  • Welcome to Glasgow! Which university/school will you be studying at and do you have any areas in mind already? There can be quite large differences in price in different parts of the city. It’s totally feasible you’d be able to find a fully or near to fully furnished place :) good luck with the move - there’s also lots of great dog walking places in and around Glasgow. Can’t promise the Californian weather though! by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 9:19pm)
  • I would agree with the comment above - parking in the west end without a residents permit is a nightmare so if you’re commuting you’d need to rely on public transport. That being said, there’s the train, subway and buses so plenty of options! It’s a lovely area to live in with lots of parks, restaurants and shops. It’s very studenty so great access to university facilities. It can also be expensive though and just in my own experience, be aware that *some* flats are ‘student flats’ - eg shitty windows and not always looked after. Look out for that. Otherwise, a great area for a first home in Glasgow. Hillhead, Woodlands, Finnieston, Yorkhill, Hyndland, Partick etc. The Southside is more residential but a bit cheaper and plenty of parks, restaurants and shops. You can commute via train or subway if you’re near Shields Road, where there’s also a park and ride. Street parking in the Southside is also far easier than the west end. Think Shawlands, Pollokshields, Langside, Strathbungo, Mount Florida, etc. The merchant city and Dennistoun might also be good, commutable options for you! I’d avoid the city centre around Sauchiehall street area personally unless your massive party goers... Rightmove is probably a good place to start! Local estate agents and occasionally gumtree can be good places to search too. Or join Facebook groups for local areas and put out a post asking after landlords :) by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 10:07pm)
  • Would highly recommend that! There’s fb groups for almost every area/bit in Glasgow. A great way to learn more about the local community there and ask questions. by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 10:40pm)
  • Although it’s great having Kelvin way closed it’s been a nightmare for traffic with cars needing to go down to Partick to try and get through and then drive right round. Then again they could always run the subway at decent hours and/or on a Sunday evening to avoid me having to use my car to meet my people in the west end... by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 30th Aug 2020 12:01pm)
  • Totally agree - but the point I was making was that while Kelvin way is closed but the subway isn’t a viable alternative on an evening or Sunday I would still use my car, and it being closed will cause more traffic elsewhere in the west end. If they want to pedestrianise more areas, which is great, they need to have adequate public transport at decent times of day/night by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 30th Aug 2020 8:17pm)
  • I truly hope so! I’ve been in Glasgow for 12 years and they were ‘preparing for extended opening hours’ then 🤦🏻‍♀️ by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 31st Aug 2020 3:58pm)
  • I’m from down south and have lived in Glasgow for over ten years. Like any city, it depends which area you’re in, but Glasgow generally is a great place to live. I’ve never witnessed anything concerning in my time here. Govanhill itself has its pros and cons but there’s loads of great things to do nearby. by Spirited_Rub119 (Thu 17th Sep 2020 10:31pm)
  • I got some from the greengrocers in Pollokshields - Zucchini! It’s great for random stuff like that by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 18th Sep 2020 7:33am)
  • I’ve lived in several cities in the UK and two abroad in Europe - all bigger and more built up than Glasgow. Glasgow is without a doubt the worst place for litter, fly tipping and general shite that I’ve ever experienced. It’s very much a Glasgow problem and, not being from here, I just can’t get my head around it. Is it a cultural thing?! Just this morning I walked past a mattress, two old chairs, suitcases and a pile of dirty clothes just chucked on the street. Vile. by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 28th Sep 2020 7:03pm)
  • Vote for someone other than the SNP? Everyone on here is rightly frustrated at the state of Glasgow, budget cuts, the incompetency of politicians and the council, yet every local/Scottish/general election the SNP win with a landslide. Im not actually that politically minded so don’t mean this in an aggressive way, I’m just genuinely curious! by Spirited_Rub119 (Tue 24th Nov 2020 11:30pm)
  • Thanks for your help, much appreciated by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 21st Dec 2020 4:00pm)
  • Thank you! I’ll do that by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 21st Dec 2020 4:00pm)
  • Thank you! I just got mine after calling the centre ☺️ by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 21st Dec 2020 6:47pm)
  • Thanks everyone! I called the number on the card and then half an hour later they came through after a couple of days waiting. Much appreciated! by Spirited_Rub119 (Tue 22nd Dec 2020 12:32pm)
  • Gulabi photo studio! They’re based in Govanhill/Shawlands but have drop off points around the city by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 1st Jan 2021 3:32pm)
  • Dude I was just naming a general area for ease/understanding. I don’t know where the OP is based. by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 1st Jan 2021 7:57pm)
  • Don’t move from Hawaii to Glasgow. Don’t do it to yourself. by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 29th Jan 2021 8:50pm)
