  • Same :) I've been looking for something like this. I haven't seen your cycling buddy post, but I could be up for it as well :) by _amanii (Wed 11th Nov 2020 11:27am)
  • I used alliexpress to buy Instax film for about £50, arrived in 2 weeks with no issues (and no custons to pay). As for allegro.pl equivalent - eBay is pretty much the same thing. by _amanii (Wed 11th Nov 2020 11:19pm)
  • I adopted from Lora's Luck. They rescue dogs from the kill lists from Romanian shelters. I live in a rented flat (you need landlord's written permission), no car, no previous dogs, no kids, no garden. They do home checks (currently online) and ask a lot of questions. For me it went quite smoothly. For my friend they were downright discouraging, but she still got the dog after all. As for lease saying no pets, it's always worth asking the landlord. I managed to get permission in 2 flats that said 'no pets' in the past. But I recently moved to Glasgow and it seemed much harder here, so I know the pain :( by _amanii (Fri 4th Dec 2020 8:54am)
  • She's doing great :) I've had her since February, and she was very timid and fearful at first, but gets more confident every day :) We just moved flats and I was worried about how she'll adjust, but she's probably had the easiest time of us all... DM me if you have any questions I can help with :) by _amanii (Sun 6th Dec 2020 10:55pm)
  • I (F) used to have a shaved head, and apart from being misgendered on a daily basis, I didn't have any negative experiences with people. I worked at a supermarket back then and it would go like this: Old man: Excuse me, son, where can I find... His wife: *elbows him and gives him a look* Old man: *realises* Oh, sorry luv, dinnae realise you're a bird! by _amanii (Sat 12th Dec 2020 9:25am)
  • I have no answer for you but oh my god, I'm in Cessnock too and I just can't understand how can there be 3 mattresses and a fridge on every fucking corner. My close is only slightly better than some stuff from that video, and the other day I wrestled a whole chicken leg from my dog's mouth... 😂 I've only lived here for 2 weeks but it looks like a lot of it is the Council's fault - bins are overflowing so that some bin bags are put beside the bins, and then the lorry doesn't take them. No recycling bin on my street, I had to drag my recycling to the metro station recycling point, which was also full, so I had to carry it back home... But yeah, no excuse for idiots dumping half of the living room on the street corner. by _amanii (Tue 15th Dec 2020 6:48pm)

  • I second this one, but if you dog is small, they can probably squeeze between the bars of the fence on one side. There's also a fenced 'dog park' in Cessnock, right next to festival Park (just a fenced off space, accessed via a gate across the Lorne Street primary school). That's where I take mine. And a similar thing in Bellahouston Park (but that one is really muddy) by _amanii (Fri 19th Mar 2021 11:48pm)
  • Lack of street sweeping. Overflowing bins are one thing, but even when they are being regularly emptied, the street is left covered with anything that fell out during emptying, any litter people dropped, cigarette buts, broken glass, etc. This is what's blocking the drain on my street - constant debris around the bins and on the street generally. You can report it and unblock it, but it will come back next time all the rubbish from the street is washed towards the drain. I don't know what it looks like in the city centre, but I'm not that far, and I haven't once seen a street sweeper (neither a person with a broom, nor the vehicle) + what people mentioned before: the recycling system is awful, and in tenements almost nonexistent by _amanii (Sat 20th Mar 2021 4:39pm)
  • In Aberdeen my recycling covered everything from plastic trays to tetra packs. And it was mixed - glass, paper, plastics, metal, all in one recycling bin. Pretty much only plastic bags/film were not recycled. It was collected every other week, alternating with general waste collection. Food waste was collected every week or so, from special vermin-proof metal bins, and every household had a food waste caddy provided. You don't need to look far for good examples. by _amanii (Tue 23rd Mar 2021 8:47pm)
  • But lot of these 'own bins' ARE on the street... This is a big source of street litter (and smell, and blocked drains). Rubbish bags are piled on the street corner beside the overflowing bins and then the seagulls/wind tear them open, and carry the stuff all over the street. Even when the bins get emptied, this stuff stays behind. by _amanii (Thu 1st Apr 2021 5:15pm)
  • There's an account on Instagram called The Glasgow Cleanup (he's also on this sub) - you tell him the time and place and he posts it on his profile so people can join you. That's how I found out about today's thing at Mount Florida (and then I saw OPs post on here). There is something every week in different parts of the city. by _amanii (Sat 3rd Apr 2021 9:35pm)
  • Jumped through the biggest hurdles in the process of buying a flat: offer accepted, mortgage accepted. We were already celebrating, only waiting for the First Home Fund money to kick in. [First Home Fund closed today](https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/first-home-fund-scottish-government-closes-applications-after-five-working-days-3194178) and I'm freaking out. We applied around 11am on the first day, so seems early enough. But there's only 2400 people or so who will get it, and who knows how many applications they got within those first 3 hours... by _amanii (Fri 9th Apr 2021 10:39am)
  • Dunno, should be next week (or maybe today?). Thanks! by _amanii (Fri 9th Apr 2021 12:24pm)
  • Congrats! :) LINK's website says that they are processing the applications in order of 'settlement date', not in order of who was first. What was your completion date? At least I was able to stop compulsively checking my email - looks like they just didn't get to my date yet :) by _amanii (Fri 9th Apr 2021 3:45pm)
  • Phew. We got it. What a relief :) by _amanii (Mon 12th Apr 2021 5:24pm)
