  • excellent! the parkhead forge gym looks great and seems quite affordable. glasgow club looks like a dream, particularly for the pool. do you have any duke street/alexandra parade shop recommendations? I really appreciate your advice! by espressopizzanino (Sun 14th Aug 2022 2:52am)
  • this is lovely, thank you so much! I'm excited to get to know the east end more; it seems like a tight community. I've read lots about tollcross as well and how many shops it has and it seems great. will absolutely check out china king. I had a few questions about cycling commutes; are there any good paths/routes west into the city? as well, i think the nearest library to where i'll be staying is the parkhead library. would you recommend it? by espressopizzanino (Sun 14th Aug 2022 2:51am)
  • I’m going to comment with a bit of a different flavor as an int’l person who sourced housing from abroad (yes, I am insane): - buy a UK phone number. seriously—the apps are cheap. I used freetone - make a spicy message that identifies some unique or sympatico traits that might mesh with the landlord. then, slightly vary it and mass message everyone on openrent, gumtree, and spareroom. - be open to living in a commuter town for a while (paisley, cumbernauld, even the reportedly unwalkable east kilbride) - look in the east end, as it seems the west end and south of the river clyde are particularly desirable (I suppose it’s the east end’s reputation?) - create a reverse ad - try and find the offline market when you get there, rather than relying on the platforms where everyone and their dog are scrambling to get a flat. best of luck to you; flathunting is a full-time job by espressopizzanino (Wed 31st Aug 2022 3:19am)
  • congratulations on getting an appointment! the GUM website appointment booking is absolutely shite. I had an IUD (ten year copper) inserted at Sandyford about one month ago, and I just finished my longest and crampiest period yet. It did hurt like hell, and I would absolutely recommend someone come with you, as you might not be able to take transit or drive or generally compose yourself. As others have mentioned, you are not allowed to bring anyone inside. my partner was a gem and brought paracetamol and ibuprofen (hot additional tip is buscopan—it works to essentially paralyze your muscles for IBS, and it made a huge difference for my uterine cramps). You may not feel the pan immediately, but by the time I reached central on the train, I was in pieces. Several people at the station (shout out to lovely Michelle) asked me if I was okay, including a Scotrail attendant. Don’t schedule anything else for the day. Rest and take painkillers—I have not and do not, but I needed to after the insertion. Don’t use a menstrual cup after for several cycles, as the suction is theorised to pull it out. Best of luck to you! I do not regret it at all. by espressopizzanino (Sun 18th Dec 2022 11:38pm)

  • Depends on what you want to do; it is costly and tricky to move to the UK outwith a connection through a parent (for British citizenship) or a grandparent born in the UK and a Commonwealth connection through your parent (Ancestry visa route). With the latter two, the difficulty is less so but the cost remains. You would need sponsorship through a SWV and that company would have to be graded A to have the security of the move. It also locks you into that position. You could also do a student visa if you are looking for more qualifications, but international fees are an absolute scam. I moved here to work and study, and I do not regret it. However, my partner is also from the UK, so I have a support network here through him and his family. As everyone else has stated, ten years of Tories has resulted in serious infrastructure issues everywhere you go: take your pick, and nothing is really running as it should. I would seriously consider your reasons and why you may want to live here, and what your plan is long term. Otherwise, it could be a nightmarishly expensive extended holiday (thanks to the Home Office). Best of luck to you. by espressopizzanino (Fri 31st Mar 2023 11:34am)

  • No, you don't need to pay. Phone 111 and ask about emergency dental treatment. Explain in detail the pain and how it is affecting you. You will likely to be connected to Martin, who is very kind and thorough and will triage your situation. You will potentially be offered a same day appointment (or at least my partner was when he had excruciating dental pain). My partner had a paediatric dentist at the dental hospital on Sauchiehall St named Rebecca from Norwich if I recall correctly who was an absolute gem. Professional, friendly and did a great job addressing his emergency dental situation (similar to yours). Good luck! by espressopizzanino (Thu 13th Jul 2023 11:11am)

  • I don't really have much to add in terms of practical guidance which others have provided. However, I did want to mention that night shifts can wreak havoc in bipolar disorder (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19922558/ for a case report) due to the circadian aspect of mood fluctuations in the illness. Not sure if it's a case of needing the extra bump night shifts give, but I would suggest for the future perhaps requesting a reasonable adjustment of not having night shifts? I know someone who had success with this and has a bipolar II diagnosis. There's also a bipolar support group (two, actually) in Glasgow: one in the city centre and one in the West End. I believe they meet twice monthly (once online, once in person). Wishing you all the best by espressopizzanino (Thu 17th Aug 2023 3:26pm)
  • :( I'll have a think. Do you have a union rep? They might be useful with this sort of issue, where if you can't work night shifts due to a health condition, there might be something to be done re rate of pay. Also, re ADP (new Scottish PIP), I believe there is a decent backlog of six months or so at the moment; though, the good news is that the payment is a lump sum backdated to when you applied. I know it's super tough re support groups; I still get the same antsy feeling before each meeting and just want to turn back every time. Sending hugs by espressopizzanino (Thu 17th Aug 2023 3:51pm)
  • Hmm, this might be a wild suggestion, but if fast food, I would guess you work for a large corporation? And if so, I am guessing they also have Occupational Health. You could theoretically ask for a conversation with Occupational Health about no night shifts as a reasonable adjustment, and if they decline, you could then consider taking this to the employment tribunal as constructive dismissal. Since not allowing you to work in a way that would not make you unwell (e.g. forcing night shifts when it makes you ill) could arguably count as a form of constructive dismissal. This is just my lay understanding. Again, that's just a thought. I hope things improve for you. And thank you for your kind words; things are alright for now. by espressopizzanino (Sun 20th Aug 2023 5:56pm)

