  • Thank-you I get it now! by hamstercereal (Sat 15th May 2021 11:39am)
  • ‘Travel is permitted in a level 3 area which is currently Scotland as a whole’ so now it’s fine to travel but from Monday when we’re level 3 and the rest of the country is level 2 we can’t. If that’s the case I think I’ve got it now, and don’t think I broke the rules. by hamstercereal (Sat 15th May 2021 11:38am)
  • I know, but I have a lot invested in the world opening up again by summer (i.e I need my university to approve my research plans) so despite feeling frustrated I will stick to the rules in the hopes that it will make things quicker overall. Third wave around august/September would be extremely bad news for me, I would have to just quit my PhD at that point. by hamstercereal (Sat 15th May 2021 12:41pm)
  • Thank-you, yes pandemic PGRs have been great, and I've managed to get a six month internship and then a three month extension to my funding. Doesn't make up for all the time lost but if I can leave for fieldwork Aug/Sep I think I can do it. Impact on mental health has been a bit wild though. Well done on getting your PhD! by hamstercereal (Sat 15th May 2021 1:04pm)
  • Tbh I can relate to that frustration, it’s certainly not been easy. I live in G42 though so I think I should be cautious. by hamstercereal (Sat 15th May 2021 2:50pm)
  • Yeah I can see what you mean. I ordered them straight away after going to the protest and have had two negatives since so hopefully dodged it. by hamstercereal (Sat 15th May 2021 3:05pm)

  • True, mines 25th. My husband rang yesterday to see if he could bring forward his second jab and they booked him in at the secc for today so it does seem a bit stupid. by hamstercereal (Mon 17th May 2021 12:12pm)

  • I often get the megabus and sleep the full 8 hours. I'm incredibly good a sleeping, and I'm really small so a chair is all I need. by hamstercereal (Tue 20th Jul 2021 9:04am)
  • but last year they said it was hybrid learning and then got everyone to move into halls and then just as term started said it was 100% online Are you saying that was PLANNED IN ADVANCED?! Surely not! Of course it was. by hamstercereal (Thu 12th Aug 2021 10:55am)
  • Yes same for Edinburgh- I’m a PhD student there but it was obvious to us and staff by hamstercereal (Thu 12th Aug 2021 7:35pm)

  • How is BLM an 'online trend' ? I haven't seen any movement in my lifetime galvanise more people worldwide to get out onto the streets. by hamstercereal (Mon 25th Oct 2021 11:05pm)
  • I mean a lot of companies and institutions responded and looked at their own policies so I would imagine there are smaller changes everywhere that we are probably unaware of. But dismantling racism is hardly an easy task. Especially with the backlash it gets. It makes me sad to see that here because as a white working-class person from the North-West of England, I fully understand that people feel beaten down by the system and don't want to hear about someone else's struggles *especially* when things that are immaterial get mentioned like racial 'representation'. But representation, language etc all of those things can be really important to class struggle. What's more the *most* important thing for class struggle is solidarity. We need an international working class movement. We have a big white working class population in the UK, but look worldwide and there is no doubt that class disparities follow racial lines, and tackling racism needs to be part of that movement. Of course any movement will get hijacked by middle/upper class people who are disconnected from the actual struggles - but that's not just in BLM that's in all our attempts at political change. George Orwell wrote in the 1930s that the left always fails because it gets taken over by middle class people who alienated the base support. Just because you're seeing that a lot with BLM, a lot of celebs and people who happen to be black but also super rich promoting that movement, doesn't mean it's a 'trend'. What is an online trend is pitting BLM against class movements as if they are somehow at odds. That's where everyone's attention is now unfortunately- but don't forget the thousands and thousands perhaps millions of black working class people who did what we have not done in decades and got out on to the streets and demanded change for their communities. That's worth something, change or no. by hamstercereal (Tue 26th Oct 2021 3:43pm)
