  • As long as you've no developed a west end accent I think you're alright by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 23rd May 2022 6:00pm)
  • I would say it's almost a sort of Americanised form of a Scottish accent, the more English-influenced posh accent is quite old fashioned now, unless you're from Edinburgh or further north in my experience. Lots of non-reticulated "r" sounds and frequent, unnecessary use of "like" which even I'm guilty of by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 24th May 2022 3:09am)
  • By the way, I'm very interested by the prospect of this documentary. Is it focussing solely on Glasgow or cities in general? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 25th May 2022 4:39pm)
  • In the north of the city, some of the bits along the Kelvin still feel pretty wild, even in more groomed areas like the Botanic Gardens and stuff, but as you follow the river north up to Blackhill it almost feels like the countryside. Ruchill golf course and it's wooded surrounds have essentially been left for nature to reclaim, seen hunners of deer, rabbits, foxes, owls etc. hanging around over there and it's my go-to spot when I need to go for a nature walk since it's really close by - during the pandemic the gate was either open or at least unlocked the majority of the time, but it seems like recently they've actually been locking it up again, but there's another gate down the road a bit which is a doddle to climb over. Further up the canal, you've got abandoned railway tunnels just off the path that are beset on both sides by decades of untamed overgrowth, as well as Dawsholm Park which has highland coos and that. Most of the land in the city has been interfered with at one point or another, so for the most part, "natural" or "wild" areas are ones that have been long abandoned, rather than never touched to begin with. Edit: if you're brave enough to venture south, to Castlemilk, the Cathkin Braes are literally right there, been meaning to go for a stoat up that way for a wee while now but it's a bit of a trek for me. Same goes for the Campsies in the north; beautiful to look at from afar but a tad inaccessible if you don't have a car. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 25th May 2022 4:36pm)
  • That one isn't open yet, despite having been finished for a while now, as you mentioned. It's been shite having the canal closed off for so long, took it for granted before. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 12:06am)
  • Fred sounds like a pure legend, throw him a bit of your piece on my behalf next time you see him. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 3:29am)
  • Ah yes, because everyone in Glasgow famously lives and works within the square mile and a half that comprises the city centre. What a ridiculous premise, and even moreso to follow it up by claiming that anyone who says otherwise is being lazy and disingenuous. Get tae fuck. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 4:00am)
  • I'm from Maryhill, and I'm a pretty inexperienced cyclist. For me to go anywhere on a bike, it requires me to cycle either on or across a busy arterial road to even get anywhere near an actual marked cycle path, which is terrifying for someone who's not quite sure of themselves and not entirely capable of keeping up with motor vehicles - especially someone who doesn't like to inconvenience other commuters. It also means that on my return journey, coming from literally anywhere else in Glasgow, I'm cycling back up an increasingly steep fucking hill, until I get to my bit which is bad enough to even walk up, let alone cycle. Glasgow, in the north, particularly, is hilly as fuck and long, steady inclines count just as much as sharp steep ones. You being able to confidently cycle along flat arsed Paisley Road from the post-industrial, low-lying sprawl of the east end does not negate everycunt else's miserable, mountainous bike route, mate. I haven't ever cycled across the city because the topography and infrastructure are so cycle-unfriendly that I haven't had a chance to get good enough to feel comfortable doing so and not having to worry about lugging the bike back up a 70° incline, on foot, after already puffing myself out getting to the base of said incline. The canal tow path is about the closest to an acceptable cycle route in my neck of the woods, and a good chunk of it's closed off and has been for a year and change - not to mention that there's plenty of sharp turns with fuck all railings all the way along it, which again, is not a welcoming prospect for somebody who isn't a confident cyclist. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 10:22am)
  • Sadly, the big Maryhill Tesco no longer stays open 24/7. They've been closing at 11pm for a while now, despite initially opening until 12 when lockdown first hit, iirc. Weird that they've reduced that by another hour now that things are kinda back to normal. They still keep the whole shop floor lit up like the Blackpool Illuminations all night long though, as do most places from what I can tell. How do they afford the lecky?? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 10:56am)
  • I suppose most people go into town to do their shopping at the weekend, which means they often end up mobbed. I would dig it if they opened and closed later on weekdays to accommodate for people who would prefer to do a bit of shopping after work. Open at noon, close at 10pm, instead of opening at 8am and closing at 6. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 11:01am)
  • I do agree that we would be better off with the German model, a 4 day work week would be a godsend - however, isn't wasting your whole day pretty much standard for the majority of workers? I'd rather have a long lie and get home late than be up at 6am and then have to fight your way home in the middle of rush hour, especially when it's pitch black both going in and coming back from work during the winter months. I am not a morning person though so I can't expect an entire city to revolve around my out-of-whack internal clock. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 11:18am)
  • This is why I stopped using Reddit lol, self-righteous dickheads that would rather be right than actually listen to another human being and take their experience into consideration. If you'd read my comment properly you would understand that it's not for lack of trying that I haven't managed to become a regular cyclist, but fuck it, you're clearly a wanker anyway so I'm done arguing with you. Peace out, fannybaws. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 4:08pm)
  • Maybe they could alternate? Monday 9 to 5, Tuesday 12 to 10, etc. and then open the usual weekend times Saturday and Sunday? I understand that nightshift workers don't want to be inconvenienced, having been one myself (I was working at a nightclub, finishing work at 4 or 5am most days so I was unable to do any shopping on the way home, meaning I had to do it before I went out to work, which was gash) but unfortunately the current set up is inconveniencing the vast majority of day shift workers, so it's kind of fucked either way, hence why I say maybe alternating is the best shout. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 4:51pm)
