  • I’m moving this summer. I’m from Dumfries and my partner is Aberdeen. He lived in Glasgow for years and loves it. We head up to see pals pretty regular so I’m kinda just getting a feel for the place. Ideally I’d like to live smack bang city centre. But since we will be renting (canny afford hoose deposit) the prices are too dear. No idea what area to move too? Trying to find somewhere where I can have 2 bedrooms and maybe a balcony or outside space. Any ideas? What I love about Glasgow. The casino! Bloody love that place. Many a night I’ve spent frittering away my hard earned pennies. Oh and the night life! Amazing mixture of stuff. Edinburgh is pretty to look at but doesn’t have the honesty of Glasgow. The people are just real. You can be sitting with a druggie or a millionaire and they both treat you sound as a pound. I’m scared but excited to move all in one! by mcjimmyjam (Fri 8th Feb 2019 9:06pm)
  • I left school with 3 Highers at a C level in 2001. They were English, Drama and Art. At the time I wanted to be an actor but being young and immature I didn’t do anything about it. And to be fair didn’t realise I didn’t have the talent. Now I’m working with older adults in a more senior position, I knew I’d have to get a better education if I wanted to climb the ladder. Last year I went back to college and gained an A grade HNC in social services. It’s gave me the backing I need to get into uni. I’ve applied for this year and just waiting to hear back. If I don’t get in I’ve now got the grades for an HND and can go that route. I’d say unless you want to do something medical, engineering or science based go for the HNC route in your chosen field. It saves time getting highers (as the HNC gives more UCAS points I think) and do it that way. by mcjimmyjam (Wed 20th Feb 2019 2:01pm)
  • Do you have to pay council tax at all? I’m moving to Glasgow this year for uni? Would be handy to know Edit- moving with my partner who is not a student by mcjimmyjam (Sat 13th Apr 2019 2:21pm)
  • I’d advocate for the south side. Kings Park/ Shawlands etc. Shawlands has a lot going on, quite a few wee nice restaurants and pubs. Kings park has ok houses and is quiet. I moved here from south Scotland last year and found that the west end was well out my price range for renting. Finally settled on a 3 bed cottage flat in kings park. 580 per month with front and back garden. Eventually we would like our own property but right now the pennies don’t seem to be there. The train is not far away into town and takes around 15 minutes. A lovely green park 5 minutes away. Hardly any neds. I’ve got friends in some of the east end areas who say the tenement flats have huge rooms and the social aspect is great! So think it really just depends on your budget and what you want. I’d advise not to make EK a permanent fixture. It’s boring, drab and quite a bit of trouble in the less desirable areas by mcjimmyjam (Fri 8th May 2020 12:49pm)
  • Someone I know who lived in Springburn early 90’s, quite well off now said that they ended up buying a flat and the police rented it from them as a bit of a spy house. They had moved out of Glasgow by this point mind you. Mental. Sneaky fuckers by mcjimmyjam (Thu 13th Aug 2020 6:02pm)
  • Mental. I’ve just moved to Kings Park (mind you it’s the end nearer Castlemilk) and I think it’s nice and quiet. Heard a few stories and seen the police go wizzing by at times by mcjimmyjam (Thu 13th Aug 2020 6:00pm)
  • I say Queen of the South. No one bothers you then. And I actually do! by mcjimmyjam (Tue 29th Sep 2020 8:03pm)
  • You could try care for a job? There’s always posts going. It’s hard work, but if you’re kind and helpful you can be trained up. by mcjimmyjam (Tue 29th Sep 2020 8:06pm)
  • Go for it. I’ve worked with adults with dementia at a senior level for around 12 years. Lots of good companies out there. by mcjimmyjam (Tue 29th Sep 2020 10:42pm)

  • Just read this and I’m in tears. Such a lovely thing to fly him out to your wedding. Just very sorry it didn’t have the outcome you hoped for. Really, really sorry ☚ī¸â¤ī¸ by mcjimmyjam (Sat 14th Nov 2020 8:38am)
  • Aww brill guys. I was hoping it was something mental. However still cool by mcjimmyjam (Sat 14th Nov 2020 9:01am)
  • Hope St is usually full of bams. In the summer I was waiting for a bus and a guy came up to me and begged a couple of quid. The lady next to me gave a couple too. Then some dude on a bike, right in front of us just came up to the guy and went down his jook and produced a bag of vallies. We had just bought the guys drugs. He just said thanks lassies and away he went 😂 by mcjimmyjam (Tue 24th Nov 2020 6:55pm)
