  • We have mains powered smoke and heat detectors/alarms too. They have batteries in them as a back-up if there’s a fault on the main power supply. Do you have more than one? If yes, are the others sounding? Check the consumer unit hasn’t tripped on that circuit. Whether they twist off, or slide off, there will be a catch you need to release. These aren’t always easy to access or use. You may need a flat bladed screwdriver. by reddituser35791268 (Sat 30th May 2020 6:28pm)

  • General advice when buying anywhere. Spend time there at different times during the day/evening/night. Walk around the area the house is in, get a feel for the area. Does it feel safe to you. How long would you plan to be there? Will you be having children and what school would they go to? Look at car, buildings & contents insurance quotes. The property market isn’t busy at the moment, don’t let the estate agents try and tell you “there’s been a lot of interest”, “this is a perfect time to buy” etc. Remember, they get paid after the sale so they will say whatever it takes to shift property. We are going into a very uncertain financial period with huge contractions in our economy predicted. https://www.express.co.uk/finance/city/1267625/uk-economy-forecast-coronavirus-uk-GDP-contraction-second-quarter-recession https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/jun/10/uk-economy-likely-to-suffer-worst-covid-19-damage-says-oecd This says a few things to me. Are you secure in your source of income? Also, house prices are likely to fall. Why not rent for a while to be sure you are ok with the area and to see what’s going to happen with prices? There are reasons why a house is cheaper, area has a huge effect. You live in an affluent area currently, I think you’ll notice a few differences in ‘Chateau Lait’. (Only place I’ve ever had kids throwing rocks at me while cycling - on the B766). • Drying clothes indoors without decent heat and/or ventilation is inherently problematic. All that moisture has got to go somewhere. If you don’t remove the water from your home you will get damp places which can lead to mould with associated health risks. Your options include - access to a drying green, wash your clothes at home but tumble dry elsewhere (we have a local garage with outdoor washers & dryers available 24/7), fit an extraction fan/use a dehumidifier, buy a condensing tumble dryer (a couple currently on Glasgow gumtree at £60). by reddituser35791268 (Tue 7th Jul 2020 11:58am)
  • That’s why we went for a condensing tumble dryer for use on days when we can’t hang washing outside. It’s surprising just how much water is extracted from damp clothes that would otherwise go into the house. by reddituser35791268 (Tue 7th Jul 2020 12:33pm)

  • I ignored the option of a vented tumble dryer because OP said they have windows that only open a little. Of course if they can core a hole or tie into their kitchen/bathroom extraction system that’s another matter. by reddituser35791268 (Tue 7th Jul 2020 6:21pm)
  • Yes, exactly that. Apologies if any ambiguity on my part. We also have a pulley clothes dryer in the house but definitely have to put the extractor on to stop the room getting ‘fusty’. by reddituser35791268 (Tue 7th Jul 2020 8:07pm)

  • Ok. Do you have children/planning them. Do you anticipate being in this planned house long enough for them to go through school? Those questions may direct you to catchment areas for your preferred schools. Does your work require you to be in a certain area? Do you want to be in an particular county? Do you have a car or are you dependant on public transport? Etc. We moved to Clarkston for the schools. This meant the house was more expensive but also prices are maybe less volatile. There are good local shops, parks, transport connections, virgin fibre, low crime, etc. Housing density is low with most houses having decent gardens. • I was at Rouken Glen park this morning. Some twat was skating on the pond and families were walking on the ice. You just can’t stop stupid. A member of East Ren parks told me it’s about 5 ft deep in the middle, so any one going through the ice might have some difficulty getting out. I heard an ambulance had to be called yesterday for a woman who injured herself falling through the ice. A few days ago a fire & rescue service tender came to the park while I was there because a youth thought it would be smart to walk out to one of the islands on the pond. I’m pretty sure the emergency services have better things to do than rescue & treat idiots who think walking on ice an ‘Instagram famous’ activity. by reddituser35791268 (Wed 6th Jan 2021 10:37pm)
  • Queen’s Park pond is smaller and shallow so freezes over more rapidly and completely. If you went through the ice there you could easily walk out. Rouken Glen pond is significantly wider and deeper, so takes far longer to freeze over to a safe thickness. Yesterday, while there were people on it, it wasn’t completely frozen over. You go through that and you may well have difficulty getting out. As I said, a woman went through the ice the day before yesterday and required an ambulance because of her injury. by reddituser35791268 (Thu 7th Jan 2021 10:34am)