  • I dunno, you'll need to ask our brutal, chuggin' mollusc friend over here. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 26th May 2022 5:38pm)
  • Record Fayre on one of the streets off the Trongate has decent stuff, vinyls and CD's in the front, clothing and accessories in the back. Got a bit of a grimy, old school feel, but I dig it. It's right next to the Nirvana piercing studio and A1 Comics is on the street that runs perpendicular to it, south of the Tron - the ultimate trifecta of goff necessities. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 31st May 2022 5:53pm)

  • There is a fence around the complex but there are plenty of gaps you can get through, and there was no security presence the day I was there. Just be careful, some of the structure itself could probably be considered unsafe - the floors of the suspended galleries surrounding the big main auditorium are made from some weird porous material with an uncomfortable amount of give, and which was making unsettling creaking noises when stood upon. I wouldn't fancy falling through that shit to the concrete floor below. Interestingly enough, those bits used to be the actual lodgings for the students of the seminary, but now the whole building is just a big concrete skeleton so it's hard to imagine. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 31st May 2022 7:09pm)
  • Aye, the surrounding area and the walk up from Cardross is lovely even if you can't get into the actual building but it seems like they've given up on restricting public access, maybe because they restored it to a safer state for the shows they were holding there and that. I was there for a (technically illegal but cool as fuck) improv gig/rave/performance show thing that was on in September last year, the organisers managed to get all the necessary equipment in and a good amount of folk turned up to watch so I reckon OP should be able to get in no bother. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 31st May 2022 9:05pm)

  • Somecunt's scrawled the word "phobia" all over my end of Ruchill. Either the council's trying to do some mad MK-Ultra-esque demoralisation shit, or the young teams have started to adopt weirdly ominous menchies. Dunno which is more frightening. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 8:45pm)
  • Aye, the working class and cultural diffusion elements obviously had a huge role to play, I touched on that briefly but should probably have clarified that I already assumed that was one of the main factors - the industrial nature of Glasgow kind of speaks for itself in that regard. In terms of Glasgow being "cooler", I definitely think there is an element of civic narcissism in this city, but as you say, it's not entirely unfounded - this city is a bit of an underdog and it's people are proud of how down to earth they are, to the point of being kind of egotistical about it in some ways, at times, anyway. Again, all from my personal observations, having been here my entire life. Not saying it's a universal truth for everybody here but it's an attitude I've noticed quite a lot. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 9:43pm)
  • The first half of your comment is thoroughly interesting and enlightening, the second half is totally misguided. I'm not talking about upper class accents, I'm talking about normal, working Glasgow accents being pretty much devoid of authentic Scots terminology, instead just being a heavily accented version of standard English with some uniquely Glaswegian slang thrown in. Posh upper class folk tend to speak with the ubiquitous, Americanised "uni accent" nowadays, whereas Edinburgh toffs still seem to sound like Scottish presenters on the BBC from the mid-20th century - received pronunciation but with a slight Scottish twang. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 9:48pm)
  • Good job misunderstanding the entire post, friend. I know the Glesga accent is just as strong and commonplace as ever, that's got fuck all to do with what I'm on about. Does every Reddit post over a certain length need a TLDR for folk to bother with getting the actual gist of it's contents? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 11:16pm)
  • Right, listen everybody, the main point of this post is as follows: does anybody know why more traditional Scots words and phrases have been retained in the dialects of Edinburgh and most of the rest of Scotland, but have largely disappeared from Glaswegian speech? Like, we still say daft shit like "oaksters" instead of "armpits" and that, but from my personal experience there's way less of that kind of thing in glaswegians speech than everywhere else. That's all I'm asking. I specifically stated in the first line that this isn't talking about the posh "uni accent", nor am I claiming that Glaswegian is becoming more Anglicised in recent years; I'm saying it already has less ties to traditional Scots than everywhere else - using Edinburgh in particular as an example, being that it's the city I'm most familiar with, outwith Glasgow - and that I would like to find out why exactly that might be the case. This is about dialects, not accents. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 11:25pm)
  • Oh aye, because history has absolutely no effect on the present, least of all the integration of different groups of people into one culture. Accents just appear out of the blue one day and stay that way forever. I might sound pretentious, but you sound fucking thick. Why are you being so hostile, anyway? All I wanted was to have a conversation about a pattern I've observed, and not many people I know IRL are interested/knowledgeable on the subject. There's no need to be acting like a hard man to an inquisitive stranger on Reddit, mate, it's pretty sad. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 11:48pm)
  • Sorry, should have titled it "Why Don't Glesga Cunts Talk The Same Way As Other Scottish Cunts?". Would that have helped you comprehend it a bit better? I ask again, why are you being such a cunt for no apparent reason? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 11:50pm)
  • No dude, you're still not understanding my question. I've spoken to thousands of Glaswegians and barely any of them use Scots words, as in, the actual Scots language, not just a thicker Scottish accent. Folk I've spoken to from other places in Scotland have used Scots words way more commonly than Glaswegians, and while I understand that that's anecdotal evidence, I've lived here my whole life so it's not like I don't have a significant enough sample size to determine that it's more than just "my bubble". I'm from Maryhill. Most people I know in real life have really strong Glaswegian accents. Most of them barely use any Scots words or phrases. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 14th Jun 2022 11:56pm)