  • Felt sorry for him. Looked like he was getting a bit rattled. Thought it would be better than him mugging an old dear. Not right but that was my thinking by mcjimmyjam (Tue 24th Nov 2020 8:07pm)
  • Wasn’t surprised at all. Thought he’d go down the street though by mcjimmyjam (Tue 24th Nov 2020 8:06pm)
  • Down his trousers by mcjimmyjam (Wed 25th Nov 2020 2:39pm)
  • I agree but sometimes you just need to get through the day. You know what most of these people are going to spend the cash on. Lists of people don’t engage in services for many reasons but the ones that are ready to will. It must be absolutely awful having an addiction, homeless and needing to feed a habit. Most people don’t think twice about loaning or chipping in a tenner with pals to get recreational drugs of a weekend but somehow it’s a problem when it’s for guys on the street. We all have problems and I’m not one to judge. I think if they had a choice they’d all be back in their feet but without proper support systems and socioeconomic dynamics it can be very hard by mcjimmyjam (Wed 25th Nov 2020 2:45pm)
  • Yeah they don’t. We moved up here from a small town with big drug problems but it’s mostly contained and you don’t see folks sitting on the street. It really hit me hard. I just feel for them. by mcjimmyjam (Fri 27th Nov 2020 10:51am)
  • No, I’m kings park way and it’s terrible. Went for some shopping down shawlands and it was awful there too. by mcjimmyjam (Thu 3rd Dec 2020 3:02pm)
  • I like it by mcjimmyjam (Sun 30th Jan 2022 11:48pm)
  • Agree by mcjimmyjam (Sun 30th Jan 2022 11:47pm)
  • We’re kings park and get from clay oven tandoori, think they’re based in giffnock. Takes a wee while and is a bit dearer but the curries are banging, naan bread massive, order never wrong. Give them a try dude! by mcjimmyjam (Sun 30th Jan 2022 11:46pm)
  • Mostly the couch, sometimes I eat on my bed watching something on telly. I live in a cottage flat and the kitchen is fucking tiny. Ideally I’d like a wee table in the kitchen by mcjimmyjam (Sun 30th Jan 2022 11:52pm)
  • I used too before just eat but now it’s pre paid and rarely use cash. I feel guilty though cause you really should I think by mcjimmyjam (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 3:08pm)
  • If you’re Southside, try Stalks and Stems in Shawlands. They’ve usually got gorgeous fruits and some more ‘fancy’ types too by mcjimmyjam (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 3:06pm)
  • I moved here from Dumfries a few years ago, and o thought it was a shitehole there. But up here it seems the norm for even grown adults to just toss rubbish while walking. And to leave unwanted crap everywhere. The whole city is filthy. I live in one of the ‘nicer’ areas southside and I’ve seen folks just casually chucking cans and wrappers in my garden as they walk by. I’m not sure but it just seems like it’s ingrained by mcjimmyjam (Fri 22nd Jul 2022 3:11pm)
  • I do! by mcjimmyjam (Sat 30th Jul 2022 9:38pm)
  • Aww brilliant. I’ve lived in Glasgow for four years now and you can certainly get great takeout but I just haven’t found a decent kebab anywhere. No one seems to do the pickled red cabbage either. I mean that’s a staple on a kebab! It’s a wee bit out the way for me but I might drive after work and do a detour. by mcjimmyjam (Fri 1st Dec 2023 11:49pm)
  • Yeah, it’s not really the red sauce stuff I’m looking for. Thanks though by mcjimmyjam (Fri 1st Dec 2023 11:45pm)
  • Where abouts is Orchard Street? I’m Southside, anywhere near? by mcjimmyjam (Fri 1st Dec 2023 11:51pm)
  • Haha! Imagine getting downvoted for saying you’re no a fan of parsley. Strange. Anyways, Istanbul sounds like a shout and I don’t mind a wee wait. by mcjimmyjam (Fri 1st Dec 2023 11:50pm)
  • Aye, the price of kebabs is unreal these days. Recently paid £7 for a donner. The pitta wasn’t even cut, some onion, lettuce and tomato for salad, no cabbage or anything. Measly portion of meat and the awful tub of runny sauce. To me it’s not a kebab if it’s all separate by mcjimmyjam (Fri 1st Dec 2023 11:55pm)
  • Why is it that mentioning the colour of skin of the youths who are hanging around is racist? That area does have young black guys hanging about causing trouble. Are we not allowed to mention this anymore? I get that saying it’s like a ghetto is skirting the lines, but I think you have to be able to describe people. by mcjimmyjam (Sat 2nd Dec 2023 12:52am)
  • Can confirm. I’ve seen this a few times myself by mcjimmyjam (Sat 2nd Dec 2023 12:56am)