  • It’s honestly not always the people you might stereotype as doing this either - last week I saw a very posh looking older woman blow her nose, drop the dirty tissue on the ground and walk away when a bin was just over the road. People here are honestly rotten. by Spirited_Rub119 (Wed 10th Feb 2021 7:21pm)
  • I get the good work they’re trying to do but dumping it outside Queen’s Park is a just adding to the problem, creating a hazard for families, wildlife, and potentially blocking access to the park. Don’t see how it would solve anything. Dump it outside the council doors if anywhere! by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 15th Feb 2021 5:23pm)
  • I’d definitely join something! At this rate, if it goes ahead, I’d love loads of us to turn up outside the COP conference. Not saying it isn’t good for the city but you know that as soon as the ‘influential’ famous people arrive they’ll clean up specific areas around them while everyone else is left to rot. The Southside is looking absolutely rancid. I’ve written to all our counsellors, MP and Nicola Sturgeon who’s our MSP. No response from anyone. Yes people can be as much to blame here but it needs a joint effort between the council, people and businesses. The tone GCC is taking with folk right now is appalling. Work with them not against them! by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 15th Feb 2021 5:20pm)
  • Yeah I do completely get they’re trying to help raise awareness of a problem and that’s admirable. Personally I don’t understand this particular location when the park a huge outlet for folk at the moment and for some is the only calm environment they might be experiencing. Good on them for the work they’re doing though. by Spirited_Rub119 (Mon 15th Feb 2021 10:16pm)
  • I’ve thought this too. They’ll clean up the surrounding area for COP so it looks nice for the cameras while everyone else continues to suffer - standard GCC behaviour and the irony of the theme of the conference is palpable! I’d love to organise something around it to show them up by Spirited_Rub119 (Tue 23rd Feb 2021 8:20pm)
  • Yeah, it’s shit. It’s not something I get much fun out of or imagine other people do too. It’s about trying to do something good in the local community instead of complaining. Agree there’s other action that can also be taken though, hence the original post. by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 26th Feb 2021 5:58pm)
  • I’ve got a litter picker and try to go round and pick up too, or just take a bag when I’m out for a walk. It can get demoralising when it just reappears. Just wanted to say fully behind your COP plans, keep us updated. by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 26th Feb 2021 5:56pm)
  • The tone that GCC has been taking with people lately is appalling. Instead of trying to work with folk they’re continuously going on the offensive and then putting in place blatant cost cutting exercises and trying to justify it under rEcYcLiNg despite having piss poor facilities and infrastructure. Said it once and I’ll say it again: this city and the Scottish government is planning on holding a massive climate change conference later this year. They deserve to be shown up. by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 6th Mar 2021 9:23pm)
  • Find out what the plumbing situation is!! we found out after moving in that our cold water was coming from a water tank in the property that we knew nothing about and was filthy. It’s actually illegal to have them set up like that now but we were none the wiser and it wasn’t in the home report. Also, always ask where the stopcock is! by Spirited_Rub119 (Thu 11th Mar 2021 9:44am)
  • Ha, you’ve got to laugh at her utter cheek. I’ve said this in other threads - I’d LOVE for Glasgow to be cleaned up and have regular action taken to do it. But it shouldn’t be COP that’s the catalyst for this. People deserve to live in clean areas where sanitation is provided as part of their public services NOT because there’s some bigwigs coming to town. And as much as I’d love the litter and fly tipping to be curbed, there’s a small part of me that wants GCC to be shown up publicly too... by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 13th Mar 2021 6:59pm)
  • 100% yes! But it’s not just people vs council. Litter bins are overflowing. Green bins aren’t picked up enough leading to black bags being dumped. Recycling pick ups were delayed for ages leading to things falling out the bins onto streets. Then people add to the litter because hey, if there’s loads there anyway that what difference is a bit more going to make? Some people are just scummy for sure, but a lot of the mess can easily be traced back to cuts in services from GCC. by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 13th Mar 2021 7:03pm)
  • The litter on the streets in general is terrible - sometimes it manky people but a lot of the time it’s from overflowing bins, overflowing recycling bins etc that aren’t emptied enough. The contents get left on the ground. Then more people litter because there’s already piles of crap there anyway... by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 10:53am)
  • ALSO! Businesses need to be part of this too. There’s been a huge increase in takeaways - here in the southside half the litter is takeaway containers that are non recyclable and plastic bags. They need to actively provide more sustainable options and been part of discussions about the impact of their businesses on the environment. by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 10:55am)
  • I used to live in England, a bigger city than Glasgow but not half as much litter and flytipping. It’s much more of a problem here. No city is perfect but in Glasgow it seems to be ingrained into the culture (and I say this as someone who loves Glasgow and wants it to be even better! But when I have friends visit it just looks a state) by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 12:40pm)
