  • 32 year old female here. I split my time between here and London, my partner is based here so I stay here for him the majority of the time. Don't know anyone except for his relatives, it's weird going from super sociable to a loner. We've got 2 cats, they're pretty much my BFF. I love movies too, currently on a neo noir binge. Gonna watch The Grifters next. Where are you studying? My partner is a lecturer in town. by 1gsb8 (Wed 4th Nov 2020 2:30am)

  • Cheers for this. It's so difficult to know how he likes it when he articulates it as "mince". by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 10:42pm)
  • What's the gravy though? I'd do mirepoix with red wine, beef stock, tomato puree and Worcestershire sauce. Is that too fancy? It's doing my head in, I just wish I'd asked her how she did it. by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 10:41pm)
  • He used to visit his cousin's nan after school sometimes as she always had it on the go, then gi back to his home for second dinner. Thanks for these, like the look of them. by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 10:49pm)
  • Been asking for ages if he had veg in it, or gravy granules but he doesn't know. He was so spoilt by her, she did everything she could to keep him happy and he didn't get involved. Lazy but grateful boy. by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 10:47pm)
  • That's how it appears to me, too. He never had cottage pie growing up so he can't say that's how she did it. Reckon I'll just bite the bullet and try it, just don't want to break his little heart with never having his favourite meal cooked properly. by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 10:45pm)
  • Thanks for this, its pretty much how I do cottage pie minus the red wine, beef stock and tomato puree. Oxo or Bisto in your opinion? by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 10:50pm)
  • His mum used to dice stuff so small so his dad wouldn't notice, he was so fussy. And my partner's a gannet, barely looks at his plate- just shoves it in his gob. by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 10:55pm)
  • For me it was leek and potato soup or soda bread with butter. Really don't want to bugger it up, everyone deserves to have a treat that takes them back to when his parents were alive and everything was perfect. It's such a simple dish but there's just so many variations and it's so easy to get it wrong with just one ingredient. Plus it seems you lot up here take your mince and tatties seriously, it's a hell of a dilemma! by 1gsb8 (Mon 16th Nov 2020 11:09pm)
  • Just saw his website and he's selling prints on [etsy](https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/907626851/kelvingrove-gallery-limited-edition?ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1). Incredible well priced considering the standard. I'd buy if I had a place for it, but I'll be keeping an eye on other things. I'd also like to recommend [Darren Cullen](https://www.spellingmistakescostlives.com/). Completely different, but he's another brilliant UK artist. by 1gsb8 (Thu 19th Nov 2020 10:40pm)
  • Don't know, it shows GBP for me. At the very bottom of the page you can change it from USD to GBP, just below the social media links for etsy. by 1gsb8 (Fri 20th Nov 2020 12:07am)