  • I referred to the Highland Clearances to point out that both Glasgow and Edinburgh had massive influxes of refugees from further north, and that that seemed to have had a more lasting impact on the Edinburgh dialect than the Glaswegian one. I'm not claiming any of these things are the sole reason for why we speak the way we do, it's a mix of all that and more. I just thought it was interesting, food for thought. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 15th Jun 2022 12:04am)
  • The Irish Famine was in the 1840's, when Glasgow was at the height of it's Imperial status, not 300 years beforehand - unless you're on about The Auld Alliance, which I admit was a bit of a stretch but somebody else in the thread has already posted a video talking about the similarities in the Glaswegian and French pronunciation of the letter "R". It was pure speculation on my part and a very minor facet of the whole post. Of course the famine had a massive influence on us, west coast Scots and Irish are basically the same people, we've been going back and forth across the Irish Sea for thousands of years at this point. All of my great-great-grandparents, bar none, were Irish. I have no doubt that Irish immigrants played a huge role in forming the Glaswegian dialect, but as I stated quite clearly in my post, I don't know that much about that part of our history, certainly not as much as I would like - and therefore, if you're such an expert on the subject, I would prefer it if you taught me something about it, rather than hurled abuse at me. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 15th Jun 2022 12:02am)
  • You're one to talk, mate. Also, where did I say I forgot the title of my post? Lol, it was you - and others, so it probably was my fault, I admit it - who misconstrued the title as meaning something other than what it was supposed to. Again, that's on me for not making it clearer. That doesn't mean it's stupid and wrong. Jesus Christ man, go have a wank or something, you sound fucking raging and I've no even done anything. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 15th Jun 2022 12:06am)
  • Phew, thank you for the apology. We clearly got off on the wrong foot but the last thing I wanted from this post was to start an argument lmao. The Liverpool connection is actually a really interesting point, and one I hadn't even considered. I probably should have clarified as well, that I reckon the "Anglicisation" of the dialect - in the case of the Irish, too, who of course have their own language also - probably has more to do with the stamping out of indigenous tongues by the imperial English, as opposed to a widespread, voluntary adoption of the English language by those subjugated peoples. The Irish influence is huge, but it's not like Glaswegian has many Irish words in the mix either. It seems to have had a bigger impact on the accent than the actual language used, which is still mostly just English, and which is the crux of this post: why Glasgow, but not Edinburgh? The English presence is even more concentrated there, but in my experience, so is the usage of the traditional Scots language, and I wonder why that might be. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 15th Jun 2022 12:15am)
  • That's fair enough. I wouldn't consider myself an intellectual either, not in a million years. I'm just fascinated by history and it's present-day consequences, and I like to write with a bit of flair - like I said in the post, I'm probably chatting shite for the most part and would love to be corrected by somebody who knows what they're on about. Anyway, I do apologise for being a snide cunt in response to your own snide cuntery, we were both a bit out of order and I accept the blame for fucking the title, and the ensuing confusion. Still though, no need for you to be speaking to folk like that to begin with, it's just a daft post on Reddit and people are having a shit enough time of it as is without being called a moron and a mentalist for trying to start an honest discussion. Calling me a mentalist was pretty fucking funny though tbh. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 15th Jun 2022 12:24am)
  • Nah, the majority of people I speak to in this city don't put on any airs and graces, least of all my family and friends - I certainly don't either, I speak with a strong Glaswegian accent and only soften it if I'm speaking to someone who might have trouble understanding me, a non-native speaker or whatever. My immediate vicinity counts as the entire city given the cosmopolitan nature of Glasgow. I've spoken to people from the south side, east end, west end, and I'm from the north. I've worked, studied, been to events etc. all over the city, and with people from all over the city, and elsewhere too of course. Accents are generally slightly different depending on where you are, I've noticed - my best pal is from the Gorbals and him and his family don't sound the exact same as me or mine - but it's still recognisably Glaswegian. I've never heard of either of your examples. What is a "bird keech" and how does one "blaw a hoolie"? I mean, "blaw" is obviously "blow" - "it's blawin' a gale oot there", but a "hoolie"? No clue. I would say your knowledge of these words would point to you being in more of a bubble than I am in regards to the usage of Scots in daily speech, or at least one of equal proportion. Are your friends or family originally from Glasgow or is there some outside influence that's helped you pick up these words? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 15th Jun 2022 12:37am)
  • If there isn't already some kind of movement to get the buses sorted out then I'd be happy to get involved in starting one. Our public transport is fucking ridiculous, except for the subway which is unfortunately very limited in scope and also inherently pretty hard to fuck up. The amount of times I've been waiting on a bus, any bus, and it just doesn't show up despite appearing on the electronic timetable up until the very last minute is so aggravating, and I've felt like saying something snarky to the driver more than once but I'm always so relieved that a bus has finally arrived after such a long wait that I'm just eager to get on and sit down with as little fuss as possible. The number 90 in particular is totally unreliable, I've noticed. Recently it seems like they've reduced or changed the times but haven't bothered to update the timetables, and half the time it doesn't even appear on the app when it is actually on the way - plus, it changes to the 189 and the 190 after a certain time and nobody I know has managed to suss out any kind of pattern to it's schedule yet, despite it having been like that for months. Sometimes the 90 still turns up an hour after it's seemingly supposed to have switched over to the 190. Doesn't make any fucking sense and I'm sick of being late to important appointments because of an incompetent and uncaring transport provider. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 18th Jun 2022 10:02am)
