  • You'll find a couple of pubs in the West End that cater to the recent Highland community such as the Islay Inn. There's a couple of others but that's the one that I know of. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Sat 15th Jan 2022 4:46pm)
  • Seems like a bit of a waste to demolish it rather than repurpose parts of an existing building. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Fri 21st Jan 2022 1:20pm)

  • While it's not an actual party I'd argue that Paul Sweeney is a very 'Glasgow' politician. Other than that Scotland tends to be more centralised and less 'regional' in my view than say England or Ireland. Even somewhere like Shetland which is far off the British mainland has no 'official' regional party despite it being probably more distant and less influential in Scottish politics, where as a lot of Scottish political and cultural life revolves around Glasgow. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Sun 6th Mar 2022 10:42pm)
  • Like the other comment says Gerry Hassan generally has good stuff. David Torrance is another author that I'd recommend, he has a few books on various aspects of Scottish politics. Tom Devine's 'Independence or Union' is another good shout in terms of the historical aspects of the current constitutional debate. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Sun 6th Mar 2022 10:46pm)
  • As a side note it's coming into spring so you can begin to grow some if you've got any space for it. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Sun 20th Mar 2022 6:33pm)
  • At least that guy with the guitar on Argyle street learned some new tunes over lockdown, before that he kept switching between the two T=rex songs on loop. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 3:49pm)
  • Scottish Labour exists as a semi-autonomous entity and like most people in Scottish politics nowadays, are primarily defined by their position in terms of independence vs unionism as opposed to left wing vs right wing. There's push back against this from the more Corbynite people who tend to be more ambivalent towards the union/don't really care about the independence issue but the people in the driving seat are very much Blairite/more right wing unionists such as Anas Sarwar and Jackie Baillie amongst others. Labour were for the latter part of the 20th century and early years of the 21st, the establishment party in Scotland, since then they have lost lots of voters to the SNP and Greens and more importantly lost their position as the top dogs of Scottish politics, largely due to the optics of being seen working with the Tories in the 2014 referendum Better Together campaign. I'd say personally that the top brass seem really bitter that they've lost their position to the SNP and the fact that they've lost key demographics that were traditionally Labour such as young people and Catholics to the SNP and pro-independence side. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Thu 26th May 2022 7:08pm)
  • According to a documentary series I watched the Glasgow accent is the only one that is becoming more distinct, everything else is more homogenised. Whish I find weird anecdotally as I've noticed more and more people with the 'Glasgow uni accent', which I view as a less distinct accent. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Mon 6th Jun 2022 7:48pm)
  • That comparison has been made quite a few times in various ways already. Both were industrial cities and likewise affected by deindustrialisation. Both have had historically large 'minority' communities (Black people/Irish Catholics). Both have had a large 'slum clearance' that resulted in suburbanisation. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Thu 16th Jun 2022 12:40pm)

  • >(and the Labour Party) What are you basing this off of? Labour historically had a hold over the Catholic vote in Scotland with the old Unionist party (later Conservatives) being traditionally linked to the Orange order and the Kirk as an institution and the SNP being somewhat anti-Catholic in nature (see William Wolfe). They were actually accused at one point of anti-Protestant sectarianism by allocating more funding to Coatbridge compared to Airdrie is what then became known as the Monkland's scandal. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Sat 2nd Jul 2022 1:28pm)

  • Get what you mean about nothing to do. I used to have a swatch around pet shops if I was passing, just as if it was a mini zoo where I'd look at the fish tanks and birds and then buy a dog treat to give me a reason to have went in. They seem to have completely vanished in the past 4-5 years possibly longer than that. by Otocolobus_manul8 (Fri 14th Oct 2022 6:42pm)
