  • If it's a season ticket, you need to tap it once a week at your start and end point I think. I stayed at a relative's house for a week at a different station (but on the same route, and my ticket was valid from there), and after a week or so it gave an error message at Central, and I was told to tap it at my home station and that rectified it. by wowwot (Thu 5th Sep 2019 9:00pm)

  • It makes sense that the smaller supermarkets will be better stocked, as they will rely on more frequent restock deliveries as a matter of course. AFAIK the supply chains aren't affected, so it's not stuff being sold out permanently, just until it gets back into balance by wowwot (Sun 15th Mar 2020 10:21am)

  • Yeah I'm waiting on a delivery (I usually get an asda or Morrisons delivery - I'm not used to them being so popular!), but it's not for a week yet. I'm a bit scared of going to the supermarket (not because of the virus, but of people being mean/angry), but it's looking more organised now. Hopefully I don't need to go but I'm more reassured now. • I think there are some - theres one in pollokshields, I would think there will be others. I learned of the pollokshields one through the pollokshields community council - your local community council might know if there's one in your area by wowwot (Mon 22nd Jun 2020 9:08pm)
  • I went to a women's self defence class. They recommended carrying a mini spray deodorant in your bag which you can spray in someone's eyes and run. They didn't recommend perfume, as generally you cant tell from touch which way the spray comes out, but you can feel the nozzle on deodorant by wowwot (Fri 26th Jun 2020 12:19pm)
  • I've seen some posters around about how to deal with witnessing racist shite like this. It's great you got involved - I think the people who came up to you afterwards are now more likely to get involved themselves. I've read a good strategy is to talk directly to the person getting the shite directed at them - ask if they're okay, that sort of thing. Block out the fucker being an arsehole. by wowwot (Wed 1st Jul 2020 9:53am)
  • There must be folk/wee businesses who operate a bulk waste uplift? Like just operate their own van and take to the dump, for a small per item fee? They could also recycle/repurpose stuff etc... There are plenty people who don't have a car or don't drive in Glasgow, it's a service I'd use! by wowwot (Fri 3rd Jul 2020 9:46am)
  • For specialist support, you do need to be referred by a GP as I understand it. I've paid out of pocket for a regular talking style therapist - it was about 25/30 a session, and I went monthly as I could afford that. I lucked out and clicked with the first person I saw, and ended up seeing her for quite a few years. If you're based in the Southside, there is [http://wellbeing-glasgow.org.uk/](http://wellbeing-glasgow.org.uk/) it might be worth giving them a ring? I'd signed up yesterday to some online group counselling things, but they got back in touch with me because I am currently on an NHS waiting list, which is a step above these services, so I can't get them, but they'll know what support is available? by wowwot (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 2:58pm)
  • I searched a database of Glasgow-based counsellors, which had information on their specialisms. (might have been this? https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/counselling/sct/glasgow) As I (particularly at the time) was struggling with expressing/repressing emotions, I was drawn to someone who used an emotion based approach. Getting the right match, that's a lot of trial and error... it took me a long time to actually be honest, but the work I did on that helped when I did the individual CBT sessions later (with a different counsellor, things like bringing up whenever I felt like I was being judged, even if I knew I wasn't). I've found a lot of counsellors pages will detail their specific areas of expertise, which might be their approach, or the situations that they can support. I kind of went into it wanting solutions to issues I faced, but the most useful thing I am learning to do is to notice when I think certain things, feel certain things, that may not be grounded in reality. It can feel trite when folk congratulate you when you tackle mental health things, but it really is great to aim to address things. If I compare my life now to when I started that counselling stretch (maybe 6 years in all), I still face the same issues, but I definitely feel better about it. by wowwot (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 3:34pm)

  • This was years ago, but I was in a flat that was managed by a friend of the landlord (landlord was abroad, friend managed other properties). The friend had too much on and couldn't manage the landlords properties anymore, and the management went to [hap lettings](https://www.haplettings.co.uk/) I found them to be the best agency I've encountered in Glasgow. I'm not with them now because they pretty much only manage expensive properties, but if money was no object I probably would! As a disclaimer, this was back in 2016 and I am comparing them to the landlord/friend who were a bit useless, so they seemed magical in comparison haha. by wowwot (Wed 10th Mar 2021 6:04am)

  • I think it's a great idea, it's nice to see spaces used rather than be vacant! A lot of folk are working in this area - there are a lot of people who can help! I'd consider attending your local community council if meetings start up again - there might be folk working on a similar thing that you could join, or they can support applications. Good luck! • Be careful with this tactic! I had a similar bass issue, assumed it was my downstairs neighbour and did my best to avoid it with ear plugs or whatever. However he assumed the noise was me, and took to kicking my door. Bass travels different so it can be hard to know the source. I was silent in my flat but that guy was convinced it was me (and that I lived with a man and was covering for him) I guess my bass problem got sorted as I moved the fuck out. Thanks, shitty neighbour!! by wowwot (Fri 16th Apr 2021 8:35am)

  • I think it's a general rule that the larger/richer charities are less effective per pound than smaller charities. I worked for a small Glasgow based charity for 3 years - its primary focus wasn't mental health as such, but a core strand was volunteering, which helped a lot of folk with different mental health issues. I share your dislike/distrust of blanket statements, like "I don't know who needs to hear this today, but you are loved". I've had some people be very bad to me in my life. Do these blanket statements apply to them, too? I'm actually one of the lucky turds who's actually been able to get proper support via the NHS. I was pursuing an ADHD diagnosis myself, was referred to psychiatry and had an appointment within weeks. They didn't think I had ADHD, but were like "well, there's something up with you" and I was referred to counselling. It took maybe a year to get my first appointment, and I'm lucky that it really really helped. I'm older than you (37, was 36 when I started NHS counselling), so I understand the frustration that a lack of mental health support causes, the anger, the grief for what could have been. I'm one of the ones whose been depressed since early childhood, no before and after. I'm in a good place now. My life isn't sorted, but I'm less angry at myself, less judgemental of the times where I seek comfort in food or buying shit. That took work tho, and I had to get there myself. A sentence from another person isn't going to unlock you. I share my experience with friends, but it's just that - mine. It's not universal, it's not unique. Ugh I should wrap this up as I don't think I'm answering your question really! There has been one online resource I've found very helpful (with the guidance of my counsellor) is actually an Australian mental health resource with many workbooks. In one on depression, it suggested setting goals like "get out of bed for ten minutes". These were the first realistic goals I'd seen. I dislike when it's "go for a walk! Cook a meal you like!" Because my experience of when the depression is thickest, I can't do that, and that advice made me feel like a failure because I couldn't do it. by wowwot (Thu 27th Jan 2022 8:30am)

  • Yeah 1982, Janine was the only Alasdair gray book I managed and it helped me write the only good exam essay I ever did - positing that an issue with contemporary Scottish identity is hypermasculinity, evidenced by characters like begbie, which left no place for non hypermasculine men (like in 1982, Janine) or women (Janice Galloway trick is to keep breathing) by wowwot (Thu 5th May 2022 8:11pm)

  • I second community classes. I've done some evening classes at cardonald, it's a low stress way to dip your toes in the meeting new people river. I think it's less pressure than meet ups, as the reason for you being there is to learn a skill, it's a go to conversation topic, it's routine socialisation. by wowwot (Fri 3rd Jun 2022 6:06am)
