  • Amazing. Once I found the guest house (and it's amazing it's STILL a guest house) I was 99% convinced it was the right place. Thank you! by Maffers (Wed 6th May 2020 12:46pm)

  • I saw Tibo, as they were the first one I came across on google maps as I was following the path I remembered taking. I knew it wasn't them as it was smaller than what I remembered it being. Looks like I'll have to come down south for a few days. Ha. by Maffers (Wed 6th May 2020 1:59pm)

  • Cafe Strange brew. Had an amazing breakfast there last month. Years and years ago I went ot a place called Coia's, which was a small Italian restaurant and Cigar shop. Had an awesome lasagne. It's still there, but now a lot more modern and a restaurant/deli. Next time I'm down I might make a point of trying to go. by Maffers (Fri 4th Nov 2022 2:33pm)
  • Yeah, this. Same reason that my town has a Screwfix and a Toolstation almost next door to each other. Or when a Supermarket opens up, they'll open a rival close by. There's an established market in that area, people go to that area for that thing, so they take trade from an existing customer base. by Maffers (Fri 1st Sep 2023 11:12am)
  • It's fucking awful. I didn't drink lager for years when I was younger as I'd only ever had Tennants and it was disgusting. This past maybe 10 years I've only recently discovered drinking beers, the range of styles and types, etc. I'd rather not drink at all if Tennants was the only option. by Maffers (Mon 4th Sep 2023 3:03pm)
  • Get an amazing burger and loaded fries at Primal Feast on Victoria Road. Thier deep dish pizzas look incredible, but the big boi chilli burger with Feast fries was absolutely stunning. by Maffers (Tue 24th Oct 2023 11:29pm)
  • I've made a reservation at Bizarron for when I'm down in a couple of weeks. Latin American type, tacos, loaded fries, empanadas, cocktails etc. Looks awesome. by Maffers (Tue 24th Oct 2023 11:27pm)

  • My favourite cafe is Cafe Strangebrew, but it's far too busy to sit there studying. I doubt you'd get to keep a table long enough. by Maffers (Fri 17th Nov 2023 3:52pm)
  • Cafe Strangebrew for Breakfast. Love the food there. I was down to Glasgow and went to a Latin American restaurant called Bizarron, right next to Central Station. Great veggie options, lovely food, rum cocktails and a really nice vibe. Good date spot I reckon. I you are willing to drive for approx 1h +, I'd recommend Ossian's hall of Mirrors in Dunkeld. by Maffers (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 12:58pm)
  • I live in NE Aberdeenshire so it's not very often I get the chance to go for breakfast, but I'm down in 2-3 weeks again and staying overnight. I wasn't planning heading out that way this time but I might be tempted! Any city centre recommendations? by Maffers (Wed 22nd Nov 2023 1:32pm)
  • Any good at poker? Join your local nuts or redtooth poker league. I did and it's been great. Typically 3 hours one evening. Good group of people. Occasionally bigger events like Regionals and nationals. by Maffers (Tue 28th Nov 2023 6:59am)
  • Hi. So I play in the nuts league. Some venues do both nuts and redtooth at the same time (they work pretty much the same). So, if you google nuts poker, click on the "league tables" card and select local leagues, select your national region then your local region and it will give you a list of all the venues in that area including what nights they play and you can click on each venue to see a list of people who have played at that venue this season. You don't play for money, you pay an entrance fee, my venue is £11. This covers £5 for the prize pot, £2 to the league, £2 to the venue and £1 to the tournament director. The extra £1 goes into a pot for the best hand of the night. We regularly have 16-24 players so it can be worthwhile. But every venue is different. We start at 8pm, starting with 5K of chips, blinds start at 25/50 and increase every 15 mins. Half time (with food supplied) at 9pm and the game normally wraps up between 10:15-11pm. You get points for attending and the top 8 get more points depending on how many players there are and finishing position. Each venue has a "red line" and players above this line get invited to the regionals at a local casino at the end of the season (every 3 months). Do well and you can go to the nationals. As more players go out over the course of the night there will be a table set up for a "cash game" but it's not playing with actual cash. It's £5 buy in (with rebuys until a certain time) and prizes for top 3. by Maffers (Tue 28th Nov 2023 11:08am)
  • Not a problem. I only ever played online, like zynga etc. So after covid when I heard they were starting up again I made a point of going. Everyone at my club is great, I've made some good pals (easier said than done at 40!), I've been invited to games at peoples houses, there's been local charity games, Xmas and New Year games and days out to the regionals (which I won last Oct, got £400-odd quid and a shiny trophy), got to the nationals (where I did absolutely shit). There's a lot of different venues in my area. I could pretty much play every night of the week except Saturday if I wanted to and was happy to drive about. If you like a game of poker, or even if you want to learn how to play and have never played before, I'd definitely recommend it. You could even start your own if you had a local pub/club willing to host and knew a few people willing to come along. by Maffers (Tue 28th Nov 2023 11:48am)
