  • The sunday morning chess will potentially extend past august too but it's all dependent on weather. I personally didn't really attend the sunday sessions last year as i'm a night owl so i'm not fully aware of how long the sessions went on for throughout the season although i've not heard anyone talk about stopping it any time soon. by Saturn3142 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 12:17pm)
  • yesss my guy, d4 to the moon by Saturn3142 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 7:08pm)
  • I'm not entirely sure about cheques. I don't see why we couldn't take them but I'll need to double check and get back to you shortly with an answer mate. We do take cash/direct debit though if that's any help in the meantime. I'll try and get you an answer within the next couple of hours. by Saturn3142 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 7:08pm)
  • We really do have all sorts of players. We have a guy who we play with a lot that just started a few months ago and we've all been giving him tips. He's currently only about 400 rating if that means anything (very low rated, a complete beginner if you will). Don't hesitate to come join us because we're all noobs in the grand scheme of chess (even our advanced players when you compare them to title players...). At the end of the day, it's about having fun. by Saturn3142 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 7:11pm)
  • Don't worry, I'm sure there will be a bunch of players available that are closer to your rating than you expect. Also... D5. by Saturn3142 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 7:50pm)
  • Thank you! Hopefully we can get the Glasgow chess scene (as well as the larger Scottish chess scene) booming again. One can hope. by Saturn3142 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 9:01pm)
  • Honestly that's not a dumb question at all. You don't have to bring any sets. Feel free to bring your own if you have one though. The official club meetings on Tuesdays should have enough sets (and if not, we'll purchase more). As for the Sunday meet-ups, people typically bring their own boards however there should be enough people bringing their own boards that you might not necessarily need to. If you wish you attend the Sunday meet-ups and you happen to have a board though, then you're probably best bringing it just in case. Hope that helps mate! by Saturn3142 (Fri 19th Aug 2022 6:05pm)
  • No problem. We look forward to seeing you. by Saturn3142 (Sun 28th Aug 2022 3:55pm)
  • I look forward to it then. I'll see you there. by Saturn3142 (Sat 17th Sep 2022 8:49pm)
  • Sorry folks, I should have clarified that it's a £1k portion we're aiming for, from the overall 35k fund. I've updated the post now. Thanks for pointing it out. by Saturn3142 (Thu 29th Sep 2022 9:35am)
  • Not enough by Saturn3142 (Thu 29th Sep 2022 1:01pm)
  • I actually don't think it'd be hard for us to spend 35k tbh. A bunch of staunton and dgi boards + a few trophies, a larger venue for hire, more chess clocks, online ads, a few posters & left over money to use as tournament prizes if we ever held a tournament. I can just keep dreaming for now... Alternatively we could probably just rent magnus for a night by Saturn3142 (Thu 29th Sep 2022 2:52pm)
  • Well, we'd love to have you. Just come down whenever suits. If you want to join the whatsapp chat then just send me your name/number. by Saturn3142 (Fri 4th Nov 2022 7:51pm)
  • We all have to start somewhere! And anyway, it's all pretty casual and chilled out. Plus, you'll probably learn a lot faster by just being around some of our more experienced players (if you even care about learning anyway lol) by Saturn3142 (Fri 4th Nov 2022 8:10pm)
  • also if you want tom join the whatsapp group then just send me your name/number. by Saturn3142 (Fri 4th Nov 2022 8:15pm)
  • You would be amazed at the amount of people who have joined and said similar things. Many learned when they were young but slowly fell away from the game... but now's your chance to try it again! If you want to join the whatsapp group, just send me your name/number. by Saturn3142 (Fri 4th Nov 2022 8:15pm)
  • I waited a whole 55 minutes on Paisley Road West for literally any bus to come and take me to kinning park. Maybe 7-8 buses came but were all full and wouldn't let folk on. It was absolutely pissing down as well. When I finally got a bus, I noticed that literally every bus stop thereafter was full and everyone was talking about having just waited 40+ minutes etc... on one of the busiest bus routes in Glasgow. The misery of it all. Maybe we could start a separate reddit page just for venting about first bus? by Saturn3142 (Mon 7th Nov 2022 2:50pm)
  • Glad to hear it! by Saturn3142 (Wed 11th Jan 2023 11:26pm)
  • please, anything but a spoons by Saturn3142 (Wed 18th Jan 2023 5:26pm)
  • Interesting stuff. Yeah, I can imagine it'd be pretty pricey, but I feel that if the initial investment was there and it got refurbished well enough then there would be tonnes of people paying to use it. by Saturn3142 (Wed 18th Jan 2023 5:25pm)
  • Yeah, there are a few people around that level for you to play - and a few people a bit higher rated who can help you learn a bit faster too. It's a great place to start getting involved in local chess. by Saturn3142 (Fri 24th Feb 2023 8:12am)
  • Amazing. Yeah, it's every Thursday by Saturn3142 (Fri 24th Feb 2023 8:11am)
  • I'm not sure - maybe it is, but we've not been informed yet. If it did close then we would just need to go and find another venue again (We previously operated in Brodies). by Saturn3142 (Fri 24th Feb 2023 8:10am)
  • Thanks man. However, I'm not actually able to see it there? Where abouts would I find it? Also, another good club to add, for Juniors, is Lenzie Chess Academy. They operate in GarnetHill Multicultural Centre. by Saturn3142 (Fri 24th Feb 2023 8:10am)
