouldn't feel that you are required to take part. Some places would rather a visitor who doesn't yet identify as a Christian give it a miss. I think that's the jist of what I can pass on through a single comment. But if you want to know more, feel free to ask or PM me. Depending on where you are, I might be able to direct you to somewhere that you'd find a good fit. Oh, also, if you go somewhere and don't like it, feel free to try somewhere else. Some places are more formal, some have a band rather than an organ, some are more family oriented, everywhere is different! When I moved away from home for a few years, I decided I was going to stay at the first church where someone invited me back for lunch. Happily, the minister in the first place I tried did just that :) Also, many churches now livestream services on YouTube. This might give you a bit of an idea for what it's like if you want to look somewhere up ahead of time. (Can't promise the production value will be great - we were fortunate enough to have that on the go for a few years before COVID hit, but lots of places are still getting to grips with it - but might be worth trying.) by TorakMcLaren (Tue 31st Jan 2023 11:22pm)
  • Not really. It's a collection of books written for an audience from a totally different world. There are so many cultural references in it that you're not going to pick up on or understand unless you're a scholar or somebody else explains it to you. Science is also full of things which appear at first to be direct contradictions. But the best way to learn it usually isn't to just read a book. Instead, find somebody who feels passionate about it and has spent time becoming an expert, and see what they've got to say. Many charities are run by churches *because* of their faith. Loaves and Fishes and other foodbanks, Bethany, CAP, these are all groups who feel passionately about helping those in need. As for it being a dying religion, the number of people identifying as Christians in the UK has dropped recently, but this is primarily driven by the death of people who were "nominal Christians" from a time where going to church was the done thing, rather than people of any real faith. Internationally, Christianity continues to grow. by TorakMcLaren (Tue 31st Jan 2023 11:43pm)

  • To be fair, OP did talk about drivers "bleating on about being the exception to the above." You can't be the exception if you're in the majority. That bit in particular makes it seem like OP is saying "Drivers are terrible, and if you claim you're not a terrible driver and you find it annoying too then you're a smelly liar." by TorakMcLaren (Fri 10th Feb 2023 11:26am)

  • Hmm, if by "cosy" you mean small, intimate, and not mobbed, I'd recommend the Old Hairdressers on Renfield Lane, opposite Stereo. It's easy to miss! Can't really comment on their wine, but a nice selection of beers, rums and whiskies. I'll add that there's a guy doing a gig tomorrow at 6 which is... interesting. He's a lovely guy, stage name Williwaw, and he does an electric ukulele accompaniment to black and white films. It can be a bit hit or miss for people, but you could always get a table on the balcony where you're a bit away from the regular listeners. by TorakMcLaren (Fri 7th Apr 2023 2:32pm)

  • First off, just because something is terrible, doesn't mean it's not also a beloved Glasgow institution. However, I wouldn't recommend the Blue Lagoon to anyone. It's not that it's terrible, at least not consistently. It can be really good and really bad and everything in between. But you kinda want to know what you're getting with a chippy. Plus, it just feels extortionate. I'm sure it makes a pretty penny off of tourists wanting an authentic Weegie experience who'd be far better going somewhere else and paying far less for far better. by TorakMcLaren (Wed 24th May 2023 6:55pm)

  • Boiled-egg bus guy: I was heading home from uni on the bus with a few pals (me, another guy, and two girls). There's a guy sitting across the other side of the aisle in a duffle coat, swigging a half bottle of whisky. Suddenly, he leans over to us and says (in a stereotypical slightly-creepy old man voice) "Are any of you kids good at peeling a boiled egg?" as he produces an egg from his pocket. We sort of looked at each other, mumble a "No, sorry," and he said "Oh," put the egg back in his coat and went back to his whisky. Perhaps not the most outrageous story, but it was rare to *not* encounter someone like that on the 21. by TorakMcLaren (Tue 27th Jun 2023 9:27am)
  • But, especially in Glasgow, things have gradually been twisted together so that Rangers=Protestant=Royalist and Celtic=Catholic=Republican. These connections are basically imaginary at this point, but you get loyalists whose whole identity is wrapped up in one of those "sides". I happened to be in my church's office one day when a guy popped in looking for some help. He was on his way to his Orange Lodge and wanted to make sure the Bible he'd bought from Amazon was "the proddy one an no the catholic one." There is a difference, but that just highlights how far removed they actually are from any of the claims they make. by TorakMcLaren (Sat 1st Jul 2023 11:41am)