  • I don't mean being legitimately nasty to them, I know it's not their fault, I just meant like a cheeky "have you's changed the timetables and not told anybody mate?" Again, haven't ever done it 'cos I don't like being rude to people even in the odd case when they do deserve it, but you can't help but fantasise when you've been waiting in the rain for half an hour for a bus that doesn't show up lol. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 18th Jun 2022 5:48pm)
  • Aw aye, I'm not claiming it was a pure once in a lifetime situation, it was just handled expertly. "Peekaboo, yous two" and "ye put 30 pence in coppers in the hing" were the main points of the post lol. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 10th Jul 2022 5:42pm)
  • Never heard of it, should I take that as a compliment? Lol by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 10th Jul 2022 5:46pm)
  • Must have been vintage by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 10th Jul 2022 5:46pm)
  • You've never heard of a 60? They all go the same way up to a certain point - the 60, 60A and 61 all stop at that bus stop on Hope Street and all of them go up Maryhill Road and that, not sure where exactly they diverge. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:04am)
  • Thank you! It was really funny, a lot of folk seem to doubt the authenticity of the story or at the very least consider it not funny enough to have warranted posting it here, but everycunt on that bus knew they had just witnessed an event of great significance. Probably just had to be there. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:07am)
  • I admit, you've got me well trumped with that one. I tend to be quite lucky - or unlucky depending how you look at it - in that my bus journeys are often quietly boring, with the odd, extremely tense nutcase encounter mixed in, as opposed to anything as lighthearted as OP. The 75 is definitely one of the buses with the most potential for mentalness though. I remember I was getting on that bus at Cowcaddens with my maw when I was about 12, and a woman with her wee lassie of about 6 or 7 was getting on in front of us. Wee lassie goes, "aww mate this bus pure stinks ah hash" loud as you like, maw gives not a single fuck. It did pure reek to be fair. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:13am)
  • It was a Saturday evening and most of the passengers were pished, it was quite raucous indeed. Obviously not every single person was in audible stitches but I was just dramatising it a bit, 'cos you know, it's more fun that way innit. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:15am)
  • Never claimed it was *that* funny, but 100-odd folk seem to think it was chuckle-worthy, at least. Writing it up with a bit of creative flair just serves to make it read better imo, instead of just going "the bus driver just pure told these junkies to get aff hawhaw, bruwiant." It was legitimately memorable, if it had been caught on camera and put on YouTube it would probably end up going at least semi-viral. I am Glaswegian by the way, born and bred. I've noticed that oftentimes, when somebody dislikes a post on this sub, they immediately assume the OP is some foreign transplant who's still getting used to the Glasgow patter. It is possible to still have an appreciation for the sights and sounds this city offers, even if you've lived here your whole life. Must be miserable being a cynical cunt aw the time. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:24am)
  • Their unwavering commitment to company policy is equal parts infuriating and commendable. Truly, divinely ordained, in any case. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:27am)
  • I reckon bus services should probably just be nationalised - or at least, made to operate a bit more humanely and reliably with bigger regulations or whatever - and made either free to use or much cheaper and with better integration of bus and train travel. HOWEVER, every cunt needs to pay for their bus ticket as it stands. It's unfair if two chancers blag their way on to a packed bus with 10% of what their fares should have cost, just 'cos they're skint from their drug habit, when every single other person on a bus that had reached full capacity has had to pay. You could say "well First still made plenty of money off everybody else so what's the issue if two people get a free ride" but again, why should somebody get special privileges just because they've made poor choices with their money? If you're financially irresponsible enough to leave yourself without bus fare to get home with, you're gonnae have to fucking hoof it. I've been there and done it, so should anyone else. Healthcare is a completely different fucking thing and I can't believe that comparison even got brought up in the first place. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:34am)
  • Based. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:37am)
  • I would usually assume that anybody giving me such sparkling praise is taking the cunt, but you did follow me so I'm not entirely sure. Cheers, regardless. I am actually trying to get into journalism at the moment so maybe I'll be lucky enough to write for an esteemed, definitely-not-obsolete publication such as the Record some day. A man can dream. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:41am)
  • I'm not gonna be one of those "you don't know my story" cunts but honestly mate, I have lived as far from a sheltered life as you possibly can in a "first world" country, that's a bold as fuck assumption and quite cheeky to boot. Just thought it was funny, not trying to claim it was a pure momentous, earth-shattering occasion - the irony of describing such a small-scale incident with such flowery verbiage was intentional. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 11th Jul 2022 9:54am)
  • Tennent's is fucking rank. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 21st Jul 2022 4:29pm)
  • It's just been in general, but aye, I reckon you're pretty much spot on there. Shite innit. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 6th Aug 2022 10:25pm)
  • That's a very good point, I was mostly thinking freestyle improv jam but as a drummer I can join in with most of your standard pop/rock covers pretty much on the fly so hadn't considered how that might be prohibitive/preferred for other musicians. So yeah, preferably freestyle but anything goes so long as everybody's on board, really. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 12:28am)