  • What? by 1gsb8 (Sat 28th Nov 2020 2:02am)
  • Think it's because of difficulty laying electrical signalling in the hugely outdated tunnels. Installation whilst also maintaining the current required control equipment to keep services rolling just makes rollout that much more difficult. It'd be easier if they just closed the subway for a period of time, a bit like what they do for the tube in London. Also doesn't help that it's a closed circle line. This is a simulated version of the schematic but [you can see](http://sim.bemined.nl/w/images/8/8e/CVL_Glasgow.png) that there aren't holding or diversion junction routes available. Having to work on downtime and have everything perfect for the first departure is ridiculously hard going on engineers. by 1gsb8 (Wed 2nd Dec 2020 11:40pm)
  • Unlike the tube, it pretty much is as it shows on the stops guide. So simple in design but that's problematic and archaic. Forward planning is something that was a huge part when I studied hydraulic/pneumatic systems, guess it's cos of things like this. by 1gsb8 (Thu 3rd Dec 2020 2:45am)
  • You're right about Bezos, but the kind of software used hasn't been ascertained by forensic examinations. Expecting a scammer who preys upon average people in Glasgow to have access to the kind of attack employed by intelligence agencies is far fetched at the very least. You'd have to have granted permission with something like a trojan horse image, a web link or media with malevolent code. If your WhatsApp account has possibly been hacked, you could check via app logins to check. Or make sure your phone's framework is up to date, don't share WiFi, don't autosave multimedia, take precautionary measures by keeping up to date with scams (eg don't contact strangers just cos you're on a promise). ETA the exploit wasn't with WhatsApp, it's Apple. Apple OS is very secure, but not very smart once it has been penetrated. Because they don't discuss how they approach security, there aren't many trustworthy apps you can use to check if you're phone has been compromised. It's stupid. by 1gsb8 (Mon 5th Apr 2021 11:15pm)
  • Kerf width is the width of the material removed during the cutting process. You will always end up with material removed when cutting. For example, you cut a 1m length of wood. You measure after cutting, and it's measuring 0.99m, the kerf width is 0.01m. Different blades have different kerfs. by 1gsb8 (Tue 6th Apr 2021 8:21pm)
  • If all of your measurements are the same for the supports, losing a couple of mm won't really matter depending on the joint used. If the posts are the same width along the length, it's likely fine. Tolerances of a couple of mm for an amateur project are fine, you can fix gaps in joints like mortises with wood glue and sawdust so don't discard of it as you work. by 1gsb8 (Wed 7th Apr 2021 1:21pm)
  • https://glasgowhomeless.wordpress.com/2018/08/31/food/#more-16 This may help. I'm sorry I cannot offer the use of mine, currently shielding due to poor health. If you're stuck for money to pay for hygiene, I can help with that. Just let me know. by 1gsb8 (Fri 9th Apr 2021 12:07am)
  • Government guidelines are still for under 40s to receive Pfizer or Moderna. The day of my vaccination was when the guidelines were introduced, I was meant to receive AZ and almost got turned away. Luckily, they had the resources to give me Pfizer. Because of the Indian variant, the committee is considering relaxing these guidelines so you may find that it changes before you receive yours or, like me, on the day you turn up. It may not happen, but it depends on resources available and the threat of the virus in the area. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 6:06am)
  • You may be waiting a long time, in that case, as supplies are inconsistent with the vulnerable being prioritised. Pfizer is around 95% efficacy, AZ is around 85%. I would've taken the AZ if I were allowed as I think the risk of death, organ failure or long term illness is best prevented with anything available - I just got lucky that Pfizer was being offered for second doses that day. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 8:23am)
  • It's your choice, it's just reckless to risk the lives of others over a preference. The risk of blood clots is higher from a Covid-19 infection, between 10-30% of those hospitalised will have serious clotting issues. 0.00001% of those who get the AZ vaccine may get a clotting issue. The benefits of the AZ vaccine clearly outweigh the risks by a huge amount, and 85% protection obviously outweighs 0%. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 8:42am)
  • It is a preference. We are fortunate to be offered any vaccine at all. The risk is minimal, 1 in 100000. 4 in a million, in the UK get clots after the AZ vaccine. The benefit to yourself and to society is being vaccinated, and not choosing to wait until your preference is available, putting lives at risk in the meanwhile. Decisions like that are why people have lost their lives, loved ones, had to isolate for over a year. Just get whichever vaccine is offered, delaying it is stupid and dangerous. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 8:53am)
  • I'm not sure what you mean about age. I did also say it's your choice, but that doesn't make it not stupid to choose to be unprotected. I also didn't ask for Pfizer, I asked for anything just so I could be vaccinated instead of leaving without one, and got lucky that another type was being given at the centre that day. I didn't have a preference, I felt being vaccinated with anything is better than going without. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 9:15am)
  • I think you're looking at studies where different size dosages are offered. One study puts it at over 90% effective, with a low followed by standard dose. The studies are inconsistent as they keep changing the background and methods used, that's why using the generally accepted statistics is easiest otherwise I'd be amending the figure given daily. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 9:23am)
  • Just because you're younger than the typical age of covid death cases does not mean it won't happen. You're around 10 times more likely to have a CVT than vaccine if you're around 30 years old. Cool, I just hope you isolate yourself while you wait indefinitely so you don't contribute to deaths in the community. And you're right, I haven't taken any risks. I've isolated myself since March last year just so I wasn't exposed to the virus and killed by people taking risks or not following the law when testing positive. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 9:32am)
  • I read a study the other day that around 20 healthcare workers in a Mumbai hospital vaccinated with AZ did test positive for infection, but none showed symptoms at all. Can't recall where I read the study, likely the Lancet. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 9:42am)
  • No, I rather intended the opposite - that the vaccine has been a success in those cases. by 1gsb8 (Wed 19th May 2021 2:36pm)
  • Crosshill is nice, especially closer to Queens Park. You're right next to the heart of the southside, lots of nice places eat and drink, some nice independent shops. I'd probably try and stay away from Hampden just because of football and the area being busy, but there's still nice parts of that area too. You are within walking distance of Pollokshields, Pollokshaws, Shawlands and Langside. I'd personally stay away from Govanhill as I just don't like the feel there, but you may find it fine. The whole area is quickly being gentrified so it'll change in a few months again. Have a look on Rightmove or Zoopla for those areas with a smaller radius search area, and you'll see what's on offer for your money. Main issues to look out for if you move into an old tenement are noise, damp/mould, and pests. Parking can be an issue where we stay in Pollokshields, so maybe bear that in mind if you like having your car visible from your window. by 1gsb8 (Fri 2nd Jul 2021 4:07pm)
  • Just as an FYI, those places are walking distance. I know you said 20 mins by bus or train, but buses are somewhat unreliable. Taking a train widens up your search area significantly, but anywhere on the Cathcart circle is roughly within that distance (Neilston to Crosshill is about 20 ish minutes). Still, no point going so far out to save money if you then spend that on a travel card. May as well stay somewhere a bit nicer and walk to work. by 1gsb8 (Fri 2nd Jul 2021 4:24pm)
  • I'm staying in the southside with my partner. I'm originally from near London, so have no friends at all up here - I tend to split my time between here and London evenly. I'm 33 years old, female. Have to rely on him for all social things up here, havent really established myself as an individual as of yet despite it being 6 years now. I'm a proper Billy no mates, it seems. Would be up for chatting but currently avoiding the outdoors when unnecessary as I've got kidney disease and don't want to be exposed despite being vaccinated. Would be willing to meet for a coffee or a walk when things stabilise and the risk of infection is less of a worry. by 1gsb8 (Sun 25th Jul 2021 2:12am)
  • About 3 weeks, sooner if possible. Sadly, I dont have Facebook so that's not an option. Would love for it to go to a charity that sets up homes for people in need, I'm just not familiar with anything in the Southside area. by 1gsb8 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 10:57pm)
  • Charging is fine, just wondering if there's a cheaper option than renting a box van for a couple of days/our time taken to move it all. Really not expecting this much work to cost nothing rather just less than £500. by 1gsb8 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 11:01pm)
  • Thank you for this. Will send a message tomorrow to get a quote. by 1gsb8 (Wed 6th Oct 2021 11:07pm)