  • Came here to say this. I am employed full time but I had a lot of the problems that OP listed (flats disappearing in hours, crazy requirements from landlords). I can honestly say that getting approved for renting was more difficult for me than getting approved for mortgage a few months later 🙄🙄 I got my first flat in Scotland via advertising on a local vegan group on Facebook. Then I found another flat through the same group a few years later! Definitely try finding a group of people looking for a flatmate - try local facebook groups centered around your interests. This also helps you find flatmates who you actually like and have something in common with :) by _amanii (Tue 13th Apr 2021 2:13pm)
  • Literally every picker I used fell apart after 15 mins or so. I stopped buying them - it's just generating more plastic waste. I'd definitely avoid the pickers from Poundland and other cheapo ones. I now pick with just a good pair of gloves, but it's annoying because I can't reach a lot of stuff. by _amanii (Fri 23rd Apr 2021 9:12am)
  • With gyms and pools now open, does anyone know where I can buy a single pass to go for a swim? I'm not a member of Glasgow Club, and sadly they are not taking any new members at the moment. I checked Village Gym but they also don't do single passes. Any ideas? by _amanii (Tue 27th Apr 2021 1:10pm)
  • Non-fiction: One I can definitely recommend is "Glasgow Tenement: A way of life" by Frank Worsdall. Difficult to get, for some reason I couldn't find it in Glasgow libraries. It's really good if you like history and architecture combined + a bit of social studies. There's some architectural jargon, but all explained. Overall gives you a good picture of how people lived throughout the years. I'm just finishing "Glasgow: an autobiography" by Alan Taylor. It's OK, but a little chaotic and - for me - difficult to follow. It's a collection of fragments taken from other books, newspaper articles, poems etc., each fragment gets a title and a foreword by Taylor. The annoying thing is that some of them are very short (half a page intro + half a page fragment), while others are a few pages long. So for me it's hard to get into the book because I get distracted by the chaotic rhythm of it. The fragments themselves are a mixed bag, some quite interesting or funny, some boring. I really wish he included a content warning before one of the chapters describing a terrifying sexual assault, or at least not give it a cutesy jokey title for fucks sake... Overall, not the best book I've ever read, but it can point you towards other things to read, and give you some interesting facts about Glasgow. by _amanii (Wed 28th Apr 2021 5:43pm)
  • I went at lunchtime. No queue, and also I bumped into Nicola Sturgeon 😂 There were more people campaigning outside than voters in the building. by _amanii (Thu 6th May 2021 2:47pm)
  • I've been using cycling as a way of commuting/getting about for over a decade, so I'm no stranger to cycling. I got an electric bike about 2 years ago and it is GREAT. I'm young and healthy and still use my regular bike a lot. But getting the electric definitely helped me cycle more. I'm using it less now that I'm working from home, but before that, for my 30 min cycle one way every day, there was nothing better. Hills? Doesn't matter. Front wind? Sure. Heavy shopping in a crate at the back? Makes no difference. It 100% made me chose to cycle on days where I would normally give up and take a bus. And you can carry 20kg of groceries uphill with similar amount of effort as riding a regular bike on a flat road. But the best thing about it is starting after waiting at a red light. No more thinking about lowering gears when you approach, or guessing if you're gonna make it. No more holding up cars behind you and worrying about the wrath of drivers 😉. It turns green and you just... go. It doesn't really make my journey shorter (I cycle with about the same speed on a regular bike), but soooo much less stressful. It's not true that you have to spend at least a couple grand. I got mine for just over 1k and it's amazing (Momentum model T). The only thing I'd change would be the brakes - definitely get one with disc brakes, because I'm going through brake pads like crazy with the rim brakes, and they are not as effective when it's raining (which is often 😂). by _amanii (Mon 10th May 2021 11:46pm)
  • It really annoys me that as a local resident completely oblivious to football and not interested in it at all, I still have to arrange my whole life around it 🙄 Does anyone know what time the march is planned for? by _amanii (Fri 14th May 2021 8:30pm)
  • 'Bike for good' are great. There's one at west end and one in Govanhill. Cheap repairs too. by _amanii (Fri 14th May 2021 10:19pm)
  • Just looked out the window to see if it calmed down and saw a guy pissing on the street 😂😂 So no 😅 Good luck with the move, not the best day for it by _amanii (Sat 15th May 2021 3:18pm)
  • I'm the same, I can make myself cry just thinking about it (and I already did a few days ago, I don't even have an appointmebt yet). *Rationally* I *know* that it doesn't hurt, but my brain makes me absolutely freak out. Last time I was going to be injected with something, I got a full blown panic attack in the waiting room, to the point that people waiting next to me got up and informed the reception, and the doctors had to sit me down for 10 mins until I started breathing normally. On the other hand, I had several tattoo sessions, including two 7h ones, and I was absolutely fine, close to falling asleep. So I really don't know how this works 😁 I just want to get it over with... by _amanii (Sat 15th May 2021 3:28pm)
  • Flying duck is amazing! And right next to Buchanan Station, if you're arriving by bus. I don't think it's open yet though :( by _amanii (Mon 17th May 2021 10:48am)
  • Locavore on Victoria Road is quite large and has a good selection, even spices. I also like The Good Choice in Mount Florida, but it's much smaller. by _amanii (Mon 14th Jun 2021 11:52pm)