  • Knocking down a wall in a tenement building needs to be carried out with consideration of several factors: Building Insurance. Supporting walls for neighbours. Structural engineer design/calculations for any reinforcement. Council building standards approval. The bathroom will need services and extraction to remove moist air to outside the building. • I used to have an 1898 tenement flat. It was ground floor at the front but set on a hillside so effectively first floor at the back - so much less likely to be broken into. I owned the wee garden in front so got railings installed - this and lots of holly, roses, berberis and pyracantha I planted kept anyone from being able to get up to the windows. Decent double glazing will keep the external noise levels down. The fashion at the time I had my flat was for everyone to sand & varnish their floorboards. This meant a lot of noise from upstairs. by reddituser35791268 (Mon 1st Mar 2021 8:18pm)

Don’t let the current state of the place put you off. They were arseholes for not making an effort to sort things before you moved in - when I sold, I scrubbed my tenement flat, left lots of notes about bin days, stair cleaning, etc and a bottle of champagne to welcome the new owners to their home. • Guessing you own the property, in which case you can do what you want. Googling will show you have various options (foam/fibre boards etc) but some good advice I’ve read is to decouple whatever you put in from the wall, ie don’t attach your sound deadening directly to the wall the noise is coming through and build a frame attached to the floor, ceiling and adjacent walls. Tenements can be very noisy, the trend for sanded floorboards and no carpets doesn’t help. by reddituser35791268 (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 9:58am)

Not sure what they might be able/want to do but this type of situation creates a lot of bad publicity for them. Local paper? “My life made a misery by drunken Airbnb revellers”. Get people you know to write bad reviews? No idea if you can write a review without staying there. Does everyone else in the close feel the same way? You could always create ‘inconveniences’ for the visitors. Might seem petty but if they are causing you lots of problems, a few bad reviews will reduce bookings. by reddituser35791268 (Wed 13th Oct 2021 10:13pm)

  • I also wondered if anyone else was getting power from OP. I’d turn everything off and watch the meter. by reddituser35791268 (Fri 18th Feb 2022 2:00pm)
  • Do you have access to your consumer unit, or a mains isolation switch before it? If you can get to the isolation switch, turn power off there. Any cables coming out of it should go to your consumer unit. If you can’t get to the isolation switch, kill the power at the consumer unit. Individual switches (RCDs and MCBs) should be labelled and can be used to knock out power to various circuits - lighting, power sockets, water heater, cooker etc. Any cables from the meter that don’t go to your isolation switch, or cables from the isolation switch that don’t go to your consumer unit should be investigated. If you kill the power at the isolation switch or by knocking off all the RCBs or MCBs and the meter is still turning then you are supplying someone else. It’s also possible for you to be supplying someone else from your consumer unit. It will be a little harder to trace this. Start by turning off all your appliances/lights/heating etc at the item and with the MCBs energised. Again observe the meter. If it’s moving then power is being drawn somewhere. You may need to check you’ve got everything off in your flat. If you have all your powered items off and the meter is still moving, start knocking off the MCBs one at a time and observe which one(s) cause the meter to stop. That will tell you which circuit the power is being drawn from. Hope that makes some sense. A stud detector may find it hard to find a joist because of any deafening boards & materials etc. It will help if you can work out which orientation the ceiling joists run - it will be 90 degrees off the orientation of the original floorboards if you can see them. Any fixings on the floorboards will help you work out the joist spacing - often 16” but can vary. Be very careful making holes in your ceiling - you may drill into gas/water/central heating/electrical cables etc. A multi detector can help but I’d not assume they are infallible. by reddituser35791268 (Sat 3rd Sep 2022 9:54pm)
  • I suspect the suggestion was because the mounting holes on your screen will probably not match the joist position/dimensions. Attaching a board to a joist then gives you something firm to mount the screen on. by reddituser35791268 (Sun 4th Sep 2022 11:02am)