  • Yeah, you'd really enjoy it. It definitely is wholesome. Hopefully you find the time to make it eventually by Saturn3142 (Sat 25th Feb 2023 9:21am)
  • Why is everyone being such an arsehole?? The individual was just asking for local recommendations for fuck sake. u/MomentaryApparition, u/i_mightbewrong, u/satellitexyears, u/eddiecointreau, u/GoGoGoldenSyrup have none of you got anything positive to contribute? What was the point in commenting? Maybe the individual did do some research beforehand and found out about local restaurants, bars, cafes etc but maybe they were curious about additional local clubs and activities that are less well know? Be better. by Saturn3142 (Wed 29th Mar 2023 10:34am)
  • >It's completely unacceptable that First Bus has announced cancellation of night time services in Glasgow. This is another blow adding to an increasingly poor public transport system which is not working for the people of the city. You should understand the anger and disatisfaction felt by people about this issue which doesn't seem to be improving. > >Night time buses are a lifeline for night shift workers. This latest announcement will make night time travel almost entirely unviable for many Glasgow residents, including those who work in the city centre. The removal of night buses will be extremely damaging to the city's night time economy and presents clear and urgent safety issues for people trying to get around at night time, especially women. > >What are you \[Councillor X\] doing to improve public transport services in Glasgow? > >What steps will you \[Councillor X\] take to challenge this action by First Bus and force the reinstatement of night time services? > >The council is proceeding with plans towards establishing a franchise system for buses within the city. This however is only in early stages with indications it may take up to seven years or longer to launch. Do you believe this is quick enough given the scale of issues present within our transport system, and what steps will you take to speed up delivery? That's me just emailed all my councilors, MSP's & my MP. Now to see who can be bothered replying. by Saturn3142 (Tue 11th Jul 2023 1:25pm)
  • I've contacted all of my representatives about this issue, including Councilors, MSP's & MP. The email I sent was lengthy with relevant detail, but so far only 3/13 have responded despite the email being sent on 11/07. I thought I'd make a little spreadsheet to keep track of them all and so far the results are a bit depressing. I currently live around Pollok/Crookston which just happens to mean I'm represented by leaders of three parties... Humza Yousaf, Anas Sarwar & Patrick Harvie. I've attached a screenshot of my spreadsheet - make of it what you will. For the record, I am absolutely no fan of the Tories. I'd advise everyone else to do the same as me, contact all your representatives about this issue and keep a record of it all because it'll come in handy later on when you expose those representatives that couldn't be bothered to reply. https://preview.redd.it/gxwnlg6paxbb1.png?width=1861&format=png&auto=webp&s=8aa99fee86e31854903ec9403887de09e5876689 by Saturn3142 (Fri 14th Jul 2023 1:25pm)
  • Where abouts in Glasgow are you moving to? e.g. southside, eastend by Saturn3142 (Wed 30th Aug 2023 11:36am)
  • Yeah there are a lot of beginner/novice players around 800-1000 in similar shoes, but also a bunch of more intermediate players around 1400-1700 who can also give you useful tips etc. Everyone's really big on helping each other learn which is pretty good. Good community of folk by Saturn3142 (Thu 31st Aug 2023 8:48am)
  • Yep, drinks will still be available. You're welcome to come watch, drink and meet folk by Saturn3142 (Thu 31st Aug 2023 8:59pm)
  • Given everything you said above, you're welcome to come and learn chess at [QPCC](https://queensparkchessclub.com/join-us/). Sounds like something you might enjoy. Lots of folk only just getting into the game + pints + strong sense of community. by Saturn3142 (Thu 7th Sep 2023 3:54pm)
  • I'm still saving up currently but hoping to buy in maybe a year. I'm aiming to buy somewhere in the southside, preferably within 1-2 miles of Queens Park (not bothering looking at Shawlands too much because I'm well aware of how wild the market is there nowadays...). I'd be aiming for a one bed for myself. How much do you all think I'd need to save? I know it depends specifically on the exact area. My aim was to find something for offers over 110k, with the expectation being that the HRV might be \~120k and then the final price might be \~130k. I'm aiming to save close to 30k hopefully to cover the initial deposit (10% is my aim) + additional price over the the home report (again, I estimate 10%). Does 30k savings sound about right for this? For reference, areas I'm looking at include: Govanhill, Crosshill, Battlefield, Cathcart, Mount Florida, Pollokshields, Eglinton, Shawlands (again, doubtful), and if needed then I'd be open to considering other areas around Glasgow like Dennistoun, Finnieston, Partick, Govan, Garnethill etc - really somewhere at least closer to the center of Glasgow. I'm also aware that the prices can vary wildly between all the areas I've just listed. Thanks for any help! by Saturn3142 (Tue 17th Oct 2023 12:18pm)
  • I only went a few times as few years back as a teenager so I can't say much, but it's fairly middle-class with lots of decent houses and somewhat decent schools. It felt quite isolated when I went though with not much immediately nearby. You would need a car to really do anything if you lived there, or otherwise expect longish walks to shops and amenities. by Saturn3142 (Tue 7th Nov 2023 9:54am)