  • The studio I was thinking of hiring is The Audio Lounge in Maryhill, not terribly out of the way and a very cool spot that I'm close to and familiar with. No train lines nearby though. Was thinking of having it from like 6 - half 11/12, possibly a Friday or Saturday evening for convenience - and alcohol - but I am also in a band and we usually rehearse either of those days so it would depend, something I'd need to figure out. If weekday evenings were viable for folk I'd be happy to do that too. Age unimportant, probably just safe to call it 18+ to be on the safe side. Open to all styles, I'm in a metal band myself but I just love music and jamming with people as a whole so anything is cool with me, and of course I'd expect anyone coming to at least be able to confidently jam along with the other punters but you don't need to be a virtuoso. I would like it to be a safe environment for relative beginners to get a better feel for jamming with people and to do some hands-on learning, as well as networking with fellow musicians, but again, if you've just picked up an instrument a few weeks ago it's probably better to patch it or just come and observe and get to know folk. That was a bit longwinded but aye, thanks for your interest! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 12:36am)
  • Awesome! Well, that's 3 people interested already, plus myself - depending on what the other two play, we've got a band already hahaha by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 12:42am)
  • That would be right up my alley too, always fun to jam some mad spacey psych rock stuff by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 1:57am)
  • I've looked for other sessions but most of them seem to be jazz or blues nights, and based more around playing preselected cover songs than just freestyle jamming, as well as open mic nights which I wouldn't really count as a jam as such. Drumming isn't always accommodated for either. If there's anything that falls into the latter category I'd love to hear about it though, someone else mentioned one in Finnieston that sounds interesting. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 3:47pm)
  • Sounds interesting, I'll need to check that out! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 3:54pm)
  • Nope, James hahaha by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 3:53pm)
  • Very true, I was assuming that if more than one of each instrument player turned up we'd just take turns, unfortunately we will be limited by the set up in the room or else we could have a mad electric orchestra on the go by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 3:50pm)
  • Ahhh hahaha fair indeed! I suppose there's a lot of it about, I love metal but it can get exhausting if it's your only outlet. What band you in man? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 4:09pm)
  • Mate no fucking way hahaha, I'm in Sacrificial Burial! This city has such a tight scene, that's mental by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 4:19pm)
  • I know dude that's mental eh hahaha, our first gig was with you guys at Ice Box too mind! That's so mad lmao by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 4:30pm)
  • Good stuff! I am intrigued though, what would you count as decently organised for such a haphazard DIY thing? This will be the first event I've ever put on if it goes ahead, so any advice is welcome by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 4:38pm)
  • Indeed man, you guys have been gigging like fuck since then though, good on yous for getting on the grind right away! But aye, if you're into this jam idea it would be cool to have you along! You should join the sub if you're interested - r/Glasgow_Jamming by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 4:37pm)
  • Sorted, cheers dude :) by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 4:49pm)
  • Seems like you pretty much hit the nail on the head aye! I was planning on getting everything set up a bit early and seeing if the studio could supply some of their house instruments for it. Hadn't really thought about how to manage who's playing and for how long but the Edinburgh jams are pretty lenient about it, usually folk will take a break just so they can chill and have a drink or a smoke so it regulates itself in a way. Obviously don't want folk getting pished and making an arse of it, hopefully most people are sensible enough not to but you never know I suppose, especially if it's in Maryhill lol. I suppose if there's an entry fee it'll encourage folk to be sound too, it's not just a free party you can turn up to already wasted, it's an actual purposeful jam session, albeit a very casual and (hopefully) fun one by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 6:42pm)
  • Ah, nice! I've never jammed with a cellist but that sounds awesome, could compliment mad psychedelic/proggy stuff very nicely, which as you say is what tends to end up happening at these kinds of jams. Good shout with asking people to bring some sort of material with them but I would hope that most people participating in an open jam night would be comfortable with joining in and improvising with little to no preparation by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 6th Sep 2022 9:54pm)
  • If you can be arsed coming to a metal gig, my thrash band Sacrificial Burial is playing Audio next Friday. Plenty of local metal bands I can point you to if you like, my knowledge of other scenes is somewhat lacking but my mates' band Maz and The Phantasms are genuinely one of the best non-metal bands I've ever heard/seen and are playing the day after we are, so that could be a shout too. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 5:25pm)
  • Cheers, lots of interesting stuff to check out on there! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 7:38pm)
  • Nice one, this is a good'un. Thank you! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 7:37pm)
  • I'm not opposed to using a library, just thought I'd see if there were any more convenient online resources first. I reckon a library might be my best bet, tbh. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 7:35pm)
  • I'll need to look that up, thanks for the recommendation! I was trying to look into the history of Riverside House the other day but the only info I could find was regarding it's current status as student accommodation - I'd hoped that places with actual names would be a bit easier to research lol. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 8:39pm)
  • Awesome, would be great to see you there! :) I'm not sure what time we'll be on at but doors are probably around 7. If you decide you'd like to come please DM me and I'll send you the link to our BigCartel, means we can say we've sold more tickets that way 😂 by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 8:37pm)
  • Ha, that's awesome. On the first page of the website there's a drawing and brief description of the Caledonia Road Church, a building which I passed by on the bus very recently and wondered about the history of, but forgot to look into. This is great, cheers again man! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 8:42pm)
  • This is fantastic, just the kind of thing I was looking for, cheers! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 13th Oct 2022 8:40pm)