  • Wasn't the case in the fine print when I purchased the pass. Feels a lot like drivers are simply doing it to exert authority. My student ID is also visible on the back of my phone. by espressopizzanino (Thu 5th Oct 2023 1:49pm)
  • Yeah, have been. I understand drivers are on the receiving end of a lot of abuse. No harsh words or anything, though being dressed down as if I were a private in the army and the driver were an officer is a bit much. by espressopizzanino (Thu 5th Oct 2023 1:50pm)
  • If you read what I wrote, I have no qualms with producing the ID, though this change has been recent. I have never previously been asked to show ID. It's about whether or not that First, a company that does not deliver a reliable service, has been cracking down on student bus passes through an internal memo, which may be linked to the shirty behavior of drivers by espressopizzanino (Thu 5th Oct 2023 1:55pm)
  • I don't particularly understand why the keep your head down and get in line crowd have framed this as an interpersonal issue when it is the structural problem of how First has coasted on a monopoly resulting in situations like these. Thanks for weighing in. I have paid for plenty of folks' bus tickets and have never mouthed off to a driver. But it's telling that many people are coming for me like I am entitled or ignorant. I have no issue presenting an ID when asked, it's the fact I am shouted at that is cause for dismay, because some people really don't need that in their lives. It's especially tough out there for a lot of people at the moment. by espressopizzanino (Thu 5th Oct 2023 2:16pm)
  • Thanks, and yes, I have had my card at the ready to show but some drivers do just wave it off and don't seem to be bothered when I do. Others get upset when I don't immediately have it at the ready. I didn't know people were so bothered though about the issue of presenting student ID to drivers by espressopizzanino (Thu 5th Oct 2023 2:19pm)
  • It's a pass on my app (digital). I do see your point; it's mostly the fact that some drivers treat me poorly for not immediately presenting my ID. • Ah, that's shite. I take the bus quite frequently and have seen some dodgy situations but have not come across an inspector. I have respect for and greet drivers, because I know from my uncle what it can be like and also know they're people, too. It's like another user said that there can be a lot of bad days working with the public. by espressopizzanino (Thu 5th Oct 2023 4:30pm)
  • No, I think you probably have a much better window into it than most. I wouldn't say it's bias at all. I have never slagged off a driver and always try to be kind bc I know it can't be easy. I hear McGills treat their drivers much much better by espressopizzanino (Thu 5th Oct 2023 4:40pm)

Have resided in a couple parts of the city and can give my 2p if that's helpful. Feel free to DM: I am happy to answer any questions you may have. • Hi! I will chime in from the NHS perspective as well: Psychiatric care is more linked together here, and NHS Scotland is not as pressured as NHS England in general. You might find that you spend longer with patients, and there is not as much rationing of beds. NHS GGC (Greater Glasgow and Clyde) has some amazing colleagues, and the number of hospitals we have is remarkable. Not sure what you're planning on subspecialising in, but there are great opportunities for work with older adults and addictions psychiatry. I am less familiar with some of the others (forensic, liaison, child and adolescent, etc.) Personally, if I were you, I would try and ask the opinions of colleagues in some of the MH trusts in Manchester (Greater Manchester MH trust and Pennine Care farther on in the east ). I have known people to come to Glasgow specifically to escape the situation in many English mental health trusts. I think you might find that doctors have better support here. I hope you have a brilliant time wherever you choose. I almost decided on living in the NW of England but settled on Glasgow in the end, so take my comments with a grain of salt. Good luck! by espressopizzanino (Mon 30th Oct 2023 7:02am)

  • Please don't take roaccutane! OP, have you tried looking at your diet? You might have a hormonal disorder (e.g., PCOS) which results in inflammation presenting as acne. I used to have severe acne but have worked on diet, exercise and that has helped tremendously. if you are a woman or trans woman, you could also look at spironolactone. Sometimes, birth control pills are also prescribed to regulate hormones. Tretinoin, a topical retinoid (of which roaccutane is a much stronger oral formulation), can be good but please moisturize adequately and use sunscreen by espressopizzanino (Sat 2nd Dec 2023 6:13pm)
