  • While very few of us are evil enough to make stuff up to newcomers for fun, a dictionary will protect you from this. Pocket Scots Dictionary (Scottish National Dictionary Publications) (Scots Language Dictionaries) https://amzn.eu/d/cbFXYgk For immersion in the accent before you arrive, try this Still Game: https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80073432?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cp&vlang=en&clip=81149446 And this: Rab C Nesbitt https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLP5Ywdrrf2wzzmTuo8PIZbdYFva_OENfd by Saint__Thomas (Tue 19th Jul 2022 10:55am)
  • Carnbooth AA Battery. https://maps.app.goo.gl/dji5XFjE1FmiTW9V7 Old buildings, abandoned. There are signs up explaining the history. Nice place for a picnic weather permitting. by Saint__Thomas (Mon 15th Aug 2022 6:14pm)

  • I have Polish subtitles set up in Netflix and Amazon to soak up vocabulary passively. Oscar Swan's "Nutshell" polish grammar may help. http://www.placedauphine.net/random/PolishGrammar.pdf It seems to be designed to help university students learn by brute force, but it has all the grammatical rules, and tables; learn the tables, it may make other forms of learning quicker. • Of you don't have smart meters, make sure you submit readings to your supplier regularly. If you don't they may be estimating your bill. If you have been frugal, then your bill may be less than you think. It is none of your landlord's business if you have a smart meter installed. by Saint__Thomas (Sun 11th Dec 2022 7:21pm)

  • Please make sure you have acommodation organised, or you might end up commuting in from East Kilbride, or somewhere as far out. Not that there is anything necessarily wrong with East Kilbride or any of the outskirts, but you want the Glasgow experience. Be prepared for the weather. It will be colder than you're used to, and more changeable . The old joke goes that if you don't like Scottish weather, wait 15 minutes. For orientation to the culture: Bruce Fummey's Scottish History [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmSwBBdhuJ39zaA437NaeXA](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmSwBBdhuJ39zaA437NaeXA) Scottish tour guide and Stand up comedian. He has a good handle on Glasgow Culture: Still Game [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvEANFfYHSc&list=PLiacTaYXyRfxMFMOGl6KRLpA6y11JFKZ4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvEANFfYHSc&list=PLiacTaYXyRfxMFMOGl6KRLpA6y11JFKZ4) Rab C nesbit [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8wKhwyVaeY&list=PLvHN\_1Tl9V3s8P6sGZqjRVwMLmlzRpE1r](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8wKhwyVaeY&list=PLvHN_1Tl9V3s8P6sGZqjRVwMLmlzRpE1r) One one level these series do draw on a variety of stereotypes and memes. If you understand the language (in Rab C nesbit especially ) then the dialect in Glasgow will hold no terrors. On the other level if you say you researched Scottish culture by watching Rab C Nesbit it will be an effective icebreaker. I realise that these recommendations will show that I am old. I hope everything goes well for you. by Saint__Thomas (Wed 9th Aug 2023 8:17pm)
  • I started a similar thread last year. https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/comments/w0mzy9/bike_parking_in_glasgow/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=2 There is some good advice on this which I heeded.