  • Good point lol, should probably have been more specific. I'm in Ruchill technically but it sounded like it came from the direction of Maryhill Road. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 14th Oct 2022 11:18pm)
  • Based on my experience, 3 pints at Hydro prices would bankrupt most folk, and then some. Maybe it's all the caviar and adrenachrome you're having before/after? But no, seriously, it probably is just dehydration/fatigue. Went to see MCR at the Hydro earlier this year and we were standing about in that enormous, airless chamber for probably about half an hour after doors, almost unable to move because it was so packed, sweating profusely and acutely aware of the ache creeping into my lower back. Felt like going home by the time the fucking support band went on. At least one person passed out and MCR had to stop playing to let them be carried to safety, and I had a thumping headache by the end of the night despite not having drunk anything except water in the venue, so I reckon it's just inadequately ventilated for the amount of bodies it can hold, or something. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 30th Oct 2022 3:32am)
  • "WHAT A LOVELY DAY!" - Hollywood elites after downing a pint of fresh infant blood by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 30th Oct 2022 5:44pm)
  • Fair point, but that doesn't exactly make it sting less. Ideally, the architectural heritage of the city should have been preserved as much as possible, instead of letting "progress" run rampant and cleave massive sections of our history out from under us. Edinburgh mostly had the right idea in that regard, and having been stuck for hours in traffic while navigating both cities at rush hour, I can quite confidently say that the M8 wasn't made any more effectual by having it cut right through the heart of the city. As I'm sure you already know, Glasgow is infamous to this day for its' sudden, mysterious infernos that ravage listed buildings and leave hideous multi-storey car parks and student flats in their wake, so to say that we should just accept what equates to dropping several bombs on the city centre, just because most of it would have happened anyway, kind of misses the point if you ask me. Anyway, sorry for the rant lol, none of this is meant to be taken personally, I'm just very salty about what happened to our city. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 4th Nov 2022 3:43pm)
  • That would presumably still be the case if they had built it elsewhere :P by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 4th Nov 2022 5:17pm)
  • I've never heard someone speak so fondly and optimistically about the M8 before lol, props. I understand the necessity of a motorway going to/through Glasgow, of course, I just think there were a million better places to put it - within the city limits, even - than right through the middle of several historically and architecturally significant, living districts, of the biggest city in Scotland. The general decimation of Glasgows' heritage is what I'm railing against here, not the very existence of the motorway itself - again, a necessity, but one that was unnecessarily destructive and executed with very little foresight as to it's effect on the pedestrian liveability of the city, as well its' atmosphere, both literally and figuratively. I sure do love walking along the precipice of a gaping concrete chasm, filled with the cacophonous din and choking exhaust fumes of thousands of vehicles every day, every time I want to get from fucking Maryhill Road to Sauchiehall Street or whatever, on foot. It's miserable, and so am I whenever it crosses my mind or my path. Maybe we just have different metrics for what progress actually is, at the end of the day. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 4th Nov 2022 6:49pm)
  • This is a really good video OP, only thing I would say is that there is actually some doubt as to whether Thomson was involved in the creation of the Sixty Steps - apparently it's not a sure thing either way, but the steps and retaining wall there were primarily put there by John E. Walker, who owned a lot of the land on the north bank of the Kelvin in the mid 1800s. A lot of interesting history surrounding him and his impact on that area. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 5th Nov 2022 6:50pm)
  • Fair play, as I said, there is some debate as to whether he was involved or not so you're not wrong for including the Steps in the video, just thought I'd point out the ambiguity lol. But yeah, I'd definitely be interested in seeing more videos like this, this kind of thing is right up my alley :) by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 6th Nov 2022 6:44am)
  • Was it a guy or a lassie? If it was the latter, I reckon I know who it might have been. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 7th Nov 2022 10:39pm)
  • That's pretty good price-wise but I have things to attend to here first, so can only travel on the day unfortunately. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 28th Nov 2022 10:48am)
  • I'll have a look, cheers :) I'm not particularly well trained (pun intended) and always struggle to navigate the myriad websites that all claim to have the cheapest tickets lol. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 28th Nov 2022 10:46am)
  • Aye, it would appear I'm just incapable of sniffing out decent prices lmao. I don't actually mind car rides with strangers, I've met some really interesting people that way - I am a guy though, and I'm aware not everyone can be so blasé about trapping themselves in a metal box with someone they've never met for several hours at a time. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 28th Nov 2022 10:55am)
  • As I said, it's a long story lol. They're already on their way down to play a few shows before I meet up with them - I was originally meant to be with them the whole time, but some stuff came up and I had to work it out so, aye, I don't mind paying for a one way train ticket since everything else is taken care of and I have left them without a percussionist for a few gigs. They've still got their drummer so it's not the end of the world anyway. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 28th Nov 2022 1:45pm)
  • I've hitchhiked before, but I wouldn't want to try and do it with a tight time limit because it can often take a good while for someone to stop, in my experience. I'm a pretty big, scruffy looking metalhead dude, so I imagine a lot of people would be put off by that. Plus, the only other time I've hitchhiked was in Portugal and it was bad enough waiting about for hours on end without the added bonus of dealing with Scottish weather in December lol. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 28th Nov 2022 8:44pm)