  • Lol so that’s why Susan was asking for us to basically do their job! Great work as ever, thank you for doing this. GCC makes Glasgow manky. by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 26th Mar 2021 12:33pm)
  • That’s awful! Medication can help but if you don’t feel comfortable with it or want to try another route first your doctor should be completely understanding of that. I’ve just completed 8 weeks of therapy as I wasn’t keen on pills either and it’s helped me immensely. Good luck with it, I hope it helps you. by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 28th Mar 2021 9:09pm)
  • Seagulls, but also people dumping rubbish bags in the street so they can be attacked by them/GCC letting the bins totally overflow by Spirited_Rub119 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 9:00am)
  • Lived in quite a few cities now and sadly for all its positives Glasgow is above and beyond when it comes to rubbish/litter by Spirited_Rub119 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 9:12am)
  • Genuine thanks for all the insightful comments. Glad it’s not just me getting monumentally pissed off - this photo isn’t a one time thing, unfortunately I see instances like this on a daily basis. My biggest feeling is this: GCC need to lead by example. If they don’t give a shit then why would businesses and residents? Living in a big city comes with certain problems at times but I refuse to accept unhygienic conditions as something that’s just part and parcel of it. by Spirited_Rub119 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 10:31am)
  • Don’t! What you do is great. The strength of feeling in these posts is encouraging at least. by Spirited_Rub119 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 11:54am)
  • Sorry to disappoint but the bins were absolutely overflowing - I also reported that to the council at the same time. I can send you a picture privately if you’d like to confirm my ‘motive’…no idea what that would be though other than being pissed off at the litter and lack of services 🤷🏻‍♀️ by Spirited_Rub119 (Wed 23rd Jun 2021 2:18pm)
  • There was also a vulnerable young girl missing thought to have travelled to Shawlands - thankfully now found - who the police were out looking for: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/heartbroken-scots-mum-hunts-answers-24434140.amp by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 3rd Jul 2021 7:56am)
  • Hey, I know exactly where you are on Gower St - you’ll be fine but just throwing it out there another option is to subway to shields road. Hope you get on OK! by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 11th Jul 2021 7:40am)
  • See Woo has been like this for a while now. The restaurant next to it shut down a while back too, pre Covid. I was beginning to wonder if they were set to close down and were selling stuff off. by Spirited_Rub119 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 5:45pm)
  • I don’t think it’s fair to assume that people who aren’t happy with the state of Glasgow haven’t been to a variety of major cities. In comparison to other similarly developed cities in the UK and Europe, which is really the benchmark for comparison to a city like Glasgow, Glasgow would 100% be down the bottom of the list in terms of litter, general filth, smell, and just generally looking and feeling incredibly run down by Spirited_Rub119 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 5:50pm)
  • It’s such a shame if that does turn out to be the case - we love See Woo and loved the restaurant too! We’d heard the restaurant shut down had been something to do with a hygiene fail with the inspectors (but have no evidence of that, just something a family friend told us!) either way, now that it’s shut down they might be taking the supermarket with it :( by Spirited_Rub119 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 7:49pm)
  • The other thing I thought was that a lot of folk would go to the shop after eating in the restaurant as they used to go fresh fish and frozen versions of the restaurant menu. They just don’t get that food traffic anymore. by Spirited_Rub119 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 10:29pm)
  • Same! People can’t believe that when I tell them but it’s just not part of the culture. by Spirited_Rub119 (Sun 19th Sep 2021 8:40am)
  • Was gonna say about the subway! Apparently no one in Glasgow does anything after 6pm on a Sunday. Compare to other big cities that have frequent, cheap, clean subway services running 24/7! by Spirited_Rub119 (Thu 21st Oct 2021 7:48am)
  • DELETED They’re striking because of poor pay and terrible working conditions. If you want to direct your anger at anyone direct it at the Council and don’t vote for the SNP. Also don’t flytip your kid’s dirty nappies. Maybe use washable ones and be kinder to the planet and your waste output in the process. Two kids under three is a choice you’ve made. by Spirited_Rub119 (Fri 5th Nov 2021 11:40pm)
  • 1. Every worker in Glasgow suffers under a discriminatory pay system. Refuse collectors and cleansing workers are low paid despite being key workers that are essential to the everyday running of Glasgow. In terms of bad conditions, refuse and cleansing workers have literally ended up in hospital because of their working conditions. Is that good enough for you? 2. Discriminatory pay grades are happening in GCC. SNP councillors and Susan Aitken have consistently gaslighted workers by claiming there’s not an issue and refusing to work with workers. 3. Literally just a fact. Didn’t necessarily mean it in a bad way. Oh and my point about using washable nappies still stands. Disposable nappies are disgusting and don’t help anything. by Spirited_Rub119 (Sat 6th Nov 2021 6:32pm)