  • If money is an issue, maybe you could create an Amazon wishlist with a blender like [this one](https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00DGLUW4E/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_5863JDENBZ41MX8AX6GC) so that I can buy you it. Then you can just buy ingredients and make drinks tailored to your mum's tastes. Sorry if the offer is insulting, it's just something I went through when my nan first had dementia and my mum had cancer so it breaks my heart when loved ones suffer unnecessarily. Hope things get better for you and your family. by 1gsb8 (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 3:11am)
  • Is there a Dishoom in Scotland? Used to love it in London and haven't been in a few years. First place I tried Thums Up. by 1gsb8 (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 9:39pm)
  • That's a shame, temporarily in Ayrshire with rural public transport and don't like driving there. May as well just go when I'm in London next. Dunno why they chose Edinburgh and not Glasgow, weird. by 1gsb8 (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 10:18pm)
  • Crikey, Dishoom's one is pricey considering I'm doing the dishes after. May just get the recipe book instead. Cheers for the heads up. by 1gsb8 (Sun 23rd Jan 2022 10:25pm)
  • It's absolutely mental inside. You're greeted by this big monitor screen over the stairs, which was showing an aquarium when we went last. I enjoyed the food. It was relaxed and easy dining, run efficiently. The food isn't entirely traditional Italian but who cares when the menu is large enough for everyone. Price was average, not cheap and not over the top so a decent midway point for most people. by 1gsb8 (Tue 1st Feb 2022 12:25pm)
  • You need a vehicle to enter dumps. Otherwise you could organise a bulk uplift or check the council's [map of bins](https://glasgowgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=345f389a91ff4f1fa193b24df832fb05) by 1gsb8 (Mon 11th Jul 2022 8:10pm)
  • The wine list is very good, but I've never had a meal there that warranted the price. The food menu reads well, however game/poultry is always over done and the steaks are just average compared to Tiffneys, Butchershop, McMillans or even a chain like Miller and Carter. Even the service is inattentive a lot of the time. Dunno why it's so hyped up - must be down to the fantastic decor. Really confuses me to see it strongly recommended. by 1gsb8 (Sat 16th Jul 2022 3:29am)

  • All the [news](https://pitchfork.com/news/arcade-fires-win-butler-accused-of-sexual-misconduct-by-multiple-women-frontman-responds/) about Win Butler recently may change the atmosphere. I'd presume people may not want to support someone amidst the allegations and his weak response of having "lost his way". by 1gsb8 (Sat 3rd Sep 2022 11:46pm)

  • But, you're missing the point here, poor people are nice, salt of the earth types. You simply cannot have a pleasant conversation nor find any common ground with someone once you have been made aware that their home exceeds an arbitrary amount of money, they just become dickheads once their net worth passes that arbitrary threshold amount. Despite that arbitrary amount being what others in the southeast would consider a modest amount for a property and not really much to brag about in the grand scheme of things, they're just being uppity now with their social mobility by rubbing the OPs nose in it by having him deliver outside of the far more personable schemes where it's the aesthetic is much more romantic. by 1gsb8 (Fri 20th Jan 2023 3:31pm)
  • Just try and make sure you hide that look of despair and disgust better in the future, at the very least. Or maybe sell up and give away everything, and rent a coal store in a tenement in Port Glasgow (one of the ones with no doors or windows) if you're truly committed to being an affable person. by 1gsb8 (Fri 20th Jan 2023 4:18pm)