  • Still begs the question of why it's just been completely abandoned instead of being converted into something useful. Homeless accommodation, perhaps? Obviously it's mainly a lack of funding/profitability to blame, as per, but it's still a very stark sight. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 8th Dec 2022 11:29am)
  • Nah, I don't think it's culturally or historically significant enough to warrant the undertaking of that esteemed Glasgow tradition. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 8th Dec 2022 11:26am)
  • I think he meant once he got back to his gaff, I thought the same at first until I read it again lol by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 9th Dec 2022 2:47pm)

  • Got on the 90 headed for Dalmarnock last week, put my fare in and said where I was going to the driver. "Only going to Parkhead Cross mate." No explanation for why. Didn't complain, just took my ticket and sat down. When the bus stopped I asked him if he knew if there were any other buses that would take me the rest of the way, and he just dismissively mumbled something about the 90 and how it wasn't his route - while driving the 90, and terminating not even halfway along the route for no apparent reason. I just told him no bother and got off. Next 90 wasn't for another half an hour so I just walked the rest of the way, but I wasn't best pleased about it. Shambolic. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 17th Dec 2022 3:17pm)
  • Destination screen? I got on at the end of my street, I'm lucky there's even a timetable at the bus stop lol. The bus showed up as normal on the app so I just assumed it would be fine, but regardless of whether or not I knew it was only a part-route, having an indeterminate percentage of buses running an already unreliable and obscure route stop less than halfway to the actual terminus is a bit mental. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 17th Dec 2022 4:19pm)
  • Ahhh, I see. I'll need to keep an eye out in future, I had no idea the 90 stopped at Parkhead sometimes so I didn't even think to look at it. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 17th Dec 2022 4:55pm)
  • Just so you all know, it's the short arsed rainbow in the background I was referring to lol, not the bridge - which I actually really like https://preview.redd.it/t4gckr72difa1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=03dab05ace079233363199a87dfbd00884b27079 by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 31st Jan 2023 11:53pm)

  • I reckon that's probably what I'll do, cheers for the advice. As I said, he's been really quiet until the past few days so I dunno if he's just been paid and is having a mad wan or if he's only just moved in too, or what. Hopefully it settles down soon. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 23rd Mar 2023 2:47pm)
  • "Cool" and "pleasant" are not always synonymous lol by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 16th Apr 2023 8:04pm)
  • This is actually really fucking interesting, and something I had no clue about. I'll do my best to appreciate them in the meantime. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 18th Apr 2023 3:50am)
  • Aye, me and my pal got a telling off for trying to lift one end of the table the white ball got stuck for the umpteenth time that night. The woman was pretty sound about it though, and in our defense, we only tried to sort it ourselves to save her the hassle. They actually ended up phoning some mechanic guy to come in and footer about with it, which evidently didn't make a difference. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 11th May 2023 1:56pm)
  • Bit late but I'd definitely recommend Hyperoptic if it's available, I was online as soon as the guys fitted my router and I'm only paying £27 a month for their second fastest package, which is more than I even need, really. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 14th May 2023 1:57am)
  • You might be better off going into a branch by the sound of it. It's genuinely astounding how many important things are just impossible to deal with over the phone now. Even the fucking ENT department at the QEUH dinghied me consistently every time I tried to call up and ask if I was any further forward with getting an appointment, over the course of several months. Got some issues with my council tax at the moment as well and there isn't a phone number for enquiries or that, just an automated payment line and an email address. Pisses me off to no end. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 18th May 2023 4:01pm)
  • Maybe I dodged a bullet then lol. I only interacted with them very briefly just before my actual appointment so can't really comment but the physician was pretty sound at least. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 18th May 2023 10:46pm)
  • Aw fuck, nice one, cheers! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 18th May 2023 11:33pm)
  • Yass, cheers lol. I made a point of exploring every wee nook and cranny that looked vaguely interesting, so much shit I had no idea existed despite living here my whole life. The west end really feels like a city unto itself. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 24th Jul 2023 6:12pm)

  • Thank you! Just my phone camera. I've got a Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite, it's pretty decent but as soon as it's even slightly dull the quality drops significantly lol by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 25th Jul 2023 1:04am)
  • It's the old design, the new ones are mostly orange with a blue "I" shape on them. The wee guy in the circle has been relegated to between the words "Irn" and "Bru" - as you can see, the circle cunt has way more real estate on the old cans. According to the attached image, this can is from somewhere between '93 and '07. Quite fitting for it to be in the museum, then. https://preview.redd.it/vvz32gc6tyeb1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=043a1b8b85b33079da5d7e94d518a28ffffc46c6 by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 29th Jul 2023 9:37pm)
  • There's the original (maybe not original original but at least full sugar) one they brought out a while ago aye, it's called 1901 I'm sure. The design is quite different from the old cans though, still mostly orange and quite minimalist iirc. I think they only sell it in the tall skinny cans and glass bottles. EDIT: According to the Barr website, it is actually the original recipe: "The authentic 1901 recipe came from a handwritten recipe book, which was stored deep in the IRN-BRU archives for more than 100 years.  Its distinct difference comes from its ingredients - quillaia for a frothy head, sweetened only with sugar and containing no caffeine, although of course it still has the same top secret IRN-BRU essence!" by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 30th Jul 2023 5:41pm)
  • All good lol, aye that's fair, I don't remember that but it definitely sounds plausible - please enlighten me if you find anything, I'm quite invested in this Irn bru patter now hahaha by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sun 30th Jul 2023 6:42pm)

