Interests:

  • Just moved to Glasgow and trying to get myself out there but making friends feels daunting! Anyone want to take a chance on hanging out with a 29 non-binary nerdy type? I have a ton of interests so happy to go for a pint, check out an art gallery or movie, or do something outdoors. Big into board games too! by spiritjam (Mon 19th Sep 2022 6:33pm)
  • Hi! I just found your post while searching for NaNoWriMo writing buddies in Glasgow. I'd love to make some writing friends, even just hanging out a few hours a week in companionable silence to write with! If you want to hang out I'd be happy to meet up. :) (Can be earlier than November too - I need to start planning for NaNo soon or I won't get anything done haha!) by spiritjam (Mon 19th Sep 2022 9:38pm)
  • Their Instagram hasn't been updated in a while - do you know if it's tonight they're meeting or next week (as it says alternate Tuesdays)? Very interested in finding a writing group! by spiritjam (Tue 20th Sep 2022 10:16am)
  • Amazing! Thank you. I'll try my best to make it. by spiritjam (Tue 20th Sep 2022 10:59am)
  • Thank you for this! Once these meetings are in-person again I'd like to come along I think. :) by spiritjam (Tue 20th Sep 2022 2:42pm)
  • At Milk cafe? I'm going too! It's pretty close to where I live. I've not really got anything to share either, just want to see what the vibe is and maybe write something while I'm there! :D by spiritjam (Tue 20th Sep 2022 3:43pm)
  • Such a shame because it would be so useful! I'd be willing to set something up if I could find a community space. In fact I think I will ask my local library tomorrow - I guess there's nothing to stop people getting together at a public space and co-working. (If anyone reading this has leads on other places that might be suitable please let me know!) by spiritjam (Wed 21st Sep 2022 11:12pm)
  • Thank you, I'll keep an eye on the Pittman's courses. In-person is really preferable for me. I have depression and struggle with focus and that's where I've fallen short on my last few attempts at learning to code - it's all been very much me staring at a screen or talking to people online and not always able to articulate what I'm struggling with, or feeling motivated to keep going in a vaccuum during a low period. I think an in-person community would do a lot to help me learn better. I won't say no to more online resources though! by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 9:58am)
  • Thank you for the info! by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 9:56am)
  • That would be great! My plan was to ask my local library (Pollockshaws) if they'd accommodate a co-working space for one or two evenings a week. I don't think it would take much to set up or run - people bring their laptops, work on their projects, ask each other for help if they get stuck. Could also do more structured classes if people are starting from scratch depending on how you'd want to approach things l, but yeah that's where I'm at in my thought process so far. 😅 by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 10:04am)
  • This looks good, thank you! by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 10:01am)
  • I've put an in application here, thank you! :) by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 10:01am)
  • Sweet, thank you I will definitely keep an eye out! Aye this stuff is EXPENSIVE. I'm using as many free/cheap resources as I can but ultimately an in-person community would be invaluable if I could scrape one together. Yeah, I want a better life for myself basically - better job prospects, flexibility to work remote/online and more opportunity for growth while learning a valuable and relevant skill. Good luck to you on your journey :D by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 10:50am)
  • It's tough to find that balance! And also why I want to self-teach as much as I can before even attempting a boot camp (which I'm saving up for). I don't want to be totally dependent on a teacher but that in-person support would be a useful fallback. Thank you for the heads up on CPD, I will dive into the depths of Google :D by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 11:20am)
  • Looks like they're done accepting applicants for this cohort but I've sent them a hopeful email anyway! If not this time around I will definitely keep an eye on them next time applications open. Thank you for this! by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 1:15pm)
  • Oh heck!! That's an interesting read for sure. Always so difficult to know for sure what's true and it's a lot to sink money into! by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 1:42pm)
  • Huge thanks for this. I've got that tab pinned and will pick something free and get started. It definitely all feels overwhelming but I've got to hope this is the way into a better job! by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 1:41pm)
  • I haven't seen anything recent in Glasgow at all! Unfortunately I don't drive and currently have some mobility issues so I'd like to keep it local. That said, I've reached out to my local library about hosting a space so we'll see if I can be the change I need! Thank you for the support. :) by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 2:34pm)
  • Any tips on where to find one? by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 3:58pm)
  • Thank you! I'll have a think and reach out. (If any coders in Glasgow are reading this and want to mentor me... Pls :D haha) by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 4:17pm)
  • Thanks very much. I deleted LinkedIn ages ago but I'll start it up again with a view to keeping an eye out for mentors too. Going to check out the link you've shared as well! Massively appreciate all the help in this thread. by spiritjam (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 6:52pm)
  • Oh, do you know how I'd access that? by spiritjam (Fri 23rd Sep 2022 11:24am)
  • The point is to form an in-person community because sometimes it's far easier to turn to the person next to you and show them something on a screen and have an instant answer than it is to try and explain something through a video screen. It's as much about the networking, community and co-working aspect as anything else, and the idea of showing up somewhere every week with that added accountability that not showing up to a zoom call doesn't have. I'll keep working on setting up an in-person space. :) Thanks though! by spiritjam (Fri 23rd Sep 2022 11:53am)
