  • In reality there is only around 6 rough sleepers in Glasgow. Yes these people are homeless but they do ultimately have a bed to go to at night. Source, I work for the largest homelessness charity in Scotland by Gonzo1888 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 7:00pm)
  • No worries, my comment was short but if anyone wants more details I’m happy to add by Gonzo1888 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 7:07pm)
  • The local council provide temporary accommodation through housing associations. There’s some hotels still being used such as the Rennie Mac. Then there’s accommodation services ran by charities etc. The council have a duty of care to get you a bed if you present as homeless and the above are the options. GCC have a decent relationship with homeless charities, particularly mine where different homeless caseworkers sometimes base themselves. The people who rough sleep mostly do it by choice because it’s all they’ve known or they feel safer doing this. Don’t get me wrong you’ll still get the odd person sleeping rough on occasion but they are more than likely given a bed after a night or too. A lot of the beggars will have a bed to go to, that’s not to say they aren’t hungry, extremely poor or have a whole host of other problems. But a bed for the night usually isn’t one of them. I’m in no way saying homelessness isn’t a huge problem in the city, it is. It’s tragic by Gonzo1888 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 8:12pm)
  • Unfortunately it depends on their circumstances. If they work and earn a high enough wage then yes. Similarly if you’re a student, it’s really cruel because people have had to give up work or further education in order to be able to apply for universal credit because some of these services can be expensive. The system is fucked by Gonzo1888 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 8:28pm)
  • It’s true, our guys who are part of the street team know who they are. It’ll fluctuate from time to time but the number isn’t as high as you’d expect. Like I said in another comment, most people who rough sleep in Glasgow do it through choice by Gonzo1888 (Thu 18th Nov 2021 9:00pm)

  • Avoid homeless project Scotland. Although on a surface level they do good, which they do. They feed people etc but they are ran by a complete charlatan. Have been causing lots of bother like harassing staff from other charities and refusing to work in partnership. by Gonzo1888 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 12:53pm)
  • Don’t get me wrong they do good things, they have good people working for them. But like I said they harass people from other third sector organisations, are noising up the council, refusing to work with other people. Spreading misinformation and lots of their staff/volunteers lack the proper training to support the very people they say they are trying to help by Gonzo1888 (Thu 8th Dec 2022 9:34pm)

  • I did a course in filmmaking there. If that’s the industry you want to get into then I’d say it’s a waste of time and money. Much better to find work as a runner and work your way up. Can’t speak for the other courses by Gonzo1888 (Sun 20th Aug 2023 4:01pm)
  • Listen man I don’t want to upset you or anything but that’s just my experience. I went to the place because I thought it would be worthwhile as you do a lot of practical work cause I had never done anything around creating a film before. But I found in the industry it really doesn’t matter. It’s all about experience, a degree is just a bit of paper. When I graduated it was really tough, I worked as a runner here and there but the lack of job security, long hours etc put me off and I found out the industry wasn’t really for me. I don’t think anyone who was on my course works in the industry either, that’s out of 15 people. I believe one of my classmates is now a lecturer there. I don’t want to say cut your losses and don’t bother, it is a lot of money, but this is just my experience. I would advise though, work really hard at producing good quality work, I mean really hard. That way when you graduate you might be able to get funding for future shorts etc. If you just want to work in camera or editing etc then be prepared to start from the very bottom. All of the gigs I got didn’t come from any contacts at SAE. I had a couple of mates who did film at university and it came through contacts they made. Keep an eye out for creative Scotland entry posts. They would probably be much more valuable. You’d be working on a project for an extended period of time, earning money and most importantly making contacts. Filmmaking is all about networking dude. Good luck by Gonzo1888 (Sun 20th Aug 2023 4:31pm)
  • Not at all man, I graduated in 2015. Worked here and there on a few productions on and off between then and 2019 before I called it quits. I think it took me about 6 months to get my first gig and that was only like 3 days work. If you want to make your own films, you know like write/direct or just direct then make sure the work you produce is of the highest quality man, get that reel polished for future funding opportunities. If you get offered any work while your there, take it. No matter what it is. Take it! Work hard and stay familiar with whoever you worked with. These people will be key when you finish. During your course work explore as many different roles in the industry you can, if you find something you really like then stick with it. Work on all your classmates projects as that specific role and make becoming one of those roles as your primary focus. You’ll still have to start as a runner but you can work your way up to it. If you want to work in the camera department speak to those guys on set when you get a chance, wanna be a grip? Talk to the grips. Props, talk to those guys. From my experience, unless your making your own films. You don’t want to be a Jack of all trades, you want to be a master at one so you can get steady consistent work. Most importantly man, if you haven’t already. GET YOUR FUCKING DRIVING LICENSE BEFORE YOU GRADUATE. It will help you MASSIVELY when looking for work as a runner. Again dude, good luck! by Gonzo1888 (Sun 20th Aug 2023 4:54pm)

I note you’ve said you have a motorbike, just use it. You’ll save precious minutes of sleep. You’ll be on the motorway in no time from trongate on those early starts and can fly up to road. I worked with people who used public transport at the airport and they hated not having a vehicle. Good luck with role! What are you going to do? I was a dispatcher and loved it!