  • Aye, the stench appears to be a Lovecraftian amalgamation of undesirable odours. There's definitely a tinge of decay but I don't think you could pin it down as just being rotten food. Plus it's hanging over the entirety of Byres Road, at least from Hillhead Station up to GWR, so it can't just be one rank as fuck bin. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 9th Aug 2023 3:31pm)

  • That wasn't the case when I worked there but some of the staff were definitely a bit dodgy in one way or another. Saw security guards pocketing bags of gear that had been dropped to sell them to other punters more than once lol. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 16th Aug 2023 7:30pm)

  • Reassuring to see that nobody seems to have a definite answer. I've never seen this before and I look out this almost every single night, the picture doesn't do justice to how bright it was and it looked pretty big as well. The pic also doesn't show that it looked more like a patch of floating light, didn't look like a beam being protected upwards. It's definitely not the Botanics and I'm pretty sure it's not Oran Mor, unless it's gotten significantly brighter in the past day or so, plus Ibrox is too far west for it to have been that. Pic was taken at 20 past 1 in the morning. The light didn't move or fluctuate at all in the time I spent at the window, which was about 10 minutes max. I'm like 90% sure it isn't aliens but ya know, it's always fun to speculate. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 6th Sep 2023 1:31pm)

  • No worries! My best mate's a Gorbalonian, that part of the city has a fascinating history. There was a leper colony there for quite a while. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 6th Sep 2023 11:28pm)
  • Same here. My old band practiced in Dixon Street Studios (across the road from the mural, building got demolished a few years ago and now there's a hotel or some shit there, still not over it) and one day we stood outside having a smoke and watching that mural being painted. None of us had any fucking clue it was supposed to be Billy Connolly and that cluelessness has persisted until reading this article, in my case anyway. No matter how much I squint I just can't see it as The Big Yin. Boo. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 8th Sep 2023 3:35am)
  • Sounds like a shout, thanks for the advice! I'm quite new to it but I'm using my girlfriend's expensive camera lol so I probably could make them look a lot better with a bit of editing! by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 8th Sep 2023 9:36pm)
  • It does have quite a spooky vibe, now that you mention it. I wonder what the story is there. In fairness though, it is pretty much the perfect spot for a haunted Victorian townhouse. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 9th Sep 2023 2:55pm)
  • It's very possible, I was with my girlfriend and wearing a relatively flamboyant shirt if that rings a bell? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 9th Sep 2023 3:03pm)
  • Thank you! I too was a student at Hillhead in the 2010s and Wellington was still our go-to for end of year assemblies and stuff. Didn't fully appreciate the grandeur of the building at the time, although to be fair I think I only actually went once, as I was a serial dogger back in the day. Shameful, I know. But aye, Glasgow is stuffed to the gills with fantastic architecture, I've focused on the west end for these photos as I stay in Maryhill so it's literally like a 15 minute max walk to Byres Road. I'll definitely go further afield for my next jaunt. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Sat 9th Sep 2023 3:02pm)

  • "This venue supports: LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM" Kind of comes across wrong, don't you think? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 1:10pm)
  • Didn't know it was an actual movement, thought it was just poorly worded. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 1:37pm)
  • Exactly, thank you. I thought that would be fairly obvious given that's literally what the sign says. Just a daft observation. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 1:49pm)
  • What? No, I'm saying it sounds, to me anyway, like they support everything mentioned in the poster. "This venue supports love, music, hate and racism" is how it reads to me. Someone else informed me that Love Music Hate Racism is an actual organisation, which I didn't know until now and which isn't indicated anywhere on the poster. Why would you instantly assume I'm racist just because I interpreted it like that? by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 1:48pm)
  • I don't know but it definitely sounds like it could be. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 1:50pm)
  • I did actually address it sooner than he did, it's just been buried by Reddit's weird comment organisation lol by Benevolent_Miscreant (Fri 22nd Sep 2023 2:05pm)
  • Unfortunately not but funnily enough I've been thinking about it again lately, I'll let you know if anything materialises lol by Benevolent_Miscreant (Mon 2nd Oct 2023 6:05pm)
  • You must be lying on the beach in fuckin' Honolulu then, given how much shite you've been able to contribute to this thread. OP claims to be a miserable cunt but it's ripping out of you, friend. First is useless and we all know it, so I don't know why you've decided this is a good hill on which to die. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Thu 5th Oct 2023 11:34pm)
  • Step shit, probably could have made that clearer. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 21st Nov 2023 12:25pm)
  • I dunno, I was assuming they might have had something to do with the canal in the past, as they lead up towards it. They seem too haphazard, the retaining walls on the rest of that stretch of Bilsland Drive (in the left of the pic) are just sheer grey ashlar, whereas these ones have rougher, reddish stone and come down the slope there in distinct steps, almost as if there was an actual staircase there at one point. Just to the right of the car park and walls is a much more recent building than the tenements and canal infrastructure surrounding it, and there's a fenced off area at the top of that slope, presumably on the bank of the canal. Anyway, I'm hoping someone has a definite answer one way or the other, as I'm just basing all this on some scant evidence and a borderline obsessive interest in trivial local history. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 21st Nov 2023 12:41pm)
  • Think my mate and I walked past you taking one of these pictures lol by Benevolent_Miscreant (Tue 21st Nov 2023 10:19pm)
  • Ahh, that's actually a mislabelled photo of the aqueduct over Maryhill Road, looking east down said road. You can see the old bru building there on the left lol. by Benevolent_Miscreant (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 5:26pm)
